| 5 masterpieces I can’t digest- part 1
I think everybody has a few of these- records that, despite being generally apraised as masterpieces, just don’t speak to them in any way. I have a theory that some records aren’t actually good at all, but had the right marketing at the right time, and then people were just nodding to each other in approval of how awesome some of these are, embarrassed to admit that they actually don’t like them. I will throw away the throes of fakery, and just go with it, spilling the beans on what I just don’t get. Important notice- the case isn’t that I don’t like the given genre. It would not be fair if I debunked a jazz masterpiece, if I simply don’t like jazz that much. And one more thing- constructive arguments in the comments section which would make me listen to the records again would be great. | 1 | | Emerson, Lake and Palmer Brain Salad Surgery
I like progressive rock. Metal very much, and listen to it a lot, that’s a fact. I also appreciate the classic side of it, Camel, King Crimson, and some of the less known bands. One of my little CD shelves is dedicated to classic progressive music, and I try to update it with the essentials from time to time. Brain Salad Surgery was one of the purchases, of course I knew fragments of it earlier, but never listened to the whole thing board to board. After doing so many times, I concluded that, except ‘’Jerusalem’’, which isn’t actually theirs, the only piece I really do like is ‘’Still you turn me on’’. The rest is a rather chaotic mixture, which to me resembles the first records I made with my 2 friends at the age of 8/9, using an unplugged cheap guitar, a keyboard and a few pans as a drum kit. | 2 | | Dead Can Dance Within the Realm of a Dying Sun
Dam, maybe I am too young and immature. I first encountered reviews of this album in the 90’s, when I was very young and starting to be interested in music. I loved the cover and craved to get to know the band more. This was amplified by the fact that every review shouted out what an absolute masterpiece this is. How absolutely incredible and hypnotic this music is. Well, I grew into the whole 4D records, Cocteau Twins, Bauhaus etc. but still, after listening to this record multiple times, I fail to see what is so incredibly awesome in this record. I remember liking one fragment of one track very much, but that’s it. I would really love to like this record though. | 3 | | Led Zeppelin Led Zeppelin III
If this won’t get me assassinated, I don’t know what will. From the great hard rock/ heavy metal 3, I like Black Sabbath most, right after, if not on the same place, is Deep Purple, then it’s Led Zeppelin. Betwenn Deep Purple and Led Zeppelin are other bands of ‘’the sort’’ such as Budgie (completely awesome) and Mountain- what not to like? And I do Like Led Zeppelin, and I do listen to them, it’s just that I don’t appraise them so much. The way I see it is that there is an awesome, energetic opener, and then a lot of folky acoustic playing. This is of course how I REMEMBER these records, as purposefully I am not listening to them while writing, not to be biased. I think that Greta Van Fleet, despite the copycats they are, have more melodies and a better grip of what is enjoyable. There, I said it. | 4 | | Motorhead Ace of Spades
Can someone tell me what is so different between this album and most of the others, that it is regarded a prodigy? No disrespect, I love all the 3 original members, they are a very important part of rock/ metal history, and all 3 are unfortunately dead, which, from what I know, hasn’t happened all that often so far. I mean even 80 % of the original Rolling Stones are alive, and 50% of the Beatles, so this is a sad dusk of an era. Anyway… I like Motorhead very much, as I said, but to me it’s a band that you just put on anything, preferably from the first period, loud of course, rock out for a bit, and then go back to something else. But to name this album one of the milestones of metal, and to say that Ace of Spades is one of the best songs out there (as was described in one of the books about Motorhead that I read), I just don’t understand. I think the reason is that- like many of the above records, this had many ‘’firsts’’. I’m no drummer historian, but apparently this had one of the | 5 | | Slayer Reign in Blood
From what I noticed, often appraised as one of the ‘’fastest and most fierce albums of all time’’. Yeah, I get it, as is with Motorhead- it probably made nuns faint when it came out, and the atmosphere is awesome, I must agree, but for example, when I was about 9 I got from my Parents ‘’Hell Awaits’’, and I thought then that it was much better than this. It isn’t much of a problem to make a bloody fast and aggressive record. The art is in shaping it in such a way that you actually feel the heat of the studio (or frost, appropriately). I’m no big black metal fan, but Immortal (which some of you I’m sure don’t consider ‘’trv’’ or ‘’kvlt’’ enough to be named black metal), is just awesome. As far I’m consider, you could put some of it on the radio, and it wouldn’t cause much havoc. But, then again, this sure can be considered a milestone of some sort, because it but the bar up for future bands. But I find that not being enough to be called ‘’an all time masterpiece’’. | |

04.22.20 | Your parents bought you Hell Awaits when you were 9yrs old?
Christ. | DoofDoof
04.22.20 | On the scale of sounding like 'constantly getting their dicks wet' and 'sitting cross legged with a reefer and trying to make a pentagram' Sabbath are on one side and Zeppelin the other. I much prefer Zeppelin but I understand the Sabbath thing. | Archelirion
04.22.20 | Slayer is like when you've got your stupid friends round and you just make the hottest, gnarliest curry known to mankind and it's an absolute painful laugh while you're eating it but at the same time you're wishing you'd actually gone for something with a bit more flavour and just dialed it down a smidge so you could just have a chill time instead of everything becoming a big sweaty stingy blur that not even naan is helping | JohnnyoftheWell
04.22.20 | If you can't get into 2 but like 4AD stuff, listen to Spleen and Ideal a few times then come back to it later; that one has a lot of Within the Realm's vibe but a few more tropes of the label (and it's v good) | aydross121
04.22.20 | Who doesn't consider Immortal bm though
Also yeah ELP sucks | GhandhiLion
04.22.20 | ELP is a masterpiece of wank I guess | JohnnyoftheWell
04.22.20 | Forgot that Reign in Blood was so short. gonna finally jam it after this melt-banana comp and see which goes harder | BenThatsMyJamin
04.22.20 | "Your parents bought you Hell Awaits when you were 9yrs old?"
Hahaha that made me laugh too | Pratman
04.22.20 | @Zakalwe Yeah, I was either 9 or 10. I guess they thought that music rarely makes somebody a psychopath, which is right. I mean, at that age I saw it was scary and all, but I remember reading the lyrics and they didn't make much sense to me (they still don't, come to think of it), so I just listened. Happy days. | theBoneyKing
04.22.20 | Seconding Johnny's comment about WTROADS - it's an incredible album but definitely a bit different than most 4AD-core | JohnnyoftheWell
04.22.20 | ngl aged 9 I found Britney Spears and Kaiser Chiefs intimidating, idk what Slayer would have done to my headspace | GhandhiLion
04.22.20 | I was listening to mozart up til the age of 9 so kaiser chiefs intimidated me too. | Pratman
04.22.20 | Thanks for the 4AD recommendations, I'll definetely have a look at them. As far as Slayer goes, I couldn't take it all that seriously- the cover looked like a comic book, and the music sounded like a more agressive Metallica- but I must admit that I did feel a tad uncomfortable about the start of ''Hell Awaits'', with the demons asking you to join them, and from what I remember, I used to skip that. | JokineAugustus
04.22.20 | I never got the praise for Reign in Blood either. Pleasure to Kill>>>>>>>>>>>>>> | ReturnToRock
04.22.20 | 5 is one of mine as well. Along with Dark Side of the Moon (I know. But I can't) and maybe Led Zep IV (I like literally all of their other albums better.) | BenThatsMyJamin
04.22.20 | Brooooooo DSotM really?? | ReturnToRock
04.22.20 | @Ben I can't. I like The Wall just fine, but Dark Side bored me stupid when I listened to it. | Inoculaeted
04.22.20 | Archelirion's comment is hugely underrated. I love that. | ReturnToRock
04.22.20 | I also think a lot of these come down to context - like how 4 and 5 had never really been done before then (at least not where so many people could hear it.) In a day and age where every thrash band wants to be Slayer and there's lots of Motorhead sound-a-likes, they aren't quite as impressive, but you have to sort of imagine you were there in 1986 or whatever and how your mind would have been blown by this stuff back then (see also: Jimi Hendrix, Black Sabbath's debut.) | BigHans
04.22.20 | The fact you have Ace of SPades on this list tells me you didn't jam Love Me Like a Reptile or The Chase is Better than the Catch. | ReturnToRock
04.22.20 | @Hans hey dude! | rodrigo90
04.22.20 | Your parents bought you Hell Awaits when you were 9yrs old?
I listened to limp bizkit's hot dog when I was 10-11
GOD I LOVE ARGENTINA | rodrigo90
04.22.20 | Well, actually, English at that time was not even considered a second language in our country so....no harm on the vocabulary learning. | JohnnyoftheWell
04.22.20 | have listened to Reign in Blood and can confirm Arche is right lol | conesmoke
04.22.20 | Everyone rips on ELP but Tarkus rulz. Give me armadillo tanks anyday | GhandhiLion
04.22.20 | armadillo tanks' kinda cute | JohnnyoftheWell
04.22.20 | tarkus is a little bit terrible ngl | Nerdurosis
04.22.20 | one of my buddies loves thrash but hates Slayer. Craziest shit man. We all have our tastes though I 'spose | Archelirion
04.22.20 | @inoc, Johnny - u no it | zakalwe
04.22.20 | Hell awaits at 9
Hardcore porn at 11
Class A drugs at 14
Mum and dad knew I wouldn’t be a psychopath just wanted me to be a solicitor. | Source
04.22.20 | elp debut is their best anyway | Pheromone
04.22.20 | 2 is my all time favourite album art. Great album too | Ryus
04.22.20 | try some fiber | ArsMoriendi
04.22.20 | 3 is good, but one of my least favorite Led Zeppelin records, it paved the way for better albums to come though
2 is amazing
Haven't heard the others and don't really care to | Casavir
04.22.20 | "the music sounded like a more agressive Metallica"
lmfao | butt.
04.22.20 | dammmnnnnn 5 hurt my soul. it's so much better than hell awaits, which might actually be my least fav of early slayer | EoinCofa
04.22.20 | @Pratman I hear what you’re saying.
I cannot digest a couple that are considered masterpieces by quite a few peeps:
Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
Neutral Milk Hotel - AOTS
Sufjan Stevens - Illinoise (this is the best one here, just not crazy about it)
Frank Ocean - Blond
My ears might be broken though | bigguytoo9
04.22.20 | I dont get the Frank Ocean album either, it was nothing special.
The Dead Can Dance album on this list though, I do love a lot. | JDubb
04.22.20 | Black Sabbath rules over Led Zep! 100% agreed. Archilerion, I am with u regarding Slayer. | facupm
04.22.20 | ill give you reign in blood, although its importance as influencie cant be denied | JohnnyoftheWell
04.22.20 | Golden Hour being considered a masterpiece has always been a meme started by people too chill to care about what makes a masterpiece and whose primary emotion is their frustratingly high level of serotonin tbh | charbyno
04.23.20 | I totally understand where you’re coming from. In terms of bands I have a hard time getting into Genesis. I love Yes, King Crimson, Pink Floyd, Camel, Rush and so on. All those bands have something that sticks out to me - whether it be Neil Peart’s drumming, Chris Squire’s bass etc. I understand how important and well respected Genesis are in the prog genre I just can’t get into them. Wish I could | Source
04.23.20 | doesn't get much better than gabriel genesis | JeremiahBullfrog
04.24.20 | hate hate hate ELP, the keyboards are hideous. Every christmas my dad brings out "trilogy" and plays it for like a month solid, which is ironic cause Greg Lake probs wrote the greatest Christmas song ever. | OllieS
04.24.20 | 5 is just bad | cylinder
04.25.20 | I agree on 2, I can barely take it seriously. So campy and melodramatic | Ryus
04.25.20 | 2 is far and away the best album on here | wham49
04.27.20 | totally agree with 1, Ace of spades I get too, personally I think Overkill and Bomber are better | Divaman
04.29.20 | I hear why people rate 1 and 3 very highly, and I agree with them. (But yeah, there is a lot of acoustic stuff on Zeppelin 3. I just happen to like it.) I've never listened to 2, but I probably should - it's another one I'd probably like. I've never had any interest in Motorhead, though, and the little bit of Slayer I've listened to hasn't interested me enough to listen to any more of them. | Divaman
04.29.20 | A couple of classics I feel that way about, though, are Tales of Topographic Oceans and A Passion Play. And while I'm a big progressive rock fan, I've never been able to get into most of Genesis either. | JustJoe.
04.29.20 | 5 masterpieces that give me indigestion | Boognish79
09.20.20 | I hear you on some of these. Zeppelin 3 is untouchable IMO. Reign In Blood probably seems like it’s no big deal looking at it from today’s standards. But in 1986 you have to understand how unprecedented that type of thrash metal was. It’s been copied so many times, it’s hard to understand how insane it was at that time. Seasons In The Abyss is my favorite Slayer album though.
| Groundking
09.20.20 | I find the Radiohead albums painfully boring. |
