CaliggyJack
03.06.21 | Metallica sold out on their s/t
It's an amazing album but it was definitely intended for commerciability |
JDubb
03.07.21 | I don’t disagree on the Black Album. Question is which was the greater sellout. |
CaliggyJack
03.07.21 | Ok sure but I thought we were talking about the album where they sold out, not which one had the bigger sell out. My bad |
Space Jester
03.07.21 | There are mostly bands that were already appealing to the mainstream so I don’t see how they’re good examples |
Space Jester
03.07.21 | Like how is Godsmack only now selling out lol |
Allergist
03.07.21 | 4 is good tho, it's easily their best and most natural album past AJFA. I'd rather jam good hard rock than shitty bland uninspired 2000's "thrash" |
evilford
03.07.21 | Yeah you can't sell out if you had no artistic integrity to begin with |
JDubb
03.07.21 | True on Godsmack, but album 17 was even more of a step on mainstreaming their sound. |
JDubb
03.07.21 | I feel that Load was a more intentful sellout than the Black Album. Example: hair cuts and eyeliner. |
ReiniEden
03.07.21 | First one is pretty good tho |
rockarollacola
03.07.21 | Aerosmith sold out on Permanent Vacation when they hired Bruce Fairbairn as producer. That's when Aerosmith the brand replaced Aerosmith the band IMO. Still kinda have a soft spot for Nine Lives tho |
fogza
03.07.21 | Where is Coldplay, X and Y? |
ReturnToRock
03.07.21 | Not sure how 6 and 13 apply, they're just evolutions on the bands' previous sounds. Limp Bizkit should have Results May Vary, and Offspring should have Splinter.
Anyway:
Def Leppard - Hysteria (NWOBHM to hair metal)
Def Leppard - X (hair metal to pop rock)
Blink-182 - S/T
Aerosmith - Permanent Vacation (blues rock to hair metal)
Aerosmith - Just Push Play (hard rock to pop/rock)
KISS - Dynasty (hard rock to disco)
KISS - Lick It Up (hard rock to hair metal)
KISS - Carnival of Souls (hard rock to pseudo-grunge)
The Offspring - Splinter
Green Day - American Idiot
Still Remains - The Serpent
Bon Jovi - Crush
Judas Priest - Turbo
Lacuna Coil - Shallow Life
Nightwish - Once
Megadeth - Youthanasia (thrash metal to heavy rock)
Megadeth - Risk (heavy rock to pop/rock)
Slipknot - Vol. 3
Papa Roach - Lovehatetragedy
30 Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie
Fall Out Boy - Infinity on High
Sulpher - No One Will Ever Know (industrial to hair metal - yes really!)
The Clash - Cut The Crap
Metallica - S/T (progressive thrash to heavy rock)
Metallica - St Anger (heavy rock to alt-metal)
Slayer - God Hates Us All
Buckcherry - 15
Trivium - The Crusade
Paradise Lost - Host
Moonspell - Darkness and Hope |
MyNameIsPencil
03.07.21 | I'd argue Morning View was more of Incubus's "sell out album" but to each their own |
JDubb
03.07.21 | ReturntoRock, Excellent list. I don’t disagree that Trivium - The Crusade was a sellout. But some noted above (e.g., Nightwish - Once) were more of a musical shift (some for the better). I love Slipknot - Vol. 3; I can see where, compared to Iowa, some may see that as a sellout. |
ReturnToRock
03.07.21 | Oh, many of the albums on my list are actually decent to excellent (that's my favourite Trivium, just for starters). They just represent turns for the commercial, so they fit the theme. |
rockarollacola
03.08.21 | I don't think Hysteria is all that different stylistically from Pyromania. I can see the shift between High n Dry and Pyromania, but not Pyromania to Hysteria. |
Supercoolguy64
03.08.21 | to be fair make yourself is when incubus pretty much dropped all the funk completely and started going for that radio rock sound |
iambandersnatch
03.08.21 | I'd argue make yourself isn't all that sellout, it has 1-2 somewhat radio friendly songs and the rest aren't. I think this list is confusing "changing your sound" with "selling out". In some cases when a band is changing their sound they are doing so for the sake of selling out, but not always.
"to be fair make yourself is when incubus pretty much dropped all the funk completely and started going for that radio rock sound" they went from heavy funk to still having some funk infused with other things, they didn't drop it completely until much later. I don't know what "radio rock sound" you're talking about but I can't think of any band or sound they were even remotely copying, that era incubus sounded extremely unique. Obviously they are trash now but you have to give them credit for the shit they put out on their first few albums |
JDubb
03.08.21 | As a big fan of both Enjoy Incubus and SCIENCE; Incubus dropped a lot of their early sound on Make Yourself. stylistic changes, maybe. But to me, it was selling out for more popularity. |
ReturnToRock
03.08.21 | Make Yourself is the sellout.
Morning View is the confirmation.
Like, MY is Incubus' Californication/Load and MV is the By The Way/Re-Load.
Also re: Def Leppard, my bad. I keep thinking Pyromania is after Hysteria, not before. Hysteria is when they went OTT and overproduced though, so it's arguably the bigger sellout of the two. |
Trebor.
03.08.21 | Americana only good album on here |

JDubb
03.09.21 | You hit it on the head with MY and MV. Good call on Machine Head - Supercharger; that album sucks hard |

08.16.21 | Yeah, SWANSONG was the first album I thought of when I saw this list posting. |
