Round 2: Season 2 Continental Rec Tournament

Alright Round 1 is over. Sorry LOVEANDACCEPTANCE but someone had to go. and congrats to Slothcore Sam reccing an absolute gem of a record. I wanted to write more about that album but honestly my shitty words don't really do it justice so just listen for yourseves. Next stop is North America where yours truly hails from.
1Beastie Boys
Ill Communication

This rounds hint is the Beastie Boys one of my favorite bands. you don't need to pick a hip hop record but I feel like most of this tournament is going to be rock and roll based so since we are in the continent that invented hip hop you might as well try and get one in.

Divaman

Diva... diva ... di...va... why...???? Why would you think I would like this? I even gave you a hint goddamnit! Ok i really tried to like this I really did but all I can think while this is playing is “Damn, this sounds a lot like a montage in a Disney movie.” It’s all so fucking slick and nice and pulls absolutely no punches. The first three songs are some the of the most happy go lucky it’ll all turn out great bullshit I’ve heard in awhile. It does get better after that but not by much. I know you are a big alternative/poprock guy but I don’t know how you can sit through this. I could almost get into the song “hero” but not quite. Sorry divaguy.

Slothcoressam

Sloth slapping out two home runs in a row with this guy. This album is hilarious and actually had me lol a few times. Songs like “you can’t tell me shit” and “pistol Dave” and “Shin Splints” are super fresh and funny. Production is ridiculously ambitious and varied but doesn’t sound rushed or out of place ever. The two rappers are witty and both have a way with words. They complement each other very well in a lyrical and vocal sense. This album blows by and very rarely feels dull, undercooked, or imprecise. Fun but thoughtful,

Drifter

The production on this thing is absolutely insane. Everything sounds so clear but murky. It’s very dark but beautiful. The synth in particular is mind blowing. The MC is also very good. His style and delivery are very unique. I know I have heard this guy before on other records as he sticks out like a sore thumb. No one really sounds like this guy and even though his subject matter isn’t exactly the most multi-dimensional in the hip hop universe he more than makes up for it with an impeccable flow, clever rhymes, and pure focused personality. This coupled with amazing production produce a fantastic experience.

Papa Universe

Damn this thing has atmosphere out the ass! You can totally get lost in his records vibe and feel. It’s druggy and mysterious but it sounds very bright and hifi without sounding glossy. Lyrically the record takes a backseat to the wonderful instrumentals but that doesn’t mean they aren’t great. Actually he lyrics speak about many subjects you don’t normally hear in hip hop with songs about Middle East history and the colonialism going on there. There is a lot to the lyrics and you can definitely read into them a lot. It’s still extremely modern in approach and doesn’t sound like a history lesson. Honestly another great record with super good production. The choruses on here are catchy in a weird way. They enter your psyche and plant a seed.

Sandwichbubble

So besides diva I get three excellent hip hop records and what does sandwich think is a good idea for a rec? A fucking folk album! That’s a huge risk you’re taking there guy but did it pay off? Well, when you have songwriting this good, a one of a kind voice and beautiful melancholic instrumentals... then yeah uh I guess it worked out pretty good. While it does go on a little long this album just feels like one of those lost classics. It could be really popular in the country/folk scene I have no idea but it should be if it’s not. Honesty and a certain realness are all over the sound. Not a single bad track to be found here.
