Round 5: Sharkattacks Continental Rec Tournament

We are off to the biggest and most populated continent this round... Asia! Home of the weird, the intelligent, and good food. With only 4 contestants left we should be getting the cream of the crop here. Everyone except butcherboy has .1 handicaps and with only 2 rounds left I suggest you guys use em!

Teeny Shiny

I know there are a slew of Japanese punk bands and what not. You probably won’t go wrong with this choice. I’m not super knowledgeable about this continent so hopefully I learn something.

.1 HANDICAP USED

This is what I was looking for on this round! Damn the band is insane. The drums are fast and tight but versatile. The bass is melodic as fuck but rhythmically perfect with the drums. Guitar somehow acts as an anchor for the ever shifting band. That’s not to say the guitarist is a slouch though. His chords and rhythmic inflections add tons of layer and depth which results in many repeat listens. Despite all the amazing musicianship displayed throughout the runtime the vocalist still steals the show somehow. He can sream and yell and sing and squawk and just about anything to in between. The songs constantly kick my ass in one way or another. Every member brings it and the song structures are linear and progressive. Have another handicap point

.1 HANDICAP USED

I am actually a little disappointed in you papa. Although I was feeling this album pretty hard at first, it grew off me just as fast. I dig the overall sound and the band is well-rehearsed and on their shit. The vocals aren’t awful but they don’t make me feel much. The songs are also a little hit or miss. I like the stylistic changes band the genre switches. Production pisses me off though. I feel like they don’t do this band justice at some parts and then others I feel like it makes the band sound better than they actually are. I like it but I wish I liked it more. By far your worst rec papa and I’m sorry but I gotta do it.

For an ambient album this thing is busy as fuck! I totally love this album. It has minimalistic layers that all complement each other in trancey states of glory. You can either get lost in the sound of the album by yourself or play it as background noise for most occasions. This album is extremely chill and relaxing but there are plenty of subtle melodies and atmosphere. Each song has a particular character and mood/feeling. It’s distinctive and that is very hard to come by with this kind of music. The songs all have a tribal feel to them in a sort of drone but danceable feel. Somehow despite the particular style they employ each song feels unique. Honestly this album slays. I didn’t want to like it. I felt like scoffing it off at first but the quality of this record is much too high to ignore.

This is such a great record. It goes from alternative pop to noisy nightmares, half the time in the same song. I got really into this record. There is a lot of personality that oozes of each song. The track list flows really well with a definite flow to the arrangement. The songs themselves can take left turns and loud fucking detours into weird backroads of strange structures and sounds. One second you feel claustrophobic and trapped in nervous energy and the next you are enjoying a sunny afternoon. The happy parts sound edgy though. There is a deep understanding that the pleasant moments aren’t forever and darkness is coming. But when he cold noisy parts come, there is also a certain optimistic feeling within each crank, squeal, and shriek. There is a light at the end of every tunnel... but you still got to go through some tunnels now and then. I thoroughly enjoyed this album but the competition was too stacked my friend.
