Some relatively unknown recs
Yesterday I discovered Aidan Knight's awesome Small Reveal in a list of little known wonders, and I thought I might as well do the same. Here are albums that I love which have less than 100 votes, maybe you'll be as lucky as I was yesterday and find your new jam. I cut out all the music in Italian, but I'll do a separate list for that if I see people are interested. |
1 | | The Lonely Heart Show Hope in Shadows
Slowcore, indie folk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dKCOqVB1xdk
I had to add this album myself to the database, I can't believe nobody ever did it. Here is the bandcamp link, it's a great listen: https://thelonelyheartshow.bandcamp.com/album/hope-in-shadows |
2 | | Azure Emote Chronicles of an Aging Mammal
Avant-garde death metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MbXP6SYrg88
This is a Monstrosity side-project if I remember correctly. Pretty technical, unpredictable, electronic and totally crazy, check it out if you are into Unexpect. |
3 | | Tiny Hazard Tiny Hazard
Indie pop, experimental
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vigDek19onY
Another band I had to add to the database. Soothing female vocals, sweet and creepy, this EP will both accompany your dreams and haunt your nightmares. It can be very calm, or it can blast like Lark's Tongues in Aspic by King Crimson. |
4 | | Cardiacs Sing to God
Prog punk?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NqAJcBh3sEQ
British masters, very theatrical, totally nuts. Underground legends, their stuff from the eighties is also good (in case you also want to check that out, I'd recommend Archive Cardiacs, in which they re-recorded a lot of stuff from their great debut cassette Toy World) |
5 | | Lino Capra Vaccina Antico Adagio
Minimalism, experimental
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9d32LfEZaIs
Vibraphone-driven minimalism, sometimes heavily focused on percussion but it never strays too far from its meditative core. |
6 | | The Black Heart Procession 2
Slowcore, indie-folk I guess?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BfethkLK--4
I was surprised to see that these guys are so unknown, I thought they were bigger. Great band, their second album is one of my favorite 90s records |
7 | | Kiss the Anus of a Black Cat An Interlude to the Outermost
Neofolk, apocalyptic folk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PGvdWaO7X9g
I actually like their following album more (Hewers of Wood), it's moodier and the overall recording quality is better, but this album is a great place to start with the band, since it also has drums and it's a bit more entertaining. |
8 | | Circus Movin' On
Progressive Rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=idZCZtFjsKk
Forgotten pearl from the seventies. No electric guitars, no keyboards, most of the harmony is created by multi-layered bass guitars and flutes. |
9 | | Kosmophobia Kosmophobia
Technical Death Metal, spacey prog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yBWfi1fPOk8
A band from my area. They only released an EP, but it's glorious, and they never broke up, so there's hope. |
10 | | Delta Sleep Management
Math rock, post hardcore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=P4gvD0mIR1A
Exciting music, vocals are also pretty good, which is rare for a math rock band. Check out the video, it's dank. |
11 | | Late of the Pier Fantasy Black Channel
Indietronica
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bTnmvM0bSYs
Maybe the most famous band on this list. One minute into this song, you'll know if you love or hate this band, I personally find them too catchy to be ignored. |
12 | | Lubomyr Melnyk Three Solo Pieces
Classical, minimalism
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NdZVKgHlMyU
Ukranian pianist known for his relentless passion for the sustain pedal, very relaxing and beautiful. |
13 | | Punch Brothers The Phosphorescent Blues
Progressive bluegrass, folk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1VhxhK_bbGs
If you like prog music, folk music and you have a taste for skilled musicians, you have no excuse not to listen to the song I put here. |
14 | | The Plot To Blow Up The Eiffel Tower Dissertation, Honey
Jazzy post hardcore
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y3ths3T11YA
Short album, but very unique. |
15 | | Tristan Perich 1-Bit Symphony
1-bit, experimental
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Yh6-X9Vs_vk
You order a cd, and you get an empty case with some devices on the inside, and a hole to plug your headphones, allowing you to witness music in the making. The idea is very interesting, and I also like the result, even if I understand that some people find it painful to listen to. |
16 | | Clock Opera Ways to Forget
Indie pop
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EnDqI_F6pnQ
Slightly baroque, very melodic, not these guys' biggest fan but if you like indie pop you might find this enjoyable. |
17 | | Yakuza Way of the Dead
Avant-garde metal, but not extremely weird
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lRTY4gL1pCs
Before being metal's favorite saxophone player, Bruce Lamont was Yakuza's frontman, and this album is good... If you don't trust me, trust Mastodon, Neurosis and Celtic Frost, they all love Yakuza. |
18 | | Douglas Fur The dried up rivers will be the mass graves of
Bluegrassy punk, folk punk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kpkg-xkO_wk
Douglas Für is folk punk's Buzz Lightyear. I'm not sure what I meant with that sentence but if you like Ramshackle Glory, Ghost Mice or anything of that sort you should listen to this. |
19 | | The Taxpayers God, Forgive These Bastards
Jazz folk punk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L11WFlpSQeI
There's a lot of 80s hardcore punk in here, a good chunk of jazz instrumentation, and a folk punk attitude. |
20 | | The Trojans Celtic Ska
Celtic folk, ska/reggae
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JHfylwEDo-Y
I've been listening to this for ten years maybe, and I still don't know whether I enjoy it or not, but I guess I do since I spin this record every once in a while. You can't deny that it's unique. |
21 | | Zu Carboniferous
Jazzcore, noise
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hun8GlxGYus
I am fairly sure that this record has killed more people than lactose intollerance. |
22 | | Fuzzy Lights Twin Feathers
Post rock, folk
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ig5GYK5Fb14
Post rock with a folky violin. Pretty calm 90% of the time, but it can explode. |
23 | | Electric President Electric President
Folktronica
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Czx5VBZYfnc
This is also pretty famous, but still. Good band. |
24 | | Alamaailman Vasarat Kaarmelautakunta
Klezmer, prog rock, avant-garde metal sometimes?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PoaLy6-BXFw
Great instrumental band led by a Finnish jew who used to be a professional video game reviewer. You will never listen to anything like this: a pump organ, two cellos, a drumkit, a trombone and a saxophone. |
25 | | The Samuel Jackson Five The Samuel Jackson Five
Prog rock, post rock, cheesy
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=moe2MRrlbuM
These guys are fairly known for their instrumental stuff, but not many know this record. The falsetto is glorious! |
26 | | Stara Rzeka Cień chmury nad ukrytym polem
Folk, electronica, black metal, experimental
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QrgAZXqYq2g
Mostly instrumental, moody, unpredictable. |
27 | | Klabautamann Merkur
Post-/Avant-garde black metal, prog
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsn2m21eCVE
Pretty mild black metal, can get very melodic, lyrics both in German and English, not to be missed out by black/prog metal fans! |
28 | | Dead Skeletons Dead Magick
Darkwave, Psychedelic
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CsyrOGRxF0E
Either you find it oddly hypnotic or utterly boring, I quite like it. |
29 | | Dungen Ta Det Lugnt
Psychedelic rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kj2fdV8brXo
Cheesy choirs, good production, sexy language |
30 | | I Love You But I've Chosen Darkness Dust
Indie rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0Y5Mn_rz3zM
Not many people know this wonderful band, and those who do don't even seem to appreciate it too much. I don't get it, I love this record, some good tunes in it! |
31 | | Lullaby for the Working Class Blanket Warm
Folk rock
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hwSq8Bpj7CQ
Oh come on! I thought this was a 90s folk rock classic like Red House Painters or something... Oh well, check them out if you like indie folk like Bright Eyes. |
32 | | The Little Explorer The Little Explorer
Emo
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bq7c7h7I-LA
Pre-Crash of Rhinos, not quite as good as Crash of Rhinos, but give it a try if you are into midwest emo. |
33 | | Wrekmeister Harmonies You've Always Meant So Much To Me
Drone, post metal
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Iky6f1HIRE
Saw this guy's band twice. "You've Always Meant so Much to Me" is also available on CD bundled with their second record, which is just as good. |
