| Introduction to improv trio’s
Been writing some new music for an experimental trio and found myself revisiting some old favorites from jazz to free playing. Figured I would drop a few that I think would be a solid/diverse introduction if anyone would be curious to check them out! I know it’s kind of a niche space around here, but anyone got any favorites/recs? | 1 | | Bill Evans You Must Believe In Spring
Jazz - Easy to discount as background/novelty-mood music (especially once the MASH theme comes up on the track listing), but this is a subtle and playful record that rewards any mode of listening. | 2 | | Paul Bley, Evan Parker & Barre Phillips Sankt Gerold
Free playing - Probably the most diverse of the three here; a wide spectrum of resonance based saxophone explorations, deeply physical bass playing, and almost leisurely piano meditations wrapped up and splintered apart over and over and over…an exhausting and ear opening recording. | 3 | | Keith Jarrett Inside Out
Jazz and Free playing - Almost Charlie Brown…almost German Baroque…almost Baptist Church? Sure, that sounds about right. It’s fun. | |

Some really tight playing here - only heard the 4 tracks on bandcamp so far, but i'll definitely be following his label and buying this record soon. Cool energy! | GhandhiLion

08.26.21 | As far as best albums of the past decade...Sorey's "Pillars" and Michael Pisaro's "Nature Denatured and Found Again" top my list most days - found them both around the same time, and they were two huge labyrinths occupying most of my attention for a period of about 3 months. Sounds like a list for another day... |
