After a legendary first season, a patchy second, a cliffhanger-riddled finale, a maligned prequel film, AND a twenty-five year hiatus... Twin Peaks is back. Can you believe it? What are Sputnik's thoughts on season three? Call me a fanboy, but I am loving it so far. It seems to be handling its triple responsibility of justifying its return, picking up the story in a satisfying manner, and redeeming itself after season two's nadirs. I'm loving the mixture of nostalgia and novelty, humour and horror. Four episodes in, and the story feels immense. Your guess is as good as mine as to where this is gonna go. All I know is that once Cooper snaps out of his fugue state and makes it back to Twin Peaks, shit is gonna git real. 8.5/10 so far, I'd say.
List is digs | 1 | | Coil The Ape Of Naples
I've listened to Coil for years, and somehow slept on their best album. 5/5 | 2 | | Prefab Sprout Jordan: The Comeback
A sophistipop odyssey, balancing its camp bombast with genuinely fantastic songwriting. 4/5 | 3 | | New Order Blue Monday
Somehow, this isn't the jam-to-end-all-jams that I remembered it being. Maybe it sounds better in a club or a coming-of-age movie, rather than simply listened to on headphones in front of your laptop at 2AM. Still rips tho 4/5 | 4 | | Perfume Genius No Shape
Great production, some lovely melodies, his voice just doesn't do much for me. Coming from someone who loves Joanna Newsom, that's a worry 3.5/5 | 5 | | Linkin Park One More Light
s/o to Lincoln and the Parks. Thanks for the unintentional laughs, and boosting my objectivity rating 1/5 | 6 | | Jenny Hval and Susanna Meshes Of Voice
Not as good as Viscera, but what is? 4.5/5 | 7 | | Nico The Marble Index
I feel like this album was tailored specifically to my tastes... a crisp and supple 5/5 | 8 | | Elsiane Hybrid
I implore any trip-hop fans out there to check this weird and wonderful record. Her voice adds an uncanny, creepy quality to the beats, which are some of the lushest I've heard in a loooong time. 4/5 | 9 | | Pete Rodriguez I Like It Like That
Scorchin' hot Latin jazz / pop 4/5 | 10 | | Anna Von Hausswolff Ceremony
Kate Bush comparisons aside, this was very impressive... 4/5 | 11 | | Gwen Stefani Love. Angel. Music. Baby.
Half of this was never any good, the other half has aged very well. Catchy, kitschy pop, for when the situation calls for such things 3.5/5 | 12 | | Thurston Moore Rock N Roll Consciousness
Credit where credit is due, Thurston invented a new genre with this album: piddlingly medio-core 2.5/5 | 13 | | Damon Albarn Everyday Robots
Why can't Thom Yorke make solo albums like this? Everyday Robots is a record of crumbling guitars, displaced beats, sombre vocals, and fractured piano chords. It is alternately greyscale and morose, then soaring and hopeful. An absolute gem. 4.5/5 | 14 | | Vomir Claustration
I don't usually like harsh noise, but the (one) texture Vomir achieved on this album is pretty glorious 3.5/5 | 15 | | The Zombies Odessey and Oracle
Better than the Beach Boys or the Beatles? Piss yourself. A generous 3.5/5 | 16 | | Lightning Bolt Oblivion Hunter
Does a really nice job of splicing their earlier, lo-fi production style with the more punchy, riffy(?) vibe of their latter day albums. The last song fails to justify its length in the same way Transmissionary or 2 Towers, and as such the album ends on a weaker note. Nonetheless, a rock solid release, one I'm glad I went back and checked. 3.5/5 | 17 | | Pavement Slanted and Enchanted
Not going to pretend this was anything other than serviceable jangle pop / indie / lo fi. Robert Christgau's favourite band of the 90s? Really? Gimme Straitjacket Fits, The Chills and The Clean any day 3/5 | 18 | | Nick Cave and Warren Ellis The Assasination of Jesse James
Watched this film on a recent flight from Reykjavik to Helsinki, fucked me up. Listened to alone, this is a brooding and heartbreaking suite of music. The violin motif is beyond haunting. Combined with the sweeping cinematography of the film, and the sepia colour scheme of the rural Midwest, the melancholic atmosphere produced is truly something to behold. 5/5 film, 4.5/5 score | 19 | | Susanna Triangle
Found this art pop album by accident, and I'm so glad I did. Will bring sonic delight to fans of Hval, Obel and Sundfor. 4/5 | 20 | | Arab On Radar Rough Day At The Orifice
Listening to this noise rock album is like grating your skin off with a piece of rusted metal and then bathing in piss, all while a gang of homeless men yell obscenely at you. Highly recommended, by the way. 3.5/5 | |

05.31.17 | wow bob wow | butcherboy
05.31.17 | Jesse James was a beautiful movie.. and that score is the best one Cave and Ellis did.. the director is the same guy who filmed the Skeleton Tree recording process.. you seen that yet? | ArsMoriendi
05.31.17 | Season 3 Episode 3 might be the best Twin Peaks thing ever. | jtswope
05.31.17 | ^ Yeah that episode was amazing. | polyrhythm
05.31.17 | agreed, though I'm not sure any episode will be as atmospheric or as aesthetically pleasing as the season two finale was for me | Gmork89
05.31.17 | I just want Cooper back to his old self, that would be so insanely awesome I almost feel like it would be too good to be true, and they will kill him off or make him weird through the whole thing.
Season 3 episode 3 for me was the worst one, it felt way overboard with the abstract stuff. I thought 4 was the closest to capturing the old magic for me.
Also, Matthew Lillard is totally killing it, some of his best acting ever I would say. | jtswope
05.31.17 | Episode 4 was great also and fucking hilarious at times. That kitchen scene omg.
I feel like the idea that Cooper will never be his old self is kind of a cool and interesting one, given how long he spent in another dimension. It also seems not out of the question that David Lynch would keep the old-fashioned Cooper out of this series and subvert people's expectations that we'd eventually get the same old Cooper. Though I think we'll get pieces of him back eventually if not entirely by the end. One of the things that's kept me invested in this season is that it's been so unpredictable. I'm so excited for more. | ArsMoriendi
06.01.17 | I don't want it to "capture the old magic" I want something new, which luckily this has been... or at least it's more like Inland Empire like I expected which is a plus. | polyrhythm
06.01.17 | We'll get old Coop back, it is just gonna take some time to recover from 25 years in a mindmelting parallel dimension where your only company are malevolent spirits who speak cryptic things backwards | polyrhythm
06.01.17 | tbh I think that cup of coffee was a big milestone | Gmork89
06.01.17 | @ArsMoriendi
I do too but I don't want it to be quite as different as it's been, a lot of the characters are acting completely different or like exaggerated versions of themselves, and the abstract stuff has been over the top in my opinion. I feel like it's getting back to it's old vibe with the 4th episode though, and Bobby actually made it feel way more grounded than it has been so far. I miss having some sense of normality between character conversations, its pretty much as weird in the real world as it is in the black lodge most of the time this season. | polyrhythm
06.02.17 | I think pretty much everyone is acting within the established nature of their character tbh | polyrhythm
06.09.17 | thoughts on episode 5? |
