10 | | Motorpsycho The All Is One
N.O.X.
Okay, I really had to put another Motorpsycho in here, because this is the prog epic of the year clocking in at 42 minutes and 5 different parts. It's really hard to pin down here, just gonna say I love the inclusion of strings in this and how this epic unfolds. Just listen to it, it is worth your time. |
9 | | King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard K.G.
Intrasport
I'm just gonna quote Gibleson's soundoff here: "They really went and made a microtonal electronic funk song, the absolute mad lads" Sums it up pretty nicely lol. |
8 | | King Buffalo Dead Star
Red Star Part 1&2
Spacey 16 minute epic of psych rock? Hell Yeah! And you know they will keep this continuously interesting because it's King Buffalo, one of the most underrated acts in the genre, so give this one a try! |
7 | | Lucid Planet II
Organic Hard Drive
I've to admit I have a weak spot for psytrance, probably dating back to a time where I took more drugs lol, so this one is my leftfield hit of the year, because I just expected some more Tool worship from these guys (there is still enough), but you know combing prog metal with psytrance works astonishingly well on this. |
6 | | The Ocean Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic
Jurrasic/Cretaceous
This 13 minute post-metal epic smashes your face back to the jurrasic age. Massive riffage, great vocal performances, well structrured and the pace changes on this are amazing. |
5 | | Crippled Black Phoenix Ellengaest
Lost
This took a while till it hit me, but when it hits, it really fucking hits. The vocal performances are outstanding and the instrumentals are on point as well. THe music video is really hard to digest, but i's a really fitting reality check. Crushing song. |
4 | | Elephant Tree Habits
Wasted
This was a really tough call between this and 'Bird', but I decided to go with the catchiness of 'Wasted', because this was stuck in my head for sooo fucking long and the lyrics really speak to me:
I'm wasting my time
Trying to find
A reason to rhyme
A reason why
Strange things
Are happening
In my mind |
3 | | Emma Ruth Rundle and Thou May Our Chambers Be Full
The Valley
What an absolute massive closer. The chemistry between these two acts is unmatched this year. I'm craving for more of this collaboration. |
2 | | Motorpsycho The All Is One
The Magpie
I absolutely love Motorpsycho, some of you may have noticed that, and this song is becoming one of my favorite Motorpsycho tracks of all time, great songwriting, massive riff and a technical ability that is without comparison inside their genre. |
1 | | All Them Witches Nothing as the Ideal
Rats in Ruin
There you go, my SOTY is this beauty. Love this dudes voice and the crescendo this is building up to is maximum bliss. Losing one member and playing without the keyboards really forced them to focus on their songwriting and it paid of. |
