I've been feeling lately that I'm burning through albums too hastily without giving them the mental consideration they deserve. This might be a weekly thing, could end up monthly, or I could give up on entirely, I just want to jot down some thoughts so I don't feel I'm just mindlessly consuming. | | 1 |  | Throbbing Gristle
20 Jazz Funk Greats
Gonna be honest I listened to this because someone drew the album cover in the style of Peanuts, I’m glad I did tho because this is quite cool. While it’s fun to imagine someone in 1979 getting this expecting 20 Jazz Funk Greats, I also get a kick out of imagining future noise freaks in 1979 checking this out and thinking “holy shit this music is possible???”. The songs don’t make an immediate impact but it’s the finer details that really matter, discomfort and sleaze creeping in at the seams.

Speaking in Tongues
Occurred to me that, even though I’ve heard plenty of Talking Heads songs and love Stop Making Sense, I never listened to one of their LPs in full. So I decided to jam the record where more than half of it was in Stop Making Sense, and guess what it rips. The thing that surprised me the most was how airy the production is, makes it feel like there’s space even when all the instruments are playing. | | 3 |  | Massive Attack
Blue Lines
Always had a fascination with trip hop. Something extremely 90s cool about it, like entering an underground club where everyone smokes. “Unfinished Sympathy” was the big hit for good reason, but special praise goes to “Be Thankful For What You Got”, which I at first thought it sampled Sade’s “Keep Looking” but is actually a William DeVaughn cover, and “Hymn of the Big Wheel” for its conflicted emotions. Love how hopeful Horace Andy sings yet the lyrics and music point to something bleaker. Fantastic record, whole album goes down so smoothly. | | 4 |  | Lunar Chamber

Undulating Waves of Rainbiotic Iridescence
I debated on whether or not to include albums I already listened to before in this and I decided that it wpuld be optional. Anyway, this record still ungodly whips. Some of the best drumming I’ve ever heard, tech death or otherwise. | | 6 |  | The Prodigy
Music for the Jilted Generation
Another relisten. Jammed this a lot in high school but haven’t listened to it a while, was glad to find that I love it even more as an adult. Brilliant song structures throughout, so many cool little moments that get gradually layered on. Moments that blew me away this tine around were the “bass line” on “Break and Enter”, the tranquil first half of “The Heat (The Energy)”, and the high-strung last 90 seconds to “Poison”. Peepshow
It’s been very rewarding going through Siouxsie and the Banshee’s discog, seemingly meeting pop music on its own turns. While some of the more ominous elements of their sound have subsided a bit, it shows the band still have some weird turns at this stage in their career. | | 8 |  | Sum 41
All Killer No Filler
Checked this out due to Sum 41 breaking up, it’s fine. I know it’s easy to make fun of aging pop punk bands but these guys had as steady of a career you could ask for in a pop punk band, give them their due. | | 9 |  | Fountains of Wayne
Welcome Interstate Managers
Great power pop record. While it’s easy to think of these guys as one hit wonders but Adam Schlesinger and Chris Collingwood are fantastic songwriters, with a Paddy McAloon-esque eye for detail. These are 17 great power pop tracks, and while it’s definitely too long, it goes into a lot of different directions and I can’t really think of any song in particular to cut. | |

05.16.23 | Nice idea. I am also guilty of slapping ratings down without giving enough spins, I generally try to give albums at least a few goes between speakers and headphones.
6 has also grown on me since the glory days of the class As. Listened a few months ago and bumped to a 4.5.
I'm unabashed in my plan to retain 8 in my 5s forever although I have some serious purging to do there overall. |
