| Belgian metal bands
What does the world know about the small country of Belgium, apart from the famous beer brewers? For example: it has generated some really interesting metal bands since the early 80's. Here a list of the bands I like or otherwise like to recommend, listed from 'very' to 'quite'. | 1 | | Ostrogoth Ecstasy and Danger
In my humble opinion the best metal band from Belgium, still existing and revered by James Hetfield and Biff Byford. The ep 'Full Moon's Eyes' (1983) is a very heavy, varied, catchy and well composed album, as well as the 1984 album 'Ecstacy and Danger'. Check them out, cause they are a great band and deserve more attention. | 2 | | Acid Maniac
Early speed metal band with female singer, hailing from the city of Bruges they became underground legends with their furious, Venom meets Punk metal. First outputs (early 80's) were strong, but the album 'Engine Beast' was too commercial and deviant. So the flame burnt shortly but intense. | 3 | | Aborted Retrogore
Death/Grind veterans transforming a repulsive horror atmosphere into extreme heavy, brutal music. These guys are so kind, nice and easy going, but still produce really evil and stunning music. Max Cavalera praised their Sepultura cover 'Arise' as one of the best he had ever heard. Ken Bedene's percussion is particularly impressive. | 4 | | Enthroned Carnage In World's Beyond
Uncompromising Black/Death Metal band active since the early 90's. Lyrics focusing on satanic subjects, fast riffing, shrieks from the lungs of Hell itself. Good song writing and melodic passages. A must hear for true Black Metal lovers | 5 | | Crossfire (BE) See you in Hell
A not generally recognized band from Belgium, unoriginal and generic in all details, from logo to art work, from singing style to riffs, these epigons of Krokus, Judas Priest and Saxon tried to copy everything cool and metal at the outbreak of the eighties. But...even it's hard to listen to the singer Peter de Wint, and the production is muddy, I like them. Don't know why, must be nostalgia, I guess. | 6 | | Ancient Rites Fatherland
Notorious Black Metal band formed in 1988, but after many line-up changes they now fit in with the Post-Black Metal or Viking Metal current. What's in a name? The music is epic and thunderous, intertwined with operatic vocals and folk metal instrumentation. | 7 | | Wiegedood De Doden Hebben Het Goed II
"Cascadian Black Metal" from Belgium, characterized by long, atmospheric, spun out compositions. | 8 | | Amenra Mass I: Prayer I - VI
from the city of Kortrijk, this Sludge/Hardcore band received positive attention and critical acclaim with their 'Mass' albums. The style is grandiose, experimental, colossal and incorporates the visual as well. | 9 | | Warhead (BE) Speedway
Thrashy Metallica adepts who released their debut album 'Speedway' in 1984. But, as is regularly the case, the singer spoils the fun. He sounds like Biff Byford with a heavy cold or laryngitis. Guitar parts are heavy and fast paced, but generic. But still: nice energetic stuff from the 80's, the intention is ok and Warhead were among the early thrashers in Europe. | 10 | | Ithilien Shaping the Soul
Atmospheric but still agressive Folk Metal including flutes, hurdy-gurdy and lots of Eluveitie influences. | 11 | | Killer wall of sound
The Belgian answer to Motorhead, this trio with nicknames hailing from the city of Antwerp. Their album 'Wall of Sound' is quite good, old skool metal with standouts 'Kleptomania' and the title track | |
