A Guide To Modern Jazz In 10 Albums

I've been listening to a lot of jazz lately, so I figured I'd make a quick list of albums released from 2011 and onward that represent the base of contemporary jazz. I tried to cover as many different types of jazz as possible without falling into the pattern of listing 50+ generic albums. All of these are available to stream at places like Spotify and Bandcamp, and I will provide links when I can.
10Aaron Parks Trio
Alive In Japan

A phone recording, but that makes this a very, very interesting listen. Bandcamp (free download): http://aaronparks.bandcamp.com/album/alive-in-japan
9The Bad Plus
Made Possible

One of my personal favorite jazz fusion groups. They've covered some of the best rock songs of all time. For example, "Tom Sawyer": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0gGR-lbiFQk
8Theo Bleckmann
Hello Earth!: The Music of Kate Bush

This one is for all the Kate Bush fans. "Running Up That Hill:" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b8OYIBX3HOE
7Ravi Coltrane
Spirit Fiction

John's son. Need I say more? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xZaFp4b-fEs
6Kyle Eastwood
The View From Here

Clint's son. Need I say more The Sequel? "Metropolitain" from the album of the same name: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DWJ_Lsf1cgw
5King Tears Bat Trip
King Tears Bat Trip

These guys do a little bit of everything. They play an experimental, avant-garde cocktail of free jazz, jazz fusion, Latin Jazz, and psychedelic music. Very highly recommended. Bandcamp: http://kingtearsbattrip.bandcamp.com/album/king-tears-bat-trip
4Matthew Shipp
Greatest Hits

Matthew Shipp is one of my favorite American free jazz pianists. This album if from this year and is actually an LP with a very tongue-in-cheek title. "Cohesion" from the album Equilibrium: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=B1rzyXT8H2M
3Jacob Karlzon 3
More

Jacob Karlzon is a jazz pianist from Sweden. His trio plays a minimalistic type of smooth jazz with elements of classic jazz. His cover of "Maniac": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9ZscjEx1Qg
2Badbadnotgood
BBNG2

I'm sure many of you are familiar with this group already. Their first album is typical smooth jazz/jazz-hop, whereas this one is more jazz fusion/jazz-hop-influenced. Also very highly recommended. Bandcamp: http://badbadnotgood.bandcamp.com/
1Preparation X
Scenes

My favorite jazz album of the last five years. Preparation X play a type of experimental, avant-garde jazz that combines elements of techno and ambient noise as well as other subtleties. Scenes is a very relaxing listen with quite a few tricks up its sleeve. Highly recommended.
