| Some pretty nice releases from 2018
Albums that make my brain do the Michael Rosen 'nice' thing. | 1 | | Courtney Barnett Tell Me How You Really Feel
A bit of progression from her first record, TMHYRF is packed full of catchy hooks, satisfyingly honest lyrics and mellow moments, even delving into some more aggressive, punky territory. | 2 | | Vein Errorzone
The sonic equivalent of being skullf*cked by a raspberry pi, Vein's blend of mathy metalcore with some more simplistic and animalistic hardcore violence makes a strong debut, heavy on the 90s influences too. | 3 | | Jesus Piece Only Self
About as heavy as an anvil made out of thousands of smaller anvils, a fairly bog-standard front end leads into a truly brutal second half, as the death-metal-y hardcore crew hone their brand of oppressive beatdown. | 4 | | Tiny Moving Parts Swell
A really nice record - mathy, pop-punk-y, and midwest emo-y, it's nothing especially special, but heartfelt lyricism and catchy choruses can take simplicity a long way. | 5 | | IDLES Joy as an Act of Resistance
At the time of writing this it's not out yet, but it's still going to end up as the best punk record of the year, because that's just IDLES' thing - being really angry, very british, and very, very good. | 6 | | Trash Boat Crown Shyness
Take Chuck-era Sum 41, give them a less irritating vocalist, put some truly immense choruses in there and lyricism to rival any pop-punk band out there, and you get Crown Shyness. Oh, and don't forget breakdowns. Trashy B LOVE to pretend they're a hardcore band. | 7 | | Rough Hands Mortal Terror
It's weird, it's loud, and the guitar tone sounds like Rough Hands trapped an alien in the recording booth. Some cool alt-hardcore that shows there's more to experimenting with the 90s than Code Orange want you to think. | 8 | | Don Broco Technology
Take the last BMTH album, add a hefty slice of tongue-in-cheek fuckboy bravado, and you get Technology. Sure, it's no Kid A, but it's a fun rock record with some surprisingly punchy riffing on it. | 9 | | Trail of Lies W.A.R.
Some straight edge vegans get very angry with guitars and stuff. It's good. Nothing new, but it's good. | 10 | | Power Trip Opening Fire: 2008-2014
Some B-sides, rarities and compilation tracks from everyone's favourite new thrash band. It's pretty interesting, especially seeing as the band have progressed so much since their beginnings. Plus it's got a Prong cover. Which is cool. | 11 | | Turnstile Time and Space
Sure it's not the psychedelic hardcore masterpiece it was built up to be, but Time and Space is one of the best HC records to come out this year. Fun, aggressive, and a little weird in places, the band continue to show a lot of promise. | 12 | | Culture Abuse Bay Dream
The midpoint of Angel Du$t and WAVVES, Culture Abuse's new record is a lot more chilled out than their debut, but it's packed full of surefire summer bops. There's a song about being nice to bees too, which I'm sure Jerry Seinfeld appreciates | |
