| 2011 | 1 | | Insomnium One for Sorrow
Another phenomenal atomspheric piece of art. Their ability to, time and time again, draw me in completely and evoke such an amazing storm of emotions, and do it so effortlessly, is something that never ceases to amaze me. | 2 | | Dream Theater A Dramatic Turn of Events
Dream Theater's first album without Mike Portnoy is actually pretty good. It contains 3 somewhat mediocre ballads, but also 6 prog epics which are all great. It's a little hit or miss, but the worst is not all that bad, and the best is really amazing.
If all of their subsequent albums managed to keep up with this level of writing, it would have been a proof that DT can definitely prosper even without Portnoy - but sadly this is not that case. | 3 | | Haken Visions
Outstanding. I was mesmerized all the way through. Almost everything works in this underrated album. Easily one of the best this year. | 4 | | Anthrax Worship Music
Time was not kind for this album sadly. In 2011 this was one of the biggest events of the year - a triumphant comeback album from one of the most influential and beloved bands, reforming with an (almost) classic line-up, coming back to their thrash metal roots while maintaining a modern and sober approach to develop a unique sound so many of us metalheads didn't know we missed. Listening to this now though is a different story - this album does not work as much right now, and it mostly feels like a foundation on which be band will march on forwards. Without Worship Music we wouldn't have modern Anthrax, and we wouldn't have For All Kings, which is a much more refined, tighter album than this, and it really is not a bad album on its own. But I just can't say it really intrigued me all that much. This is a great "tech demo", but not as great album on its own sadly. | 5 | | Machine Head Unto the Locust
Another excellent album by Mechine Head. Following up a masterpiece like The Blackening can be a herculean task, but Unto the Locust fares pretty well. It's more on the melodic, approachable side this time, maintaining a delicate balance between staying true to all the great things the band has done in The Blackening, while still having its own identity, enabling it to stand on its own. It's a joy from beginning to end and overall just a fantastic time - really great album. | 6 | | Foo Fighters Wasting Light
This is easily their best album. Foo Fighters are a "greatest hits" kind of band, every album has its fair share of hits which are all great songs, but all other songs are just boring filler. Well this is probably the only exception in their whole career, as even the fillers are pretty good in this one. Unmistakeably filler, but still, pretty good. Also the hits here are some of their best. Overall I really like this album, especially considering this is a Foo Fighters album. | 7 | | Amon Amarth Surtur Rising
This is probably my favourite Amon Amarth album. It's memorable and epic enough to remain a great album after all this time. Great album, really enjoy listening to it everytime. | 8 | | Evile Five Serpent's Teeth
A great mix of old school and more modern thrash metal. Fun and engaging, but still feels like it's a little half-baked most of the time. Cool album nonetheless. | 9 | | Nightwish Imaginaerum
I liked this album overall, but it's not very memorable apart from a few chosen songs. Still, this is probably my favorite Nightwish album - never really liked their music that much outside of this one. | 10 | | Sylosis Edge of the Earth
A fantastic blend of thrash and melodic death metal. This album is brutally aggressive, beautifully melodic and intelligently complex, all at the same time. Really loved this one - a potential modren classic. | 11 | | Mastodon The Hunter | 12 | | Neal Morse Testimony 2 | |
