| Black Folk metal ranked
I listened to a ton of black folk metal and I wanted to rank the albums in order of quality. One album per band, so the best album I've heard from each band is shown. | 34 | | Kampfar Mellom Skogkledde Aaser
Not much really makes this album very memorable. It’s good, but not great. | 33 | | Borknagar Borknagar
Somehow I didn’t get into this album too much. The members are also legendary, but I guess legends aren’t always at their top performance | 32 | | Horn Naturkraft
This is a super well rated album, but I don’t really get why. It’s not too consistent IMO, but maybe I just don’t “get” it. | 31 | | Cor Scorpii Monument
I really expected to like this album more since it’s basically Windir 2.0, but the feeling just isn’t the same. | 30 | | Thyrfing Thyrfing
Not much pops out when listening to this album. The playing and vocals are there, but it almost seems like you’ve heard the album before. | 29 | | Wolfchant A Pagan Storm
Like Thyrfing, this is just normal folk black played well. | 28 | | Manegarm Vredens Tid
Vredens has a very “fun” sound, but it just sounds too cheesy for me. | 27 | | Vintersorg Till Fjälls
There’s an experimental feel on this album that works at times, but other times it doesn’t fit quite well enough for me. | 26 | | Saor Forgotten Paths
I don’t really understand why Saor is one of the most popular Scottish folk black bands. Maybe I'm not a fan of Celtic folk music. | 25 | | Myrkgrav Trollskau, Skromt og Kolabrenning
Nothing is really too special with this album, but there’s not much wrong with it either. | 24 | | Ulver Bergtatt - Et eeventyr i 5 capitler
Nattens is a better album IMO, but this is still really good. It’s a bit too mellow for me though. | 23 | | Equilibrium Turis Fratyr
Equilibrium is really more power metal than anything, but It’s close enough to me. | 22 | | Enslaved Frost
I know this is a classic, but I also feel that the style has been done better and improved since it’s release. Frost is still a very strong release though | 21 | | Panopticon The Scars of Man on the Once Nameless Wilderness
Panopticon is possibly the biggest US black folk band, but I never understood why. I’m ranking this at this spot for Part 1, not part 2. | 20 | | Zgard Totem
A very obscure band, but the music surely isn’t the reason for that. | 19 | | Wodensthrone Curse
This is just normal folk black, but it’s done really well. | 18 | | Wyrd Huldrafolk
This is possibly the most raw sounding album on the list. There’s not much folk on it, but the riffs rule. | 17 | | Primordial The Gathering Wilderness
Primordial really do have a unique sound. It’s hard to describe, but it’s like progressive black with a sprinkling of folk. | 16 | | Falkenbach Ok Nefna Tysvar Ty
There’s less emphasis on the growling and a much greater emphasis on this original clean singing chant style. I definitely recommend. | 15 | | Fauna Avifauna
There’s a bit too much ambience for my liking, but the metal makes up for it. | 14 | | Falls of Rauros The Light That Dwells in Rotten Wood
I thought their newest album was supposed to be their best, but this one takes the cake for me. | 13 | | Volahn Aq Ab Al
Incredibly unique in the genre, Volahn actually focuses on Mexican heritage and uses Mexican folk music. Definitely check this one out | 12 | | Mithotyn In The Sign Of The Ravens
Imagine Hammerheart, but black metal and you have this album. It actually took some getting used to for me. | 11 | | October Falls The Womb of Primordial Nature
Some of the riffs on this album are incredible. There are only four tracks on this, but each one is amazing. | 10 | | Mistur Attende
While not quite as mind-blowing as some of the better ranked albums, this one has a phenomenal viking feel and some amazing songs. | 9 | | Arkona (RUS) Goi, Rode, Goi!
The female vocalist on this is incredible. She has beautiful cleans and powerful growls, all the while the instrumentals are great. | 8 | | Vehemence (FRA) Par le sang versé
AOTY right here. Melodic black and folk is a great combo | 7 | | Windir 1184
Many people say Likferd is best, but I found this album first so it has nostalgia for me. | 6 | | Empyrium Songs of Moors and Misty Fields
There’s such a feeling of sadness on this album it's stunning. The acoustic sections are equal caliber to the metal ones. | 5 | | Goatmoon Finnish Steel Storm
Regardless of your opinion on Blackgoat, the music on this rules hard | 4 | | Drudkh Blood In Our Wells
Drudkh are super consistent, but this is their masterpiece. Everything Drudkh does well is epitomized in this album. | 3 | | Forefather Steadfast
The viking feeling on this album is second to none, even though these guys aren't even Nordic. | 2 | | Nokturnal Mortum The Voice of Steel
Almost as good as Verisakeet, VOS is incredible and a masterclass on folk metal. | 1 | | Moonsorrow Verisäkeet
Easily the best album on the list. I can’t speak highly enough of this album. | |

12.01.19 | 2 is such a banger | blou52
12.01.19 | Agreed. Each track is incredible | BallsToTheWall
12.01.19 | Dope list and see Arkona live if you get the chance. | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | Epic list, disagree with 2 | budgie
12.01.19 | ugh vikings are so played out | Avagantamos
12.01.19 | I wonder what the black metal from other galaxies sounds like | blou52
12.01.19 | @BallsToTheWall I totally would, but I dont see them coming to the US too often.
@Avagantamos they probably use a theremin | BallsToTheWall
12.01.19 | Blou, I saw them in Tampa like 2 years ago. And I know they had a tour in the Us last year or so. Where you at man? | blou52
12.01.19 | I'm out by Chicago. Now that I think of it, maybe they played with Equilibrium or someone. I'm pretty sure I remember seeing their logo on the site of one of the venues around here | BallsToTheWall
12.01.19 | Stay aware and see them next time
They’re nearby. It’s a life-changing show. | garas
12.01.19 | This is so wrong. | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | Why tho
All of these rule apart from number 2 | garas
12.01.19 | My biggest problem is that Panopticon is lame, and is ranked above Bergtatt. And additionally the list is missing Isengard, Hades Almighty, Storm and Satyricon, which are among the best folk-black metal bands I know. | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | Satyricon and Hades Almighty suck hard
Panopticon aren't lame. Bergtatt should be much higher, agreed. | budgie
12.01.19 | wanted to make a mention of isengard and storm, but then sort of realized that folk black metal makes no fucking sense in the world.
cruachan? that's just neo celtic shit with black metal vocals and shitty guitars
finntroll? some black metal squashed together with polka and pagan aesthetics
folk black metal makes no sense to me
i think isengard is the closest thing ive heard to what folk black metal would actually sound like, rather than the stuff on this list that is just folk + black metal pushed together in inelegant hybridizations | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | You don't like moonsorrow?
Disgraceful | budgie
12.01.19 | i like plenty of bands that combine folky shit with black metal shit
but folk black metal as a term gives me a headache | garas
12.01.19 | "but folk black metal as a term gives me a headache" Just don't take it too seriously. For me any BM with quite lot folk parts and elements fits in this category.
"Satyricon and Hades Almighty suck hard"
( ͠° ͟ʖ ͠°) *angry* | budgie
12.01.19 | dark medieval times is one of the best bm albums evah | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | folking black metal
Dark medieval times rules and is the last good Satyricon album. It ain't folk tho | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | Now Diabolical is fucking trash | garas
12.01.19 | "Now Diabolical is fucking trash"
Wrong. And man, that is not even a folkish BM album... | blou52
12.01.19 | I knowingly didn't include any Satyricon since it doesnt seem like it fits in with the other albums on the list. Nemesis Divina would be either 5 or 6 if I included it. I suppose I could add Isengard, but you wouldn't be happy with the ranking for sure. I forgot about Storm | garas
12.01.19 | What's the matter with Isengard??? Anything Fenriz made is golden!
And yeah, it is pretty easy to forget about Storm (I blame the unlucky band name), but that one is also awesome. I also don't listen to that album that much as it deserves. | IAmScott
12.01.19 | Lot's of stuff I need to hear off of this. Great list! I'd personally put Primordial higher | blou52
12.01.19 | I don't have Storm rated so that's my excuse for forgetting it. It's been a while since I've heard it. Isengard just doesn't do anything for me. Fenriz got a raw sound, but I don't know if it really works well with the music. Hostmorke seems more like a demo than a complete idea.
also, any people saying there's too much viking stuff, like half the top 10 aren't viking related. Volahn especially is something to check out if you're tired of vikings. | TheSpirit
12.01.19 | Saor isn’t from the US? | frozencarl
12.01.19 | US = united scotland obviously | Pikazilla
12.01.19 | united senegal | budgie
12.01.19 | Utilitarian Sexrobots | Arditi
12.01.19 | Saor is Scottish, not American. | blou52
12.02.19 | You guys were wrong, I definitely meant upper Scotland. Either way I fixed the mistake.
@SwagLord Nemesis Divina is killer, but I never really considered it as folk. There aren't even any folk instruments on the album. Moors And Misty Fields is way more doom and folk than it is black, but it doesn't seem right to leave it off since its so good | oltnabrick
12.03.19 | the Myrkgrav album actually rules sweet ass tyvm | oltnabrick
12.03.19 | this genre is super hit or miss
never got the hype for moonsorrow at all | aydross121
12.03.19 | That Empyrium is really good, I need to listen to that neo-folk one again. | Bedex
01.15.20 | for the life of me I cannot get into 8 | TheClansman95
01.15.20 | jeez this list is gold | blou52
01.17.20 | I don't remember doing so, but i apparently have Ungfell saved on Spotify, so I must have liked them. Ill check them out. Turns out I'd already jammed Murg before as well | blou52
01.19.20 | That Ungfell album was pretty great. I wasn't a huge fan of the folk instrumental songs, but the metal riffs more than made up for it |
