Season 2 Sharkattacks Continental rec tournament

Did this about a year ago and found a lot of good albums so we’re are going to do a second round. Sandwichbubble was last years winner so let’s see if he can repeat. Also this list Is somewhat meant to bring butcherboy out of retirement. Ok so same rules as last: I’ll accept 12 participants and eliminate 2 recs per round. You must pick an album from the continent I choose. I’ll give you a hint of what i like from each continent to go off of. If you win the round you get .1 added to your score.

The first round will be Europe! Lots of good music has come out here over the years. I’ve beeb listening to a lot of Siouxsie and post-punk in general so keep that in mind when reccing.

Well this is heavy as fuck... lots of anger, lots of technical ability, but is it any good? Fuck if I know? I’ve heard this record at least a half dozen times and I don’t really get it. Its fairly generic as far as my knowledge of metal goes. I don’t know know a whole lot about metal but this seemed like it wasnt breaking any new ground. It goes from fast technical metal riffs to slowed down breakdowns in basically every song. It’s not really that cool the first time and it’s not that cool the 53rd time either. Impressive but boring. I like the anger though and at one point the singer literally hocks a lugie which is pretty cool.. but like not that cool. It’s pissed as fuck and that’s great but my hint is a seminal post-punk record and you recced a metal album so you are doomed guy.

This is VERY post-punk. Like the epitome of the genre in one record. Tom-tom based drums, experimental yet simple music, Slightly-more-tuneful-than-punk vocals, danceable but quirky rhythms, and a fucking intensity that cant be denied. I really like this record though because even if it sounds like a post-punk record it sounds like the quintessential post-punk record that you need to hear. Honestly i am surprised I never heard or heard of this. It is truly amazing and stood out to me more than a lot of other "essential listening" under the punk, post-punk, goth, what have you umbrella. The percussion and synth work on "No More Blood and Soil" is so tasteful and beautiful. Pretty abrasive and unrelenting but not too much so. There is a lot to peel back on this record. Can't wait to unravel its layers.

So yeah when that guitar hits that sick minor chord within the first 8 seconds I was sold. This record fucking slays. Can’t really find a fault with it. It’s funky, trippy and catchy all at the same time.

Drifter

I was surprised at how much I actually liked this record. Scotland hasn't exactly been my favorite place for music. Almost everything I've heard sounds really sad and indie rock based. This record isn't any different. But what does make this record stand out from other depressing Scot rock is it comes off as honest and earnest which helps the band a lot. This record is full of absolutely gorgeous guitar tones and beautiful melodies. The guitars are superbly produced and well-played throughout the runtime and it just seems really Scotland-y. The drummer really keeps the record flowing though and brings a lot of muscle to the band. This is fortunate because a basic indie rock drummer would bring this record way down. Although a little much emotionally and somewhat embarrassing to listen to in public i actually liked it way more than i should. The fact that this is their debut is very impressive. You get to see another round drifter.

More on the punk side than post-punk in my opinion. Which is fine it's just pretty slow haha. Punk has almost always been known as a fast and energetic genre compared to most other genres. This has the energy but absolutely no speed. At first this put me off but the more I listen to this I like it. The midtempo pace actually makes this stand out more as a unique work of art rather than going with the tried and true punk formulas. The keyboard player makes a lot of eerie sounding shit, the bass and drums really hold it down, and the guitar player is subtle but interesting most of the time like on "Thirsty." However, the singer doesn't bring a lot to the table. I do like his lyrics a they are poetic and meaningful (when sung is English) but his melodies aren't too great and he doesn't exactly bring a whole bunch of diversity to his vocals. Overall pretty good once you let the sound wash over you.

This was better than I expected. Come on Eileen is a great song but almost every song is about of that quality. I liked the opener, the waltz number, plan B and the transition into I'll show you. It is mostly pretty good and catchy throughout but it is also fairly unique for a pop record. I like the vocals and their high-pitched style and when the vocals start getting more wild and loose I get really into it, although this is somewhat rare on he record as everything stays pretty composed and neat the whole time. The plethora of instruments adds a lot to the unique sound of pop, soul, folk, rnb whatever genres these guys pull out. Not bad Diva, not bad.
