07.15.20 | great to see III getting some love |
MementoMori
07.15.20 | @Bedex: Underrated record for sure. |
porcupinetheater
07.15.20 | Aren't all of their records kind of rated comparably just about everywhere? Once they found their sound they just keep hitting it |
MementoMori
07.15.20 | @porcupinetheater: I'd say they did improve upon the formula they pioneered earlier in their career, with especially the last two records being far more mature from a musical and compositional point of view and probably more ostensibly post-metal than any of their earlier material. |
Bedex
07.15.20 | III shows more of their hardcore roots. Comparing The Pain It Is Shapeless on the record to the live version is telling, they play it far slower now than they did in the original version
Of course production was a lot rawer before V too |
MementoMori
07.15.20 | I'd say their earlier material is considerably more sludgy and hardcore oriented, with their later material going fully down the post-metal rabbit-hole with a strong(er) emphasis on texture, atmosphere and subtle dynamism. The differences themselves are considerably subtle, but nevertheless impactful. |
porcupinetheater
07.15.20 | Oh, for sure, but it still feels like since III it's been more of a gradual refinement and honing than the reinvention from the first couple Masses. And it's all been fucking rad since III, too, one of the best live acts around on top of everything else. |
MementoMori
07.15.20 | @porcupinetheater: Indeed, as I already pointed out above, the quality of the band's musical output has (positively) changed far more, than has their aesthetic. The clips of their live performances are absolutely incredible, I remember Scott Kelly from Neurosis heaping praises upon them for their live performances as well. |
DominionMM1
07.16.20 | theyre stellar live |
Deez
07.16.20 | My boys
Mass 4>Mass 3>Mass 5>Mass 6>Mass 2> Mass 1
I hold Alive and Afterlife completely separately
'theyre stellar live'
I think im up to around 25 times Ive seen them now either electric or acoustic. Then all the side projects etc etc |
porcupinetheater
07.16.20 | Holy shit tbh didn’t know they did acoustic sets, can imagine the adjectives but not the experience. |
Deez
07.16.20 | Oh dude when you have 30 mins watch this its tremendous
https://youtu.be/fgHDTwV1KaU |
DominionMM1
07.16.20 | saw them with neurosis and converge and they had the best performance on the bill |
dedex
07.16.20 | Acoustic Amenra is a religious experience |
MementoMori
07.16.20 | @DominionMM1: What a bill though man...
@dedex: Oh yeah, my goodness. Then again, aren't they always a religious experience? |
dedex
07.16.20 | They are indeed. It's just less ritualistic, and more soothing. |
MementoMori
07.16.20 | @dedex: Especially the addition of that violin, so melancholic yet so beautiful. |
Inoculaeted
07.16.20 | 4=6>3>5>1 for me |
0xME
07.17.20 | this would be exactly my rating
I'm still bummed out about the fact that I would have seen them (and a shitton of other great bands) live this year but well... |
MementoMori
07.17.20 | @0xME: That does seem unfortunate, although I'm sure the opportunity will arise again in the near future. |
