10.25.21 | Solid list. Not sure if I could come together with 25, but here are some personal favorites from the '80s:
Beastie Boys - Paul's Boutique
David Bowie - Scary Monsters
Guns N' Roses - Appetite for Destruction
Jane's Addiction - Nothing's Shocking
Metallica - Ride the Lightning/Master of Puppets/...And Justice for All
Michael Jackson - Thriller
Nine Inch Nails - Pretty Hate Machine
Public Enemy - It Takes a Nation of Millions to Hold Us Back
R.E.M. - Life's Rich Pageant
Rush - Permanent Waves/Moving Pictures
Slayer - Reign in Blood/South of Heaven | biggzhc
10.25.21 | heard all but 2 albums on your list JKing92 haven't heard R.E.M. - Life's Rich Pageant, but I listened to Murmur and hated it. I've heard Moving Pictures by Rush, thought it was ok. haven't heard Permanent waves. | biggzhc
10.25.21 | Snake. lucky you, Guns & Roses isn't suppose to be on this list, I fucked up... Siouxsie and the Banshees, are suppose to have a album at number 17, Tinderbox. that moves Gun & Roses to 26. I'll fix it soon. | JKing92
10.25.21 | I'd say that if you didn't like Murmur, I'm not sure whether or not you'll dig Life's Rich Pageant, given that while the music has a clearer sound (thanks primarily to the presence of producer Don Gehman, known for his work with John Mellencamp in the early '80s, and then later on Hootie and the Blowfish in the mid-'90s), if you weren't a fan of Michael Stipe's vocals on Murmur, I don't know whether or not you'll enjoy them on Pageant -- it was definitely where he began enunciating more (most especially on songs like "Fall On Me"), but there are still songs where his vocals have the distinctively indecipherable flair of old. I understand why you may not think much of what you've heard of R.E.M. -- in fact, I'll admit that Stipe's vocals took time for me to really warm to -- but I personally enjoy them quite a lot myself (though I think they were at their best in the early '90s. My favorite album from them is definitely Automatic for the People, which is classic from front to back in my opinion).
As for Permanent Waves, in many ways it kind of is "proto-Moving Pictures." While even as far back as the mid-'70s Rush had the occasional song with pop hooks ("Fly By Night"), the chief distinction between their '80s work and their '70s work was how their newfound embrace of pop song structures began to help them find a genuine mainstream audience, thanks to singles like "The Spirit of Radio" from Permanent Waves and "Tom Sawyer" and "Limelight" from Moving Pictures. While I prefer Moving Pictures (the album I think is their best) over Permanent Waves, the latter is definitely my second favorite Rush album, and if you thought Moving Pictures was alright I'd give Permanent Waves at least one chance to see if it's your thing. | Ryus
