Nu-Metal Era Albums that Broke the Mold

In 1996, when I first heard Korn (Sean Olson) and Deftones (Teething) on the Crow: City of Angels soundtrack, I was hooked! These two bands had a jaw-dropping sound, which I had never heard before, and defined the blueprint for Nu-Metal. And for a while there, Nu-Metal was awe inspiring, with several bands incorporating sounds from multiple genres and cultures, pulling in DJs and turntables, and weaving in hip-hop beats and worldly grooves. As the late 1990's faded into the 2000's; it quickly became apparent that this genre was falling under it's own weight. "Derivative" became a word that was more and more associated with the original and new Nu-Metal bands (as well as other bands that happened to fall within this period of time). By 2004 or so, it seemed that Nu-Metal had run its course. However, there were a few Nu-Metal Era bands that broke the mold (at least for one album within their portfolio), and incorporated progressive and/or world textures into their sound. Or simply had a sound that defied categorization. This list serves to identify my top 13 albums by such bands.
