Top 10 albums 2022

These are the albums I consider the best for 2022. I'll try to do one of those lists every year, and I might start writing complete reviews someday. I started collecting vinyls in 2022, and I listen/rate around 2–3 albums per week since then, not sticking to any specific style. Consider English isn't my first language, so there might be some mistakes here and there.
10City of Caterpillar
Mystic Sisters

I know this band has achieved the mythic status around here, but never heard of them before this album, which is their return after 20 years of inactivity. There is something magical about this album which is hard to describe, I could not name a band that has this kind of sound.
9The Callous Daoboys
Celebrity Therapist

Being a long time fan of Dillinger Escape Plan, I instantly recognised the style from the first chorus of the album. At first, I was expecting a DEP clone, but I quickly started to see Callous's style thrown into the mix. This record has a lot of energy thrown at you, and you must be prepared to receive it, because it might feel overwhelming at first. This is a must for anybody that misses Dillinger Escape Plan and want something refreshing.
8White Ward
False Light

I started listening to White Ward at the beginning of the year when I got it in a vinyl lot, not knowing what it was. Doing some research, I found out they were a Ukrainian group, so with everything happening these days, it caught my interest. I first listened to their first album, and the mix of Black Metal and Jazz was really original, but sometimes a bit forced in my opinion. On this one, the blend is a lot smoother, even though it's not as jazzy as the previous albums. The trade-off is a good one, it feels more polished than their previous efforts.
7Big Thief
Dragon New Warm Mountain I Believe in You

From the first notes, you can clearly hear the vibe they are going with. Really good folk, with some hints of other styles like country (which is surprising, because country is the only style I have a hard time getting into, except old classics). This is a really long album, which is different from the general tendencies these days. Adrianne Lenker's voice is really soothing, and the compositions of the songs are really original, every song has its own spirit, but everything still flows smoothly.
6An Abstract Illusion
Woe

This is plain old progressive death metal, but executed perfectly. As a person that got introduced to metal with Opeth in the early 00', I always craved bands that have compositions similar to their old stuff, good contrast between heavy and clean vocals. This one has it all, and does not feel generic at all.
5Rolo Tomassi
Where Myth Becomes Memory

I never was big on harsh vocals from women singers in metal bands to say the truth. Many bands changed my mind this year, and this one is probably the best. Rolo Tomassi and Brutus have been spinning a lot on my table this year.
4Fontaines D.C.
Skinty Fia

Post-punk at its finest. In the last couple of years, this sub-genre has been exploding with multiple new bands coming from everywhere, but the singer's accent from Fontaines D.C. seems to give it a different tone. The intro song hooked me on first listen, and it did not stop from there.
3Everything Everything
Raw Data Feel

Everything Everything are something special. The voice of the singer is one of a kind, and I understand some people can't get into them because of that. I thought these guys had peaked a couple years ago, but this album proved me wrong. In my opinion, Leviathan is the best song they ever wrote.
2Danger Mouse and Black Thought
Cheat Codes

This is by far the album I've listened to most this year (might be because the vinyl came with a CD for the car...). There are so many good feats on this album (MF DOOM, Joey Bada$$, Run The Jewels, etc.) and the album is a really consistent listen. This is not a complex record, the beats are really simple, and even though the song structures are quite simple, everything flows together perfectly and I don't seem to get bored of it. The production from Danger Mouse is what you'd expect, great samples and good focus on the singer's voices. Black thought was new for me since The Roots, and it fits perfectly.
1Kardashev
Liminal Rite

This album really took me by surprise, my top 10 was pretty much cemented but Kardashev shuffled the cards. I did not know anything about these guys, but ordered this one near the end of the year, seeing it was popping a lot in the best albums of the year lists from multiple websites. The good melodies, the different kind of clean vocals/growls and the emotions the music carries makes this one my only 5/5 of the year. There is a really epic feeling to this album, and not the typical forced ones, some well deserved epic moments.
