If you want some easy going alternative rock with an electronic twist, the first two albums certainly won't see you stuck and will scratch a 90s itch very well. The rest are all fairly pleasant listens and don't stray too far from the previous material but also much more forgettable.

Predictable top three in the form of the holy trinity. A stunning trio of albums, the order of which took a lot of deliberation. Ask me again next month and the order could change. From that point on, CAN took a gradual yet somewhat respectful decline, managing to avoid reaching the horrendous depths of other 70s progressive flagbearers. Some of the worst CAN albums still have smidgeons of enjoyable groove to be found amongst the rubbish.

NOFX rarely fail to deliver enjoyable punk rock that is bursting with energy and their signature balance of political sneering and immature humour. Each album contains at least a few songs that bring down the quality of the surrounding material which sadly means none of their albums reach classic status for me. Consistently competent but never mind-blowing.

Yet another long recommended band I finally got round to checking. Releasing 6 albums, 2 of which are doubles, within 4 years is a massive achievement but even more to do so during significant creative tension and still managing to avoid a below average release. Great energy, earnest songwriting, hugely influential to the post-hardcore and alternative rock booms. What's not to love?

Top two are interchangeable on this commendable discography. Converge flawlessly balances insane levels of anger with clever structures, really understanding the importance of how to pace an album and avoid fatigue. I apologise to all the people who recommended this band to me over the past two decades. You were right all along.

Uncompromisingly heavy and delightfully dissonant, when it comes to death metal, Immolation’s discography is second only to Gorguts for me in terms of quality but being twice as prolific with output frequency, they must gain extra points. Boasting the most evil riffs, growls and drum rolls in the business, these guys are simply inimitable.

Apologies to the shoegaze squad. I respect this band but they don't enchant me the way the seem to do to countless others. Won't return to any albums other than Pygmalion and Souvlaki and even then, probably not all that often.

The earliest albums showed promise but from the critically acclaimed third album onwards, its just one long fucking yawwwwwwn. Nothing against these guys as musicians but it's all too fucking happy and lacks a sense of unease and tension. What's the deal with little drummer boy? Nearly every fucking track is an incessantly joyous festive march that builds up to fuck all - pa-rup-a-pum-pumming through the most anticlimactic Christmas day imaginable. The new album continues the blandness and its title "End" thankfully describes where I'm at on my journey with the band.
