After a legendary first season, a patchy second, a cliffhanger-riddled finale, a maligned prequel film, AND a twenty-five year hiatus... Twin Peaks is back. Can you believe it? What are Sputnik's thoughts on season three? Call me a fanboy, but I am loving it so far. It seems to be handling its triple responsibility of justifying its return, picking up the story in a satisfying manner, and redeeming itself after season two's nadirs. I'm loving the mixture of nostalgia and novelty, humour and horror. Four episodes in, and the story feels immense. Your guess is as good as mine as to where this is gonna go. All I know is that once Cooper snaps out of his fugue state and makes it back to Twin Peaks, shit is gonna git real. 8.5/10 so far, I'd say. List is digs
1Coil
The Ape Of Naples

I've listened to Coil for years, and somehow slept on their best album. 5/5
2Prefab Sprout
Jordan: The Comeback

A sophistipop odyssey, balancing its camp bombast with genuinely fantastic songwriting. 4/5
3New Order
Blue Monday

Somehow, this isn't the jam-to-end-all-jams that I remembered it being. Maybe it sounds better in a club or a coming-of-age movie, rather than simply listened to on headphones in front of your laptop at 2AM. Still rips tho 4/5
4Perfume Genius
No Shape

Great production, some lovely melodies, his voice just doesn't do much for me. Coming from someone who loves Joanna Newsom, that's a worry 3.5/5
5Linkin Park
One More Light

s/o to Lincoln and the Parks. Thanks for the unintentional laughs, and boosting my objectivity rating 1/5
6Jenny Hval and Susanna
Meshes Of Voice

Not as good as Viscera, but what is? 4.5/5
7Nico
The Marble Index

I feel like this album was tailored specifically to my tastes... a crisp and supple 5/5
8Elsiane
Hybrid

I implore any trip-hop fans out there to check this weird and wonderful record. Her voice adds an uncanny, creepy quality to the beats, which are some of the lushest I've heard in a loooong time. 4/5
9Pete Rodriguez
I Like It Like That

Scorchin' hot Latin jazz / pop 4/5
10Anna Von Hausswolff
Ceremony

Kate Bush comparisons aside, this was very impressive... 4/5
11Gwen Stefani
Love. Angel. Music. Baby.

Half of this was never any good, the other half has aged very well. Catchy, kitschy pop, for when the situation calls for such things 3.5/5
12Thurston Moore
Rock N Roll Consciousness

Credit where credit is due, Thurston invented a new genre with this album: piddlingly medio-core 2.5/5
13Damon Albarn
Everyday Robots

Why can't Thom Yorke make solo albums like this? Everyday Robots is a record of crumbling guitars, displaced beats, sombre vocals, and fractured piano chords. It is alternately greyscale and morose, then soaring and hopeful. An absolute gem. 4.5/5
14Vomir
Claustration

I don't usually like harsh noise, but the (one) texture Vomir achieved on this album is pretty glorious 3.5/5
15The Zombies
Odessey and Oracle

Better than the Beach Boys or the Beatles? Piss yourself. A generous 3.5/5
16Lightning Bolt
Oblivion Hunter

Does a really nice job of splicing their earlier, lo-fi production style with the more punchy, riffy(?) vibe of their latter day albums. The last song fails to justify its length in the same way Transmissionary or 2 Towers, and as such the album ends on a weaker note. Nonetheless, a rock solid release, one I'm glad I went back and checked. 3.5/5
17Pavement
Slanted and Enchanted

Not going to pretend this was anything other than serviceable jangle pop / indie / lo fi. Robert Christgau's favourite band of the 90s? Really? Gimme Straitjacket Fits, The Chills and The Clean any day 3/5
18Nick Cave and Warren Ellis
The Assasination of Jesse James

Watched this film on a recent flight from Reykjavik to Helsinki, fucked me up. Listened to alone, this is a brooding and heartbreaking suite of music. The violin motif is beyond haunting. Combined with the sweeping cinematography of the film, and the sepia colour scheme of the rural Midwest, the melancholic atmosphere produced is truly something to behold. 5/5 film, 4.5/5 score
19Susanna
Triangle

Found this art pop album by accident, and I'm so glad I did. Will bring sonic delight to fans of Hval, Obel and Sundfor. 4/5
20Arab On Radar
Rough Day At The Orifice

Listening to this noise rock album is like grating your skin off with a piece of rusted metal and then bathing in piss, all while a gang of homeless men yell obscenely at you. Highly recommended, by the way. 3.5/5
