Back from a Boris gig

Heavy Rocks

So I caught Boris live this weekend. And it's one of them truly "wow" experiences. I didn't really know what setlist they'd play - for all I could have known, they could've just done their last drone album in full. But I didn't really care - a band of this stature comes around to my neck of the woods only so often. (also, I was luckily smart enough to wear earplugs)

Heavy Rocks (2011)

From the first track, I could tell that the leopard pattern of the event design should've been a giveaway. They did tracks from all Heavy Rocks albums as far as I could tell. I don't know all of them by heart, but I remember being pretty cold on the new one when listening it at home. Turns out tracks of the new Heavy Rocks are fucking amazing live. A garage punk/rock band with the skills and experience they had is quite the show, especially when you usually listen to the simple amateur versions of the genre.

Heavy Rocks (2022)

I sweat like a pig because of how much energy they put out. Atsuo is a world class frontman in how he brought the audience into it. Bless him, he threw me a water bottle by the end (I was probably swimming in sweat by then). But before the closer, I thought all I had was a world class punk show. Then... then they played Aileron for the encore (Atsuo did that one on drums, he spent the rest as a frontman - and the only time I've seen a guy with silver glittering platform shoes crowdsurfing) and it is probably the best live music experience in my life. I still need to process it a bit, I think a bit of my soul left my body back then. A band that I'm truly grateful to have seen live and grateful that they do what they do.
