Rec Me Rap/Hip-Hop!

I've never been a fan of rap, even though my peers and close friends have been for years and I've been constantly exposed to it since early childhood. It has always struck me as repetitive and bland and pretty dumbed-down, both lyrically and stylistically. That being said, getting more into exploring music the past couple years has taught me that most of my preconceived notions about music genres are almost entirely wrong. There are a number of users on here with taste that aligns pretty closely with my own that hold certain hip-hop in pretty high regard so I've gotten even more curious. So, rec me anything in the realm of hip-hop you dig - all styles and subgenres welcome! I'm always willing to try new things.

Pick any early Tribe album. Or all of them. You won't be disappointed...this one happens to be my favorite. These guys are the quintessential jazzy hip-hop group. (Masochist)

This album turns the braggadocio thing on its head, assuming that's one of your problems with hip-hop. It's filled with descriptions of ugly, weird characters and references the fact that they themselves are a niche act in a half-dead scene. Mostly funny, occasionally poignant, always bars.

Also Cities Aviv - Come To Life for some life-affirming shit. Different brand to most the recs here.

You can't have a list of greatest hip-hop albums without at least mentioning this one. Short, jazzy, and easily digestible but surprisingly dense with a lot to unpack.

This album is Run The Jewels beta...except, as good as Run The Jewels is, this is better than all of them. One of the best hip-hop albums of the previous decade.

Only Built 4 Cuban Linx... Pt II

Masochist

The first OB4CL is a necessary album, so listen to that. I'm recommending this one so that you don't pass it by, as I think it's one of the best Wu-adjacent projects to ever be released. Even better if you listen to this after the first one, and after Wu-Tang's '36 Chambers', so you can catch the references.
