Memorable Math (2019)
When I'm not refreshing the New Releases - Math Rock page every 5 seconds, I've been enjoying some good ol noodling of both light and heavy. 2019 was quite sporadic with releases (akin to the genre), but I figure that I highlight some of my favorites throughout this year! (Unordered) |
1 | | The Number Twelve Looks Like You Wild Gods
Mathcore
They're back! Despite kind of distancing themselves from their usual grind ever since the last decade, this shift into a more accessible light still holds up well. Even still, I would say that some of those frantic math-y elements are still present like on "Ruin the Smile" and "Tombos Wound" (Which were some of my favorites here). |
2 | | Alarmist Sequesterer
Math/Post
Soothing tunes of some uncommon instrumentation for math. The keys/electronics here really give this record a sort of identity that I adore quite a bit. "District of Baddies" as the opening track was quite a bold, yet effective start to the record might I add. "Bronntanasarus" is also a nice math-y tune as well. Makes for some good background music for work. |
3 | | Delta Sleep Younger Years
Math/Emo
Still, I have to finish this group's discography, but I'm digging what I'm hearing with this one. "Sofa Boy" is my top pick here with its distorted and wavy tunes and the vocals help greatly to accentuate that trait. "Constant Dreamer" is also a good one too. |
4 | | I Met a Yeti Yeti Camp
Math/Post Hardcore
Found this to be an interesting and fast-paced EP. The screams on a couple of the songs came as a surprise (despite knowing that it's hardcore), but it, in some way, added to the experience. The closing track "Cherry Blossom" is pretty energetic! |
5 | | Covet acoustics
Math/Prog
It's nice to hear some acoustic renditions that build off of the original song. "Shibuya" sounds great in a more down-to-earth and slower tempo than its original. I dunno, I probably have a soft spot for acoustic math rock. |
6 | | The Callous Daoboys Die On Mars
Mathcore
Hints of TDEP can be heard in this, and I don't find that to be a bad thing. They add their own spin to it with a much more whimsical vocal approach mixed with familiar mathcore chords. "Fake Dinosaur Bones" is a kickass track. |
7 | | Of Two Minds Natural Light
Math Rock
Discovered this group via Bandcamp, and it's quite a nice record. It has a couple of memorable riffs like in "Flatland" and the ambiance combined with somber plucks in "Something About Water" adds to the experience. |
8 | | Secret Band LP2
Mathcore
Either I'm jamming out to the frantic chords or reading the odd and raunchy lyrics, this record has effectively made me a fan of the band. "Upgrades" and "Lightning" were my top picks. Surprised the vocalist can pull off the screams throughout this record. |
9 | | BATS Alter Nature
Math/Post Hardcore
Did a bit of listening to this band's discography, and I can dig how "out there" their sound is. "Christian Science" and "Family Planning" are pretty fun tunes to jam out to. There's a lot of math-y chords in this one as well |
10 | | Lightning Bolt Sonic Citadel
Math/Noise
Akin to what SandwichBubble said, its a true wall of sound. The first track hits just like the name implies (Blow To The Head), and the rest of the record follows suit. It's starting to grow on me a bit, to be honest. |
11 | | Car Bomb Mordial
Math/Grind
This one was quite a hefty sounding record. Although I found it to be a slight step down from Meta, it still has a lot of memorable moments. "Dissect Yourself" is such an abrasive song that it's infectious, and there's also some hints of progressive elements mixed in as well (Vague Skies, Xoxoy) |
12 | | Yvette Young Piano EP
Math Rock
Still to this day, an enjoyable listen. It's like a story being told without words with some tempo changes to give it more of a natural and in-the-moment feel. "Captain" exemplifies the aforementioned statement well. "Jolt" is also a grower. |
13 | | Snooze Familiaris
Math/Emo
Another record that still holds up well. Its more on the heavier side of math, though I would say it helps with the passionate vocals. The various inclusions of instruments like on "Dig Doug" caught my attention especially, and the lyrical content was interesting as well. |
14 | | Hikes Mahal Kita
Math/Folk
The group still has it in them. Wasn't too crazy over the Lilt EP, but they definitely built off of the honey-sweet riffs very well here. The vocals also mixed nicely for the most part, with "been thinkin" being the best example of this. |
15 | | The Physics House Band Death Sequence
Math/Prog
Still can't get enough of this one and it's currently my Math AOTY. That sort of ominous sound adds to that odd nature of the style TPHB wanted to portray here. All three of the Death Sequences are worth listening to here. |
