10 Favorite Young Thug Tracks

NOT RANKED. GO APESHIT GO GODZILLA BAE BACK IT UP.

Slime Season 3

“Slime Shit”

A dark, deep, and sleazy tune with super catchy chord progression and pretty unique drum programming all things told. Plus, how can you resist dude rhyming “lighting up your tacos” with “give him surgery, no lipo' – this slime shit is satisying as hell. 'Slatt!'

BEAUTIFUL THUGGER GIRLS

“Daddy's Birthday”

I think this mixtape is a little underrated... I love the way it strips Thugger's sound back a bit and allows for experimentation—mind you, some of this experimentation falls flat despite being enjoyable, but it still shows another adventurous side of the artist that I can't dismiss. “Daddy's Birthday” is my favorite here, and if I'm being honest it's the song that got me truly interested in his discog. The way the deep bass interplays with the keyboard lead is so simple, but so effective, leaving ample room for Thug's voice and the percussion to really shine.

Punk

“Day Before”

Wow, this song. Honestly, sometimes I just listen to it on repeat. Deceptively complex, dripping with sincere emotion, and an excellent example of the beautiful aesthetic present throughout the Punk album.

Did you know Mac Miller and Young Thug recorded this song the day before Mac Miller died? I didn't until making this list, but man, that is one hell of a coincidence given the title. *shivers*

'It's what it is though... Yeah, yeah, it's what it is though...'

So Much Fun

My favorite thugger release. Yeah, yeah, I get it, he peaked mid 2010s or whatever—I DON'T CARE. This album consolidates literally every single thing that makes Young Thug's music so captivating and is a perfect listening experience front-to-back. Jeffery is still the best thing he ever did, and probably ever will do, but 9 times out of 10 when I want to listen to Thug, I reach for this. It truly is so much fun.

"Ecstasy"

Only a Young Thug track could feature Machine Gun Kelly and still be one of the best on an album. And honestly, MGK sounds pretty good on it. Goddamn.

So Much Fun

"Sup Mate"

'WIPE YOUR NOSE!' Enough said.

So Much Fun

"I Bought Her"

That 'ahh!' sample is fucking godlike. Lyrics about buying your b*tch a bag never sounded so good.

"I'm Scared"

I just cooked a opp on the goddamn stove. This track is on some Three 6 worship and I love that for it. 'Oh, reallyyyy? Yah.' But the Thugger touch is unmistakeable and the track's character is all his own. All the verses on here are amazing, and the way Doe Boy vocalizes the sound of a burst of bullets from a gun (hrrrahh!) is so good. Slightly off-beat, perfectly swung, with a recurring chipmunk vocal chop at just the right level in the mix...this is peak music right here.

JEFFERY

The particular way this mixtape blends unapologetically emotive leads with the harder side of modern trap music is unlike anything I have ever heard. It's equal parts beefy and lean, sentimental and stoic: a seeming contradiction in terms in much the same way a “gangster with a dress” is. There is not a wasted moment here and it kills me to have to pick just a few, but here goes...

“Harambe”

Say what you want about the Harambe meme and whether or not Thugger is being sincere about the dedication on this track, but his pure expression is undeniable. Dude does stuff with his voice here I have not heard in this genre before and it sounds fucking great.
9Young Thug
JEFFERY

“Guwop”

Filled with features and never feels weighed down, just the opposite in fact. Yes, this track is uplifting, and something I reach for if I ever need a pick-me-up. God, Unity, Wisdom, Opportunity, Power. Ya dig, ya dig?

"Wyclef Jean"

A universal favorite for damn good reason. The minute those guitar samples cut in, you know it's ON. If this doesn't make your hips, or shoulders, or neck move in any way, you do not have a soul.
