02.20.21 | I thought 2020 was actually pretty decent for music but im a metal fan so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
Good list doe! Heard zero of these lol |
dedex
02.20.21 | Sweet to see Empty Country and Esoctrilihum
you put the wrong RTJ album tho! |
anat
02.20.21 | i like everything that i've heard on this list, except 31 which did nothing for me in the slightest |

02.20.21 | 'you put the wrong RTJ album tho!'
good spot dedex, was down as 'Rtj4' |

02.20.21 | anatelier - well, I agree 31 is definitely their weakest but I still liked it a fair bit |
DadKungFu
02.20.21 | Bill Callahan's 2nd worst album of his career was still one of the better albums of 2020 agreed |
zakalwe
02.20.21 | That Sam Lee album was a parting gift from you doof lad. Love it. |
DoofDoof
02.20.21 | The Sam Lee was another anatelier find zak, but the best folk album in ages |
theBoneyKing
02.20.21 | Old news for the RYM crew ;-P
Still a great list for a not-so-great year.
I didn’t connect with 1 a ton, good stuff but a bit musty, for lack of a better word.
Never did get on the Sam Lee. |
DoofDoof
02.20.21 | DadKungFu - the Callahan was nowhere near as good as the previous one but still had 5 or 6 really great tunes on it...and that was enough for a top 10 placing yup, hmmm |
Rolling Girl
02.20.21 | Some interesting stuff on here. Will check. |
AsleepInTheBack
02.20.21 | Surprised (but happy) to see 15 here. Didn't think Lenker would be particularly doofcore. |
DoofDoof
02.20.21 | AsleepInTheBack - Big Thief got a top 25 album of the decade for me so they're pretty strong doofcore
Definitely my favourite of her solo albums though |
AsleepInTheBack
02.20.21 | Ye it's her best for sure. The instrumental record is fairly enjoyable too.
I've yet to hear Big Thief, bizarrely. |
XyphDryne
02.20.21 | Wenn du Autechre hörst, kannst du so doof nicht sein. |
Gyromania
02.20.21 | Nice to see you dug ellengaest, tangram, all thoughts fly, and lamentations. Haven't heard your #1 but magic oneohtrix is up there for me too |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.20.21 | Great year for music, just depends what kind. Solo artists and producers etc had exponentially more time on their hands to make tunes. Bands on the other hand couldn't get together to write. All a matter of perspective and, of course, defined by individual tastes and discoveries. I always think its silly when people muse about a year being "not good for music" as if there could ever possibly be a grain of objectivity to the sentiment. Unless of course you mean its not a good year for music performance wise in which case that is entirely indisputable lol.
Anyways, I like a few of these, we don't have much cross over this year. |
Gyromania
02.20.21 | I always refrain from saying it was a bad/mediocre year for music because 90% of the time I end up finding some of my favourite releases years down the road. I've already discovered some awesome 2020 stuff in 2021 |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.20.21 | Yeah, your insight into the year will always be limited by a vast myriad of factors. There are multitudes of great releases every year, sometimes you just don't find them for any number of reasons |
Sunnyvale
02.20.21 | Great list! Happy to see Jonathan Wilson on here, and Destroyer ranked so high. Both albums rule |
neekafat
02.20.21 | 73 is v underrated. I need to put my list up soon already |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.20.21 | pretty sure sowing already posted his so we good |
theBoneyKing
02.20.21 | I mean I think it’s fairly implied that when one says “X was not a great year for music” that really just means “I didn’t find too much I enjoyed relative to other years.” Pretty much every statement about music is subjective in that way. |
Lord(e)Po)))ts
02.20.21 | no this is the internet and everyone is an expert |
hel9000
02.20.21 | Oh shit I forgot about that Sam Prekop. Nice list. |
Lucman
02.20.21 | 1 is amazing. Good stuff, Doof. |
MyNameIsPencil
02.21.21 | wait bright eyes released a new album last year? strange i missed it but it doesn't bode well for it's quality lol |
JohnnyoftheWell
02.21.21 | "not a great year for music” can mean 1) I failed to find the great albums that every year invariably dishes out to some extent, or 2) a particularly large proportion of the albums literally everyone heard were lame
2020 was p solid on both counts tbh |
GhandhiLion
02.21.21 | 2020 was amazing |
Winesburgohio
02.21.21 | 23!!! |
DoofDoof
02.21.21 | As Boney said, I’m just saying that for me not the strongest year - and an admission that I don’t count this as one of the stronger top 100 lists I’ve put up in recent years.
Definitely wasn’t through a lack of trying, think I listened to more newly released albums last year than ever before. Definitely think covid slowed things down a few months for a lot of artists out there.
I did have a bad year with mainstream popular stuff I guess. The Fiona Apple in particular I didn’t think was bad but not my thing in the end despite giving it about five listens or so. Yves Tumor I found disappointing but still RYM top 20, a lot of people liked it a lot. In fact looking at their top 30 a very average Strokes album made the cut :/ |
DoofDoof
02.21.21 | I saw you 5’d the Tunng Lucman good work, think it’s one of those albums if it catches you it’s near perfect |
DoofDoof
02.21.21 | Pencil - the Bright Eyes was by the numbers mostly but finished so strong that alone raised it a .5 on the rating |
