| Whats Your Musical "Journey"?
Whats been the trajectory of your shitty taste in music your whole life?
TL:DR - We all like shit music and should stop pretending otherwise. | 1 | | Evanescence Fallen
2003 - age 9
Heard this on MTV2 when I was 9 years old. Then my parents bought the CD for me for some unknown reason. All a sudden, I went from being the kid in class who was fat, looked like Harry Potter to the goth kid in class who was fat, and looked like Harry Potter. | 2 | | My Chemical Romance Three Cheers for Sweet Revenge
2005 - age 11
I already had a penchant for wearing black and the god-forsaken mid-2000's accessories you could buy from Claires or some shit (Even though I am and always have a dude). This was like the biggest thing in all human recorded history when it hit my middle school. I wasn't even looked at weird for loving this -- every kid in the damn class did.
[this album is still pretty good tbh] | 3 | | Kanye West Graduation
2008 - age 14
So after middle school I (naturally) went to high school, and my high school was more racially mixed. That's the politically correct way of saying I was one of like 3 dozen non-white trash white kids. As such, I became very into rap music. Especially Mr. West, Lil Wayne, all those god awful late 2000's gangster rap. I even started recording rap mixtapes in my bedroom -- which ultimately scared the shit out of my parents.
I also was fat and bullied, and dropped out in senior year so yeah | 4 | | Metallica Ride the Lightning
2010 - Age 15/16
Once I found the "Big 4" and mostly Metallica, I started growing my hair long (RIP my hair) and wearing combat boots. This was just the beginning though. Metal is, percentage wise and adoration wise, the biggest chunk of my life for sure. I got through the entry phase, found death metal -- prog metal -- black metal -- every imaginable subgenre. I still love metal.
But let's continue. | 5 | | The Strokes First Impressions of Earth
2013 - Age 20
I got my HS degree, and started uni. I lost a ton of weight, bought trendy clothes, got the trendy hair cut, and kind of moved on from the metalhead years. I became obsessed with those early 2000's garage/indie rock bands, namely the Strokes, Arcade Fire, Bloc Party, etc. This was a good thing. I grew a lot and it kinda was the right move. | 6 | | Morning Musume Second Morning
2014 - Age 21
So somewhere sometime I found J-pop on Youtube and it just consumed my soul. I was studying French as a native language in uni and immediately, I mean within like weeks, dropped that and started on Japanese. The downside was non-existent, other than the obvious questions of "What the fuck is this? When did you start liking this?" | 7 | | Orange Caramel Catallena
2014 - Still 20 or 21
From that, I found K-pop and it was equally consuming, although I didn't alter my life trajectory for it. I will admit my interest in K-pop has waned A LOT in the past like 2 years. But I still think if you dig through enough of the trash, you find some pretty good groups, and some really well made pop songs. | 8 | | My Bloody Valentine Loveless
2017 - Age 23
In 2016 I moved to Japan, and my university had a cover band club. So basically you make a cover band and play for the other members. It was rad. I didn't fully join because I was busy, but I went to a meeting or two. At one, this cover band was doing My Bloody Valentine. The amps were on like 4300000, and the drone was real. But man, I was like WHAT IS THIS??? I suddenly found music I genuinely had never heard before and I found out it was shoegaze, blah blah, and that sent me into the past few years | 9 | | The Sisters of Mercy First and Last and Always
2018 - Age 25
I came full circle. I've worn black almost everyday since I was like 13, but, hearing this, and going down the real goth rock rabbit hole has somehow tied together all this (So far). I'm confused by own timeline, and this masturbatory post will end now, but

05.02.19 | Hi. | zakalwe
05.02.19 | Hi dude I’m fascinated by all this stuff, I’m interested in people’s stories.
Here’s mine.
https://www.sputnikmusic.com/list.php?memberid=1010176&listid=148288
Since this list was cobbled together jazz has become a big part of my listening regime. There’s just something about it that pushes the right buttons. | tyman128
05.03.19 | so, based off of simply albums that were my favorite at the time, here is my musical journey:
2007 (6 years old) - Comatose by Skillet
2009 (8 years old) - Innocence and Instinct by RED
2011 (10 years old) - Phobia by Breaking Benjamin
2013 (12 years old) - Between Here and Lost by Love and Death (the first album I had ever bought on release day)
2015(14 years old) - Issues by KoRn, Slave to Nothing by Fit For a King, Children of Fire by Oh, Sleeper
2018 (17 years old, when I first joined sputnik and my music taste started changing a lot) - One of Us Is the Killer by TDEP, To Pimp a Butterfly by Kendrick Lamar, In Shallow Seas We Sail by Emery, [Untitled] by mewithoutYou, Time Will Die by Rolo Tomassi
Present Day - Teeth by Vile Ones (just found this today and am really digging it), Sol Distorsion by Sol Distorsion, Diamond Eyes by Deftones
and all throughout my life, people have always been surprised by the music I listen to and the type of music I learn on drums and guitar because they don't expect me to enjoy this type of stuff based off of persona. They often assume I either listen to more classical stuff (I have no clue why) or that I listen to pop radio (despite how many times I rant about how much I hate the music industry on the radio nowadays to my friends) | Calc
05.03.19 | classical---green day---the fall of troy---the dear hunter----sachiko M
and since bar sachiko was the end of all music my journey is over | spiritualkaedama
05.03.19 | Actually, music is over.
All music.

05.03.19 | dang it, I had just started getting heavily involved in music... time to move on I guess | Minushuman24
05.03.19 | Hmmmm
I had an entire fucking thing written up but now my timelines are all confused and I'll just make it a list in the future.
Joan Jett (5) --> Limp Bizkit (8) --> Drowning Pool (9) --> Godsmack (12) --> Motorhead/ACDC/Black Sabbath (13) --> Metallica/Iron Maiden (15) --> This Site --> Dead Kennedys (16) -->Gaslight Anthem/Misfits/Defeater (17) --> Brand New/Wonder Years (18) --> Replacements/pixies/Bowie (20) --> Menzingers/Jawbreaker (23) I don't know the last few years have been such a blur that it gets hard to pick out a single band.

05.03.19 | Age 7-11: Listened mainly to rap. Mainly Eminem, 50 Cent, D12 etc. Also a bit of Gorillaz.
Age 12: Discovered Rock music and listened mainly to Kiss, Metallica, Slayer, Led Zeppelin etc. Pretty much just the popular, well known Rock and Metal bands.
Age 13-16: Started listening to heavier music such as Slipknot, Mastodon, Morbid Angel etc. Got more into Death, Thrash, Black metal while still listening to Rock bands like Rush, Kiss etc.
Age 17-22: Started getting more into Prog due to discovering Opeth. Listened to mainly Prog (Opeth, Porcupine Tree, Steven Wilson). And also a lot of Death Metal (Morbid Angel, Suffocation, Death) and Black Metal (Emperor, Dimmu Borgir) Also got back into Gorillaz.
Age 22-Now: I started listening to a lot of Drum n Bass, also a bit of R&B. I wanted to expand my diversity in music (something I'm still doing) I now listen to anything from Death Metal to R&B to Drum n Bass to Noise Rock. 05.03.19 | Idk but most of it started here. | Dedes
05.03.19 | 12-Judas Priest. Prior to this music didn't mean much of anything to me. It was also around this age I fucked hard with glam metal.
13-pop punk and some hxc started to seep into my life, i.e Tigers Jaw (local band for me alongside Title Fight). By 14 I moved a lil further with Touche Amore and random meathead hxc bands like Dead End Path.
14-Between 13 and 14 I also got into Tool which completely changed the way I treated music as faux woke as that sounds. For my unlearned 13 y/o brain it was transcendental and made me wanna jam high IQ musix like Dream Theater.
15-the start of death metal baby. Mainly just Death, Nile and Fleshgod. Twas also turnt to Behemoth by a friend and to Deafheaven by Anthony Fantano, the former sparkling my interested in trad black metal and the other in the alt side of it.
16-Post hxc and mxc. Lots of it. Counterparts (favorite band at the time) , Misery Signals, sorta Shai Hulud, After the Burial. Ye good times.
17-i believe I was 17 when I joined this site? By now I jammed a lotta Opeth and Ne Obliviscaris and Be'lakor which...hasn't changed tbh.
18-now
Whatever I fucking want tbh | Dedes
