My Personal Ranking of Metallica's Discography

Just how I feel about each Metallica album. Discourse is always welcome, just don't be an ass.

Load

I’m lumping Reload in here as well since I consider them to essentially be a double album. Ask almost any Metallica fan, and they’ll tell you that St. Anger is worse than either of these. While I can’t really argue that point, the fact remains that I would rather listen to St. Anger 100 times than listen to this excessively, painfully mediocre buttrock once. At least St. Anger was creative in its shiteness.

St. Anger

Ah, the meme itself. It is exactly as bad as you’ve been told it is. From downright frustrating songwriting to among the most botched production of any metal album, this thing sucks the fumes from an 18 wheeler’s exhaust pipe. But I’ll give it some points for… “creativity”. There is something somewhat admirable, I think, in a band hitting full fuck it mode and doing whatever they want. I at least think it's more admirable than the slumming, slow, boring tripe of Load/Reload.

Death Magnetic

A perfectly acceptable “return to form” for the most part, but it suffers from some wretched production and just being too damn long. Some damn good cuts though (see; Suicide and Redemption, The End of the Line, Cyanide, All Nightmare Long)

Hardwired... to Self-Destruct

Pretty much everything I said about DM applies here, just reverse underproduction for overproduction… which is better, I guess? Anyways, there are also some great tracks here (see; Spit Out the Bone, Dream No More, Halo On Fire, Atlas, Rise!), but both of these albums are generally kind of underwhelming, even if they’re a vast improvement over their three predecessors from where I’m sitting.

Metallica

The Black Album sits in a strange spot of being both overrated and underappreciated. This is far from being the Metallica album that deserved to sell as well it did, and from what I understand, this is when the fanbase became truly insufferable from just about any side. On one hand, you have the annoying normies shouting about Enter Sandman, and on the other hand you have the infinitely more insufferable people who shout ‘BETRAYAL!” and ‘SELL OUTS!’. Like chill, guys. We all know they sold out in the Load/Reload era. But more to the point, this is a tight and infinitely listenable album with almost nothing but great cuts, overplayed as some of them may be. Through the Never fucking shreds. That is all.

Master of Puppets

‘SACRILEGE! MASTER ONLY AT FOURTH BEST! KILL HIM! BURN THE HEATHEN AT THE STAKE!’

Yes, I am aware that my opinion sucks, and no, I don't care. Regardless, this is where we get into 5/5 territory. There’s simply not a less than stellar cut on this album. It is so beyond influential at this point that there’s hardly any point in talking about it. Everything you’ve heard about how good this album is is 100% true. It’s just a release that doesn’t gel with me quite as much as the others do. That said, it is the quintessential thrash album (and debatably the quintessential metal album) for a reason.

Ride the Lightning

I’ll be honest, this would probably be higher on the list if I wasn’t forever doomed to be burned out on this record until the end of time. I have listened to it so much that I could probably hum any instrumental or vocal part of any song at any given time. It’s a part of my DNA at this point, and I have no reason to listen to it, so I just don’t very often anymore. But despite my listener’s fatigue, this is still a flawless album. I cannot even begin to imagine a flaw that this record might have. It is the apotheosis of thrash. Instrumental, lyrical, vocal, and emotional complexity, integrity, and talent, backed by the ideal thrash production. It’s the shit.
2Metallica
Kill 'Em All

Speaking as a kid in a thrash metal band, I cannot think of anything more inspiring than Kill ‘em All. It's so perfect. The complete lack of pretense combined with the truly remarkable musicianship on display makes for something truly special, and it's a record I’m not sure I could ever really get tired of. Oh, and the Four Horsemen is the best Metallica song. End of story.
1Metallica
...And Justice for All

Despite the production, from where I’m sitting, this is Metallica’s crowning achievement. Flawed as it may be, I think it is a true testament to just how good this band was that they pulled this lofty, borderline progressive concept album. It's another of their works that is thoroughly burrowed into my subconscious, and will likely always influence in some way any musical project I would take on. The emotional impact and pathos held on this record is something that I often find goes overlooked. It's always an emotionally cathartic listen for me. The band had just lost Burton, and were adapting to having Newsted in the band, and all of that rage and frustration shows in the songs here. Their friend was stolen from them, so they elected to write an album about injustice and wrongdoing. Everything about the record contains nothing but pure spite and hatred, and as someone who deals with his own issues in this realm, it's something I understand in ways I can't readily explain.
