05.31.20 | To me, there is no doubt that Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath is the first Metal. Both song and album. Yeah, other and earlier bands (e.g. Led Zep) may have Incorporated those elements Into individual tracks; but they didn’t have the metal spirit. |
Meridiu5
05.31.20 | Imo Hendrix was first ie purple haze |
bobbydylan
05.31.20 | Helter Skelter was definitely an influence on the genre, along with Hendrix, Led Zep and others, but the first "true" metal songs are Black Sabbath's Self Titled album. |
ArsMoriendi
05.31.20 | I mean the term came from the 1968 song "Born to Be Wild" by Steppenwolf
Apparently a critic called it "heavy metal" because of the line:
"I like smoke and lightnin'
Heavy metal thunder
Racing with the wind
And the feeling that I'm under"
and the term caught on to describe heavier hard rock tracks before settling into its modern definition.
It was also released months before Helter Skelter was recorded, so it has Helter beat |
JDubb
05.31.20 | I have a hard time identifying Steppenwolf with metal, but I see your point. But this is first metal song, not first “heavy metal song”. Is there a subtle difference? metal is more encompassing, but perhaps less encompassing of early hard rock/heavy metal. |
JDubb
05.31.20 | Black Sabbath was metal - encompassing Various (e.g., doom, stoner, psychedelia, etc.) subgenres. |
ArsMoriendi
05.31.20 | "Heavy metal" is just what the original wave of metal was called
Like how "rock 'n' roll" got shortened to just "rock," and then eventually "rock 'n' roll" started to only mean the original 50s wave.
I'd say "heavy metal" vs "metal" functions similarly to "rock 'n' roll" vs "rock," but for the late 60s/early 70s, although of course it's not a perfect 1 to 1 |

06.02.20 | Born to Be Wild isn't really all that metal, even tho it is decently heavy. I'd argue that Helter Skelter is very heavy, but isn't quite metal as well. Like Ghandi said. |

06.02.20 | Nothing really solidly was considered metal anymore after Nickelback released their self-titled album in 1972. Music that was once considered metal was then reclassified as hard rock and alternative. Nickelback - Nickelback used harsh vox and guitar distortion in such a heavy way that it blew everything old back, and everything that came later was inspired by this musical advancement and achievement. A few years later, the song "Photograph" won musical achievement of the century for setting the benchmark for metal standards and influenced generations to come. |

06.03.20 | I can understand why some people think that Cromagnon is the first B. Metal,
and that other think that Elter Skelter is the first H. Metal.(Hard Rock?)
They Elter Skelter probably influence Tony Iommi in his guitar sound.
Cromagnon LP is missing the electric guitar to be label Metal.
Maybe, there is not only one first. Maybe, heavy metal is a symbiose of many source.
IMO, Tony is the first mega-beast of Metal. Fair game, resume, i think.
After, Dio came and popularized The Metal Horn gest. borrowed from his italian grandmother pointing at him, you gotta go to hell, she said. And, he turn the gesture, bang. m/

Tony never aknowledged the beattles as an influence. I'm not saying he didn't listen to these guys, he just never mentioned a song that influenced his music.
