Everything Is Fire

April 1st

Starting this challenge off very strong with an apocalyptic, cataclysmic heavy record. A band I have heard much discourse about but have not checked out for myself prior. This record is non-stop with a few necessary breaks in the madness. The riffs are insane, the pacing is awesome, everything flows wonderfully. A fantastic first record for April. Very much looking forward to hearing more from these guys.

The consistency of this record is what impressed me the most, having massive singles like Semi-Charmed Life and managing to keep that energy and song writing quality up for an hour and 14 tracks is very sick. I was pleasantly surprised by this in all honesty. The basslines are super sick, the songwriting is bouncy, fun, energetic. Actually, a fantastic late 90's alt rock record.

Laughing Stock

April 3rd

Rec'd By: ryus

I've only heard a couple early 80's Talk Talk songs, so I was not ready for this jazzy/post-rock side of the band. It's quite mesmerizing, the atmosphere, the flow of the tracks, the simplicity of the compositions, it works very well and offers something very unique. After the Flood is probably my favorite track here but each of these tracks feels vital. Awesome suggestion, great record!

This one, I feel, will probably take multiple listens to truly appreciate. It's got a sort of americana twang to it which I enjoy plus some bluesy guitars, some very experimental song structures, very dense lyricism. It's got a lot of elements that I enjoy in music, but it didn't come together like I expected it to, hence the need for more listens. This still is very good and highly enjoyable.

April 5th

Rec'd by: Pangea

I mean yeah, this record is legendary, the songs are legendary. Its a fundamental record and the fact that it took me this long to check it out should be considered a crime. I listened to this three times in a row and it kept getting better. Just the definition of a classic album.

This record fucking rocked! I heard their most recent record and thats been my only experience before and I quite enjoyed it but this is another level. The songs are so much fun, the guitar and bass riffs are infectious, the vocals are great. I can see why this album regarded so highly!

8The Mothers of Invention
We're Only in It for the Money

April 7th

Rec'd by: Arsmorendi

I am a big fan of Zappa and currently have been diving into a lot of his stuff as well as some Mothers albums but I hasnt heard this one yet. Its just as zany and quirky and what I've come to expect from these talented fellas. The production on this is quite ahead of its time as well. Really enjoyed this!

This is a band that I had not heard of before this and now im pretty stoked to check more out. It took a few tracks for me to really get into this but man, this band is sick! The guitar work is mind bending, the riffs are awesome, its all very unique and diverse.

This was something entirely new to me as well and I wasn't sure what to expect. I listened through this twice and I was pretty entranced for a majority of the runtime, most of the songs are just super well designed and executed with maybe a few just being a bit overlong. I know I have another one of their records requested at a later date this month for this challenge so I'm looking forward to hearing more.

April 10th

Rec'd by: bighubbabuddha

This one definitely needed a couple listens to understand why I what so renowned. The production choices on this are very interesting, the vocals remind me so much of REM that it was a distraction at times. I felt like the back half of the album was stronger and the songs felt more developed and complete to me. I did enjoy this but just not as much as some of the other things I've listened to this month.

12Cult of Luna
Salvation

April 11th

Rec'd by: Demon of the Fall

I don't think my opinion on this one will go over well but I found this to be...okay. I've listened to other Cult of Luna stuff before and I always kind of come away exhausted. It's a lot to absorb, it's very dense, lots of atmosphere. I think it's just a bit bloated for my taste, it's a bit too focused on it's atmosphere. Of course that's just my opinion and I can see why this is so regarded and loved.

I listened to both the spotify version and the lengthier "vinyl" edition on youtube and there's certainly a reason why it was suggested to listen to the longer version. So much more intense, better flow, just a better experience all around. A fantastic record through and through, having heard only one of their most recent projects and not enjoying it very much, this kind of cleaned the palette and I'm looking forward to hearing more.

April 13th

I'm hoping this was a joke suggestion because this ain't it. If there was an award for strangest nonsensical vocals in music, this first track should take the cake. It's almost unbearable in many ways but I did get through about 12 minutes of it before admitting defeat. I hope that counts for something.

The gradual build and decline of this record is enchanting, the simplicity of it's composition creates a heavier focus on that build and the atmosphere surrounding it. The sparse vocals work very well, lots of layers of sound; just a lovely record to get lost in and one of my favorites I've heard so far this month.

Goddamnit

April 15th

Rec'd by: Drifter

I preferred this album to their latest output, feels very youthful and brash. Tons of energy, sonically very tight. Some of the vocals irk me, mostly on the slower ballad-like tracks where the melodies are more present. But otherwise, a very solid punk record.

April 16th

Rec'd by: Dtype

A massive record, seismic in its heaviness and intensity. I was really impressed with the way each track flowed, each section really heightening the experience. While it is long, it really didn't feel like it; I just kind of vibed out to it and enjoyed the steady progression. One of the most rewarding listens I've had so far!

Smash

April 17th

Rec'd by: mryrtmrnfoxxxy

This band has always been hit or miss for me, their recent albums are pretty meh, I liked Americana and Conspiracy of One, surprisingly have never heard Smash in full outside of the popular songs. Overall, it was probably their most consistently solid record. It's a bit immature, a bit youthful but that adds to the charm. I really liked the guitar tones, that was one of the first things I really homed in on with the first few tracks. It's a great classic punk album.

And here we have it, the first five ive given to an album during this challenge. This thing is incredible; its diversity of sound, the musical technicality, the unique flow of all the somgs, every aspect feels calculated and intriguing. Something I will return to often and I cant wait to hear there other works.

April 19th

Rec'd by: Zakalwe

This record really defines an era of hip hop; extremely poignant and honest, love the old-school beats and rhythms. Excellent flows and the interludes actually add storytelling and attitude to the overall drama of the tracklist. Easily one of the best hip hop records I've heard.

Alright, here's my take. I like aspects of this, I don't think I really like this record all that much though. It's not really my preferred style of indie music, the lo-fi aspects are just kind of frustrating to me and the whole "raw" sound where the takes aren't always the best, the vocals aren't always in key, it doesn't jive with me. That being said, there are tracks that I like but my overall take away isn't all that great. I'll listen to other albums by them because I'm a curious fella.

April 21st

Rec'd by: Anode

This is more up my alley; noisy, unsettling, sonically terrifying. It's such a horrific masterpiece in many ways from the brutality of the vocals to the technicality of the drums and my lord, the guitars might as well have been replaced by chainsaws. It commands you attention, the storyline is disturbing nightmare fuel but that is the kind of music that really scratches an itch for me.

April 22nd

Rec'd by: Nikkolae

Blackgaze is something that I'm a fan of and this is a great example of it done right. It takes a moment for your ears to adjust to the production style of this music but the atmosphere and sonic experience are next to unmatched. There're a couple tracks that meander a bit here but overall, I really enjoyed this and look forward to hearing more of their stuff.

April 23rd

Rec'd by: Hawks

Truth be told, I've never been a big fan of Doom stuff unless there's just some elements sprinkled in to certain songs here and there but I did enjoy this. The pacing is slow as expected, the vocals threw me for a loop when they began because it felt very opposite to any other doom vocalist I've heard in the past but it works really well; extremely poignant and honestly my favorite thing about this record. This isn't something I would revisit much but I can appreciate it.

The Perfect Element, Part 1

April 24th

Rec'd by: Zakusz

I must just be uncultured because I was not able to really get into this like I thought I would. Prog is just something that I love and I figured this revered band would just slide into my life in a positive way but I just really didn't connect to many of the tracks. I also might just not be a big fan of a vocals or at least the vocal choices that were made when it came to melodies. Certainly not a bad album, just not my favorite unfortunately.

April 25th

Rec'd by: Futures

Easy to understand why this is such a popular record, lots of moody post-punk vibes with solid melodies and great instrumentation. The songs flow beautifully, each track feels vital and that's something that I'm always looking for in a record. It doesn't overstay its welcome either which is nice and I can myself enjoying this regularly.

April 26th

Rec'd by: AsleepintheBack

Surprise! I actually really enjoyed this! The mix of various styles and genres and influences plus a clear vulnerability in the lyricism and the performances is very endearing even with some of those lo-fi production qualms that I have. The flow of the record is brilliant and while the vocals can get a bit grating, especially with some of those longer held out notes, I found most of the vocal inflections that be very emotionally heavy and sort of addicting. II can actually see this growing more and more on me with repeated listens.
