Tundra's AOTY 2022 |
25 | | Parius The Signal Heard Throughout Space
Progressive Metal
Very solid prog metal stuff. Similar to the likes of Native Construct, Haken and Between the Buried and Me. Will definitely need more listens could bump up a few spots.
Favorite track: The Human Molecule |
24 | | Carly Rae Jepsen The Loneliest Time
Dance-Pop
I'm ngl, Call Me Maybe blows, but CRJ music has definitely evolved wonderfully over the years. A lot of this album is really addicting for me.
Favorite track: Sideways |
23 | | Charlie Griffiths Tiktaalika
Progressive Metal
Very much a Haken type of album, pretty good.
Favorite track: Arctic Cemetary ft. Tommy Rogers |
22 | | Warforged The Grove | Sundial
Progressive Metal/Technical Death Metal
It's not the most mindblowing thing ever but it's very solid nonetheless. Also get a lot of deathcore vibes from this.
Favorite track: Self Destruct Seminar |
21 | | White Ward False Light
Progessive Metal/Black Metal
A surprise to be sure, but a welcome one. Was expecting this to be non stop blast beats but glad I was wrong.
Favorite track: Leviathan |
20 | | David Maxim Micic BILO IV
Progressive Metal/Avant-Garde Metal
DMM is one of the best kept secrets of the prog metal world, though Bilo IV wasnt exactly I expected. Lots of interludes and little actual songs. The songs on here are quite good, however I dont find them much better than cuts on previous DMM releases.
Favorite track: Cry |
19 | | Softcult Year Of The Snake
Alternative Rock/Shoegaze
This is the combination of alternative rock, shoegaze, and grunge I never knew I needed.
Favorite track: Perfect Blue |
18 | | Flume Palaces
Future Bass/Glitch pop
Gorgeous. This guy in the comments said it best "song arrangements might be confined to a pop framework, but the sound design and the production are insane here. It's so addictive"
Favorite track: Highest Building |
17 | | Oceans Ate Alaska Disparity
Progessive Metalcore
Old vocalist James is back and band is sounding better than ever. Onslaught of riffing from beginning to end.
Favorite track: Dead Behind the Eyes |
16 | | Meshuggah Immutable
Djent
Welp, I actually kinda like this Meshuggah album. Shit. |
15 | | Persefone Metanoia
Progressive Death Metal
Though I don't prefer it to their previous record Aathma, it's still a quality piece of work. Many gorgeous sections in this, just wish there was a more of balance between high and low-energy songs.
Favorite track: Architecture of the I |
14 | | Animals As Leaders Parrhesia
Progressive Metal/Djent
This all feels so monochrome and mechanical. Stuff like The Joy of Motion didn't feel like this. Most songs are good, but nothing about them wow'd me to a large extent.
Favorite track: Micro-Aggressions |
13 | | Quadeca I Didn't Mean to Haunt You
Art Pop/Folktronica
Quadeca, once a hip hop artist has transcended the genre by including so much experimentation and imaginative ness to his work. I was already a fan of his last record, but it goes without saying this is a great step forward.
Favorite track: Born Yesterday |
12 | | Enterprise Earth The Chosen
Deathcore/Melodic Death Metal
Gives me big Shadow of Intent Reclaimer vibes on this, with somehow even more urgency on this album.. yeah this album goes.. at breakneck pace.
Favorite track: The Chosen |
11 | | Bad Omens The Death of Peace of Mind
Metalcore
Well, word of mouth was main thing that got me back listening to this honestly. Tracks 1 to 10 I think are great, then it drops off 11 to 15, those last 5 songs are unneeded, I digress. While it's not the most adventurous record of the year, it's an easy album to put on in any type of mood for me.
Favorite track: Like a Villain |
10 | | Reliqa I Don't Know What I Am
Progressive Metalcore/Djent
Don't let the tags fool you. Those maybe the primary genres for this but they stand out a lot from the pack of other bands in the scene. "Like a mix of Protest The Hero, Polaris, System of a Down and older Karnivool. Especially the vocals stand out with some really interesting vocal melodies and phrases and convincing performances. These guys are gonna blow up." @KrillBoi sputnikmusic
Favorite track: The Bearer of Bad News |
9 | | Little Simz NO THANK YOU
Conscious Hip Hop
Little Simz is one of my favorite Hip Hop artists ever at this point. Every single instrumental on this is superb, the live instrumentation is stunning. Simz rapping is absolutely top notch, there is virtually 0 blemishes here.
Fapvirte track: Silhouette |
8 | | An Abstract Illusion Woe
Progressive Death Metal
A marvelous melodeath outing, pretty much rivaling their top competitor Ne Obliviscaris quite heavily. Basically every track is awe-inspiring, but my favorite riff is from Slaves.
Favorite track: Slaves |
7 | | Northlane Obsidian
Metalcore/Djent
Definitely the most forward-thinking metalcore album of the year. The inclusion of industrial electronic elements is very well done, a great immersive atmosphere is created here.
Favorite track: Xen |
6 | | Imperial Circus Dead Decadence MOGARI - Shi E Fukeru Omoi Wa Rikujoku Sura Kurai
Melodic Death Metal
Bonkers in all the right ways. Every moment on this is supercharged to near perfection. The first track alone is worth the price of admission. The guitar solos on this are jaw-hitting-the-floor type stuff, managing to have on point melodicism whole also being at breakneck speeds on the level of Dragonforce.
Favorite track: Track 2 |
5 | | AngelMaker Sanctum
Melodic Deathcore
Put some respec on Angelmaker name. This is peak deathcore with melody honestly.
Favorite track: Eating the Body of God |
4 | | Unprocessed Gold
Pop Rock/Djent
Took a while for me to accept this one. At first I was annoyed they switched their sound so much, but then I realized they are kinda doing this kind of thing better than Polyphia now. Vocals are really great, every song is super technical while managing to be catchy and memorable.
Favorite track: Rain |
3 | | Rolo Tomassi Where Myth Becomes Memory
Post Metal/Mathcore
Just like their previous album Time Will Die and Love Will Bury It, they've knocked it out of the park again.
Favorite track: Drip |
2 | | Shadow Of Intent Elegy
Symphonic Deathcore
After listening to the new Lorna Shore album, this has really risen for me. They make an effort to not make every song too samey, not every track has the same structure. Ben's vocals are marvelous as ever and Chris Wiseman guitar works is equally as such. Stuff like Reconquest is such a breath of fresh air, I'll be the first one to admit as a standalone track it doesn't work as well, but in the context of the record, it is pretty exceptional. Not to mention the title track suite to close things out, yeah I'm loving this now.
Favorite track: Of Fury |
1 | | Fallujah Empyrean
Progressive Death Metal
I was a initially let down with this, but on subsequent listens I started to enjoy it a fair bit more. Still wouldnt go as far saying it's better than Dreamless or Flesh Prevails, on par for sure.
Favorite track: Bitter Taste of Clarity |
