Controversial/Failed Member Changes in Rock/Metal Bands

Member changes are never easy for a band - but sometimes, they go extra-wrong. These are some of those times.
1Accept
Eat the Heat

Until recently, the band's only album without iconic pint-sized frontman Udo Dirkschneider, whose gravelly voice was sorely missed. In his place, leading the Krauts' poorly-received attempt at penetrating the glam-obsessed US market, is the much more mundane-sounding David Reece, who would not be long for the band thereafter, as Udo soon patched things up with the rest of the band and reclaimed his rightful place.
2Black Sabbath
Born Again

Ian Gillan still stands as the only one-and-done vocalist in Black Sabbath's vast discography, qualifying him for this list.
3Iron Maiden
The X Factor

Poor Blaze Bayley. Not a bad person, or even a bad singer, he was simply not Bruce Dickinson (in fact, his register was closer to the raspier grit of original Maiden frontman Paul Di'Anno), causing fans to shun him on principle. The fact that he lasted two albums before conceding to Maiden's rightful frontman is nothing short of a feat.
4Judas Priest
Jugulator

See above example - except this time, things were made worse by the band's baffling decision to modernize their sound, a change literally no fan of theirs had wanted. Fortunately for Owens, he went on to have a much more noteworthy career than Blaze, and still got to live out his Cinderella story even despite this early mishap. Plus, he got a really decent film based off his time in Priest, with his expy being played by 'Marky' Mark Wahlberg, with a singing voice from Steelheart's Matias Matijevic, so...win-win.
5Motley Crue
Motley Crue

See above example. While not a bad singer, Corabi was definitely not Vince Neil, and his raspier, grungier style really did not fit in with the band's sound .Crue's attempts to compensate for this by modernizing their sound only made things worse, and Corabi's two-album run continues to be seen as the blight in the Saints of LA's otherwise strong discography.
6Poison
Native Tongue

Richie Kotzen's style REALLY does not mesh with the band's usual style, resulting in an album that is far too long-winded, noodly and chorusless for its own good.
7The Clash
Cut the Crap

Half of the original members gone + style change = a very aptly-titled album. No wonder the band did not survive this debacle.
8The Doors
Full Circle

Not a change per se, but it was neve going to work without Jim...
9Van Halen
Van Halen III

The ur-example. Extreme's Gary Cherone was the wrong man, in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and his name will forever be associated with one of the most notorious mis-steps, biggest commercial flops and universally reviled albums in classic rock's long and eventful history.
