A Song Of Ice And Fire Ranked
1A Clash Of Kings

This is where shit seriously goes down. The first book does an excellent job of setting up the propeller and the excrement, and when the two collide on CoK, it's glorious. Return Of The King should take notes - THIS is how you write battles and make them interesting. Having possibly the most sudden, unexpected and gasp-omg twist in any book ever doesn't hurt, either.
2A Dance With Dragons

A Storm Of Swords would have gotten this spot if its first half wasn't so relentlessly dull. DwD may lack a bit in its titular mystical creatures, and give prominence to a few less interesting characters, but it keeps things reasonably interesting and piques the reader's interest for at least two upcoming character arcs. Finishing this book leaves the reader with a feeling of wanting to know what happens NOW, not when Martin can be arsed to write the next book. And that is a sign that its mission was accomplished.
3A Game Of Thrones

The perfect intro point into the series. It gets the reader to care for the characters, rounds them out, establishes loyalties and relationships, and honest-to-God Uncle Ben's two of its main characters, setting the whole plot in motion. It also eases readers into George Martin tropes such as 'point of view characters die for real', 'expect the unexpected' and 'Tyrion is awesome'.
4A Storm Of Swords

A second half that rivals CoK for best part of the series is offset by a mind-numbingly dull first half of people sitting around talking. By the time shit starts happening, it's awesome shit, but its effects are dampened by how bored the reader is by that point.
5A Feast For Crows

'Hey reader! Remember how the first half of Storm Of Swords was so awesome and interesting, with all its people sitting around talking about doing shit, and not doing anything at all? Yeah, that was great, wasn't it? Why don't I give you a FULL BOOK of that? What? You don't like it? Tough tits, cowboy. I've got you hooked by now, with my awesome plot twists and characters, and if you don't read this one, you won't get what happens on the next (awesome) one at all! So I'm just gonna write 'medieval Catcher In The Rye', and you're just gonna have to read it, because SAGA! HA-HA! Trololol'
