5 masterpieces I can’t digest- part 1

I think everybody has a few of these- records that, despite being generally apraised as masterpieces, just don’t speak to them in any way. I have a theory that some records aren’t actually good at all, but had the right marketing at the right time, and then people were just nodding to each other in approval of how awesome some of these are, embarrassed to admit that they actually don’t like them. I will throw away the throes of fakery, and just go with it, spilling the beans on what I just don’t get. Important notice- the case isn’t that I don’t like the given genre. It would not be fair if I debunked a jazz masterpiece, if I simply don’t like jazz that much. And one more thing- constructive arguments in the comments section which would make me listen to the records again would be great.
1Emerson, Lake and Palmer
Brain Salad Surgery

I like progressive rock. Metal very much, and listen to it a lot, that’s a fact. I also appreciate the classic side of it, Camel, King Crimson, and some of the less known bands. One of my little CD shelves is dedicated to classic progressive music, and I try to update it with the essentials from time to time. Brain Salad Surgery was one of the purchases, of course I knew fragments of it earlier, but never listened to the whole thing board to board. After doing so many times, I concluded that, except ‘’Jerusalem’’, which isn’t actually theirs, the only piece I really do like is ‘’Still you turn me on’’. The rest is a rather chaotic mixture, which to me resembles the first records I made with my 2 friends at the age of 8/9, using an unplugged cheap guitar, a keyboard and a few pans as a drum kit.
2Dead Can Dance
Within the Realm of a Dying Sun

Dam, maybe I am too young and immature. I first encountered reviews of this album in the 90’s, when I was very young and starting to be interested in music. I loved the cover and craved to get to know the band more. This was amplified by the fact that every review shouted out what an absolute masterpiece this is. How absolutely incredible and hypnotic this music is. Well, I grew into the whole 4D records, Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus etc. but still, after listening to this record multiple times, I fail to see what is so incredibly awesome in this record. I remember liking one fragment of one track very much, but that’s it. I would really love to like this record though.
3Led Zeppelin
Led Zeppelin III

If this won’t get me assassinated, I don’t know what will. From the great hard rock/ heavy metal 3, I like Black Sabbath most, right after, if not on the same place, is Deep Purple, then it’s Led Zeppelin. Betwenn Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are other bands of ‘’the sort’’ such as Budgie (completely awesome) and Mountain- what not to like? And I do Like Led Zeppelin, and I do listen to them, it’s just that I don’t appraise them so much. The way I see it is that there is an awesome, energetic opener, and then a lot of folky acoustic playing. This is of course how I REMEMBER these records, as purposefully I am not listening to them while writing, not to be biased. I think that Greta Van Fleet, despite the copycats they are, have more melodies and a better grip of what is enjoyable. There, I said it.
4Motorhead
Ace of Spades

Can someone tell me what is so different between this album and most of the others, that it is regarded a prodigy? No disrespect, I love all the 3 original members, they are a very important part of rock/ metal history, and all 3 are unfortunately dead, which, from what I know, hasn’t happened all that often so far. I mean even 80 % of the original Rolling Stones are alive, and 50% of the Beatles, so this is a sad dusk of an era. Anyway… I like Motorhead very much, as I said, but to me it’s a band that you just put on anything, preferably from the first period, loud of course, rock out for a bit, and then go back to something else. But to name this album one of the milestones of metal, and to say that Ace of Spades is one of the best songs out there (as was described in one of the books about Motorhead that I read), I just don’t understand. I think the reason is that- like many of the above records, this had many ‘’firsts’’. I’m no drummer historian, but apparently this had one of the
5Slayer
Reign in Blood

From what I noticed, often appraised as one of the ‘’fastest and most fierce albums of all time’’. Yeah, I get it, as is with Motorhead- it probably made nuns faint when it came out, and the atmosphere is awesome, I must agree, but for example, when I was about 9 I got from my Parents ‘’Hell Awaits’’, and I thought then that it was much better than this. It isn’t much of a problem to make a bloody fast and aggressive record. The art is in shaping it in such a way that you actually feel the heat of the studio (or frost, appropriately). I’m no big black metal fan, but Immortal (which some of you I’m sure don’t consider ‘’trv’’ or ‘’kvlt’’ enough to be named black metal), is just awesome. As far I’m consider, you could put some of it on the radio, and it wouldn’t cause much havoc. But, then again, this sure can be considered a milestone of some sort, because it but the bar up for future bands. But I find that not being enough to be called ‘’an all time masterpiece’’.
