12.16.23 | Cities suck ass. Moved to the middle of nowhere a couple years ago and it's been the best thing. |
ArsMoriendi
12.16.23 | I have the opposite feeling about cities
Even a decently populated suburb felt too desolate for me, moving to a big city was definitely what I needed
Different strokes and all that |

12.16.23 | Southampton. Tbf, it is really nice but as someone who has always lived in small towns, I am not quite used to it yet. |
Ryus
12.16.23 | oh ur english and u dont live in london nvm yeah i would probably hate that too |
Zac124
12.16.23 | No way I'll ever live in London. Being their for a day is difficult enough. It is great for concerts, that's it lol. |
zakalwe
12.16.23 | I lived in Southampton as well in the late 90s (very near The Dell football ground) when I went to Uni (the shit one) but fucked it off.
Some good boozers but the place was a bit shit.

Zac124
12.16.23 | @pizzamachine That is a bold statement lol. I'll definitely have to check them now. |
Zac124
12.16.23 | @zakalwe Yeah, kinda of my opinion of the place too. The Hobbit pub is great though. Raises my opinion of the city quite a bit. |
Ryus
12.16.23 | damn
i love london, would love to live there for some time |

12.16.23 | yeah, too busy for me. i find it overwhelming. but the place does have many great venues. |

12.16.23 | As for London I was on the South Bank last week with St Paul’s all lit up and it is one of the most stunning views I’ve ever seen, shame the city itself has largely become a homogenous beacon of globalism bollocks.
Still some lovely places though around Holborn and a lot of parts in the South West.

ArsMoriendi
12.16.23 | “Globalism bollocks”
And by that you mean? |

12.16.23 | It’s all franchised restaurants, cashless businesses, high rents and equally high rise apartment buildings bought by the Chinese and Russian investors on the tax dodge with no fucker living in them.

12.16.23 | still the best city in england by far |
zakalwe
12.16.23 | A trip to Oxford Street used to be a thing to look forward to.
Now it’s all laundered ’Candy Stores’ and complete tat.
Best city for people is Manchester, for a laugh Liverpool. |
Ryus
12.16.23 | id rather die than live in either of those places tbh |
zakalwe
12.16.23 | Haha.could be worse could be Birmingham.
Best thing about England without question is the small towns and villages that are everywhere.
Some absolute beauties. |
Ryus
12.16.23 | yeah i never went to any of those but they seem lovely |
MarsKid
12.16.23 | I was similar to you in the sense I didn't think I'd ever enjoy cities, but Columbus has been a ton of fun so far. Plenty to do and still manages to have this weird small-town Midwest vibe despite being one of the bigger metros in the region.
Helps that it's such a surprisingly diverse place, feel like I can really be myself here/figure out who I am without fearing judgement. |
MarsKid
12.16.23 | So I guess it really depends on the city would be my point. Like New York would probably overwhelm me if I lived there but CBus is the perfect size. |

12.16.23 | I wouldn’t shed a tear never going to Manchester again, been three times with the lads as one of our mates lives there - we all hate it.
Even Leeds is better tbh, been out there a few times
Been to Birmingham but haven’t ever been out after dark there
Greater London is like ten cities together - I can name about fifty areas I absolutely love and the same I can’t stand at all - goes the same for individual music venues too
We do regular pub crawls…Greenwich, Chiswick, Sutton, Earls Court, Camden, Angel, Kensington, Putney…done loads of them, limited planning, some are classic and some are awful (Victoria to Kensington was a soulless crawl while it was pissing it down)
|
Zac124
12.16.23 | @MarsKid Never been to any city in the US (apart from stopping at an airport which was not fun) so I don't know about any place there. I do prefer quieter places but cities are amazing for pubs and music. There is no doubt about that. |
Ryus
12.16.23 | go to nyc its the best city (im completely unbiased) |
DoofDoof
12.16.23 | For old pubs London is hard to beat…Greenwich alone has about twenty great ones, some good subterranean jazz dens too |

12.16.23 | i understand not liking cities if u grew up in the countryside but if u generally prefer something as soul-sucking as the north american suburbs then ur demonic |
DoofDoof
12.16.23 | Good choices again Zak
Think with the lads likely destinations for the next few years might be:
- Split
- Rhodes
- Oslo, Copenhagen or Helsinki (maybe two of these)
- Valencia, Seville or Porto
- maybe a UK one, someone joked Cardiff but stranger things have happened...my buddy is scared of scousers so he'll veto Liverpool

12.16.23 | 'i understand not liking cities if u grew up in the countryside but if u generally prefer something as soul-sucking as the north american suburbs then ur demonic'
I've lived in about five English villages, lived in two different areas of central London, and have lived in the suburbs of London and I've got to say for me I prefer the suburbs a lot.
True countryside is worst but when I met my wife she lived in an area on the very outer suburbs and you could walk into the countryside, farms or woods in about ten minutes and that I guess was my absolute ideal. It was too expensive to buy a house big enough to also have a kid there though unfortunately, priced out.
Central was alright but I never felt I was really 'going home' after work as I just associated central London with work - the office was about a 25 minute walk away. |

12.16.23 | I wish you luck acclimatising but Southampton is one of our shittier cities. I chose my uni solely based on it being the most rural uni in the UK but it was not possible to make a life there after uni so I went home to the south coast of England. I now live in the middle of nowhere in northern England and am the happiest I've ever been. Glasgow is my favourite UK city. Singapore my favourite non-UK city. |
DoofDoof
12.16.23 | Southampton is supposed to be rough as arseholes, I've never been but I've been to Portsmouth and I guess it's a bit like that.
Singapore when I visited was far too humid for me and you speak to the locals and they just say the city is effectively rebuilt every ten years - interesting place though.
I want to go to Glasgow...all my favourite music at the moment seems to derive from Glasgow, legendary music scene. |
zakalwe
12.16.23 | Singapore was ridiculously humid, I was bitten to fuck by fire ants as well.

12.16.23 | Singapore is the only city I've been to that I really felt safe in, except maybe Reykjavik. Not been to Japan but I imagine any city there is also very safe. |

12.17.23 | "good practice techniques or essential theory stuff": I doubt that you're "shit" on the guitar, but I understand the frustration. Here's a theory site I've wanted to spend time with someday. It's kind of corny and not as good as the training we'd get in college with a human doing the aural drilling, but it might be interesting to play around with. The one I linked is pretty basic, but they offer a full course in theory: https://trainer.thetamusic.com/en/content/html5-speed-pitch/1 |

12.18.23 | Hey man I will second you on the cities perspective, though, that will probably run against the prevailing sentiment of most people on here. I like my space, land, privacy, ability to be loud, incredibly easy access to nature, and the ability to do large projects. Worked in a downtown and hated it, my childhood home and my first home were in the suburbs, and now I'm much more comfortable in my current home on the edge of what most may call an "exburb" - it's right on the cusp of something that could be reasonably called "rural". It's sorta all I could ever ask for in relation to my attainment. |

12.18.23 | NYC rules. Love living there
Would love to visit other cities, but I’ve only been to a few other major ones like:
-Buffalo (college…so 5 years)
-Budapest (was there for 2 weeks)
-Philadelphia (1 day for a concert)
-Tel Aviv (part of a Birthight trip lol)
-Jerusalem (see above) …
-Does Newark count as major? Prob not. Newark sucks but I saw NIN there sooo
Was a minor so couldn’t explore fully:
-Los Angeles
-Las Vegas
-Seattle
-Portland
-Vancouver
