Top 10 Prog Metal Songs of 2010s
One entry per artist |
1 | | Periphery Periphery
2010
"Jetpacks Was Yes"
This song creates an unforgettable atmosphere that honestly Periphery fails to recreate in their proceeding works. Jetpacks stands as one of their best achievements in their early days as a band, and one of their best as a whole. |
2 | | Between the Buried and Me The Parallax: Hypersleep Dialogues
2011
"Augment of Rebirth"
The entire The Parallax EP could go here but Augment of Rebirth is my favorite. This just embodies everything I love about prog, metalcore, death metal, and was morphed to fit into this complex story that has me gripped the entire way listening. |
3 | | Ne Obliviscaris Portal of I
2012
"Forget Not"
If this song was an animal it would be a majestic pegasus, this song is dripping with emotion that is highly resonant. The way this song builds and crescendo's into the heavier moments later on in the song is truly something behold. |
4 | | Persefone Spiritual Migration
2013
"Inner Fullness"
A lot what I like about this song is probably why Trivium fans like them so much, it's all about the riffs and the guitar solos on this one. Just a blast to listen, though the song is not without it's fair share of more simple beautiful passages as well. |
5 | | The Contortionist Language
2014
"Thrive"
Thrive is truly hypnotic, the atmosphere created on this song is something awe inspiring. A lot of what I like about this song is in the lyrics, The Contortionist in general has some really fantastic lyrical content. |
6 | | David Maxim Micic ECO
2015
"Stardust"
The most delicate and soothing song so far. At the beginning of the song it could almost pass as a Julien Baker song, with its mesmerising subtle guitar passages and female vocal melody on top. Though in usual prog metal fashion, we shift gears as the song becomes louder creating some of the most beautiful melodic moments seen in the landscape of the genre. |
7 | | Fallujah Dreamless
2016
"Amber Gaze"
Very much a riff-centric one again. This song combines I love about deathcore, death metal, post metal, and prog metal to create something truly unique and unforgettable. The riffing of Scott Carstairs constantly has me in a chokehold. |
8 | | Wide Eyes Paradoxica
2017
"The First Contact"
Kind of similar to Thrive in that this song creates a very hypnotic atmosphere overall. The feel I'd describe this as overall is triumphant, the melodies are very uplifting and gratifying. |
9 | | The Ocean Phanerozoic I: Palaeozoic
2018
"Devonian: Nascent"
This song comprises a lot of components from previously spoken of songs, the slow build as well as the emotive resonance of Forget Not, the hypnotic qualities of Thrive. While the songs structure is not exactly striking new ground, The Ocean manage to concoct an incredible song featuring Jonas from Katatonia. |
10 | | Shadow Of Intent Melancholy
2019
"The Dreaded Mystic Abyss"
Shadow of Intent are not usually a prog metal band, but this song absolutely is. This song feels like a Dream Theater instrumental track combined with the visceral impact of SoI's usual deathcore pastiche. The song also has Between the Buried and Me qualities with section often switching within a split second. SoI ever since I heard them have been one of my favorite deathcore bands, but this song solidified them as being probably my favorite. |
