Season 3: Sharkattacks Continental Rec Tournament

Am I really doing this again? Goddamn it. So yeah the way it works is we play six rounds and in each round you rec me an album from a continent I choose (skipping Antarctica cuz duh). Whoever recs me the worst album gets eliminated. Ill be flexible about contestants this time around to adjust for the game and whatnot or incase anyone wants to join late. So first things first let’s start the game in familiar and flailing North America!
1The Notorious B.I.G.
Ready to Die

Here’s a hint about what I like to help you along your way.
2Shahmen
All in the Circle

Instantly likeable with its dark atmosphere and varied instrumentation. I was sold within like 12 seconds. Dude has a great deep voice that just makes everything sound like rumbling groovy force. I like how he’ll just repeat refrains and just pound lines in your ears. It helps that the bars sound as menacing as they are catchy. The short duration works in this albums favor and you can just let it play over for about an hour or so and it’s fine. Nice little album dude I’m gonna be jamming this one for awhile.

3Big Pun
Capital Punishment

Rec’d by someone

Big Pun is pretty dope. I’ve heard him on guest tracks before but never jammed a whole album. His flow is basically undeniable and words just pour out of him. He’s a great clearly a fantastic rapper with a almost masterful grasp on his craft. If only the actual album was the same. This thing is all over the place and contains a very common complaint among hip hop records: too many goddamn skits. Still there’s way more good than bad so it doesn’t destroy Big Puns talent or charisma ... just keep that finger near the skip button on this one. You’re still going to have a lot of fun listening to this you just have to roll with the punches sometimes.

I can see why you thought this was cheating because this is really good haha. Essentially it explodes right out the gate and somehow maintains that quality almost the entire time. I can always appreciate music that can get you to move your ass or smash shit or whatever it wants to achieve but also make you think. Yeah it sounds dumb and like a bunch of fucking stupid pseudo-philosophical bullshit or something like that lol. But music that can do that and pull it off well always kicks my ass hard. This doesn’t quite reach that impossible bar that only a few have done (Public Enemy, Funkadelic, Fugazi etc) but that’s doesn’t mean it stil isn’t the goddamn shit! EL-P isn’t my favorite rapper by a long shot but I think he does the beats? The beats are great I just don’t love him as an MC.

The Infamous

Rec’d by bloodshy

So here I am having a great time with this record and then I hear the unmistakable voice of Nas and I’m like oh sick yeah this sounds really good and he sounds really good with them and then fucking Raekwon shows up and then I’m like oh shit! And then I’m like wait how have I never heard this? Back in the day this would have blended nicely with the rest of the shit my old crew would bump. This is just perfect. All the guest spots are great. All the beats are great. Not a single bad song. It all just sits on top of minimalism and a grimy realness that can almost make you feel like you’re in a movie. As weird as that irony may seem.

6The Good Rats
Tasty

Rec’d by divaman

This, like a lot of your recs Diva, has a very strong potential to be hit or miss just by its very nature and my shitty taste in music. This kind of music can really turn me off but somehow you are able to surprise me sometimes and make me learn a little something about myself. The title is perfect, this is so fucking tasty. The riffs, the harmonies, the solos, it’s all just so solid and that it’s hard not to like after awhile. I can’t get Injun Joe out my head. While still not generally in my style so I could truly never completely fall for this album I still think it’s a stellar record and a nice one to keep in my back pocket in the future.

Very smooth but not without a few sharp edges lurking in the dark corners. Pretty successfully covers a lot of ground in both the lyrics and music department. I don’t think I’ve ever listened to either of these rappers but that’ll probably have to change. Nothing on here really blew me away although the Slick Rick homage probably added a few more decimal points to the score. It’s really good and maintains a consistent and steady quality for the most part but never quite reaches a crazy height or had anything that made me turn my head. My head was however, nodding along every time I played this.

Freedom Flight

Rec’d by arsmoriendi

Yeah this is right up my alley. Funky and groovy and all the things that go along with great funk records. Not groundbreaking necessarily but it’s just another solid funk record jam when you’ve run out of other shit. I feel like you have a cool mom? I don’t know random shot in the dark. I’m less into this when it sits more on the bluesy side of things but it’s still not ever bad or anything. Yeah safe pick for this tournament but cool another great album to add to the collection.

American Love Call

Rec’d by trifolium

Wasn’t really feeling this at first. Haven’t ever got into much soul as I did funk and I just about despise RnB. The more I listen to it the more I’m sold on this. It’s a steady little ship that doesn’t care what’s going on, it’s just going to ride that soul river til it’s dry. And sure maybe there’s been a few droughts and the waters getting swampy and you sure as shit can’t swim in it anymore. But this band sound like the studied the fuck out of the river and know every bend and when every wave will break. That’s what did it for me. I can really appreciate workmanship and effort and especially dedication. You got that and you got more than most.

Can’t really go wrong with X and you lucked out in that I hadn’t heard this for some reason. It sounds like the other X records I’ve heard. They’re a great band. They don’t throw a lot of curveballs but there’s a few in their rotation. Every now and then they add in a saxophone solo or drop an N-bomb but they mostly just do what they do and it’s really good for the most part. I get a little tired of their vocal harmonies but they sound weird on their own so it’s like I don’t know haha. Good pick.

POWER

Rec’d by Uzumaki

I like this. I do. But like in a weird way. I feel like there’s a lot of potential here but the band sounds sort of... restrained or something? The first couple tracks sound like they took a million takes each to record. I don’t know if that’s because the drummer was like too hype or something and want them to calm down or maybe they’re just like lazy or something and that’s just how they play? Probably not either of those and another thing entirely but either way something just feels off. Can’t describe it well but it’s there man I’m telling you. Lol. I probably sound like an idiot but that’s how I feel. That being said the strengths this album does have are undeniable. The chicks voice obviously. When the band isn’t lost in some weird stupefying straight jacket they can really play and sound really connected with each other. Those distorted funky bass lines are so fucking tasty. Short-winded in a really wonderful way that makes you want to come back.

Prepare Thyself to Deal With a Miracle

Rec’d by minushman

I honestly don’t really have the words to describe this album other than it’s jazz(?), it’s weird, I love it, and it may have changed my opinion on flute. I always thought flute was dogshit instrument but it features on here heavily and for some reason I’m digging it. Hard.

On paper this should be pretty cool. Elements of hip hop with lots of simple grooves and a vague sense of punk ethos and general fuck you nature to it. Plenty of attitude and a sort of in your face quality right from the get go. I can’t help but feel stupid listening to it though. The rhyming is worse than Licensed to Ill era Beastie Boys and the music is just too mind numbingly simple I just couldn’t even bring myself to listen to this more than 3 times. Some of the the piano lines are cool here and there but the two vocals are both terrible and the music is just too boring.

Spiral Walls Containing Autumns Of Light

Rec’d by dedex

This album covers more ground than a lot of bands do in a discography. It’s pretty crazy and not in the way people use it like “oh I saw a car accident the other day.” “Wow that’s so crazy!” Like this actual sounds insane at times. Possibly schizophrenic? I don’t know what that word means and probably shouldn’t be throwing it around but like it’ll go from funk to hip hop to blues rock to proto-death grips type shit and a bunch other stuff. It’s hard to keep track and it’s hard to really pin down. Also it’s just so long and so much to take in. With all these things going on, a lot of them I would probably think were flaws in a different case, I can’t help but enjoy the shit out this. It keeps me on my toes even after multiple listens. Truly unique. Can’t think of really anything like this. I do 0% research in these contests. I like to just let the recs speak for themselves. But goddamn I want to learn some shit about this haha.

I’ll be honest I already came into this sort of biased. I’m sorry. I just think you know there’s a lot of rappers. A lot of really good rappers. Even a few great ones! Hip hop has produced a lot of great albums in music history some I would consider possibly the best albums of all time. DMX at least for me might not even crack a top 100 Best Rappers Of All Tine list. At least not before I heard this. Now he might be somewhere in the 80’s or 90’s? He has a lot of charisma and great energy. His style is pretty much his own and for that he gets a lot of props. I just don’t know why out of so many great possibly choices out there... out of all the amazing rappers and albums you’d go with this. There was bound to be some classic I just hadn’t heard yet. Not gonna lie though it was a lot better than I expected. If everybody else’s recs weren’t so good this may have passed. Sorry my guy.
