11 | | Anna von Hausswolff Dead Magic
Doomy occult stuff with incredible female vocals. |
10 | | Alkaline Trio Is This Thing Cursed?
I sadly hadn’t heard any of Alkaline Trio’s work until this album but this sure was the introduction I hoped it would be. This has some of the catchiest songs of the year. The consistency of an album by a band at this stage of their career is something to be marveled and I only wish I had heard their other material long ago. |
9 | | Horrendous Idol
I was admittedly quite late getting to this but I can’t say enough how mind blowing this album was. (see cover art for reaction) The audible, technical bass grooves, tight guitar playing and intense drum work is something to behold. |
8 | | of Montreal White Is Relic/Irrealis Mood
It saddens me that I hadn’t heard Of Montreal until this album but let me tell you this has been a real treating starting with this album. This has some incredible atmosphere to it and grooves that stick like hot glue. An adventurous and tasteful album with a ton of charisma. |
7 | | Parquet Courts Wide Awake
This album took me by surprise and continued to grow over repeated listens with conscious lyrics about today’s world and Savage’s thoughtful views. It’s just an added bonus that the music is entertaining as hell to match. |
6 | | Man with a Mission Chasing the Horizon
Man with a Mission are one of the most entertaining offerings from Japan and there’s plenty of reason for it. Hearkening the messaging prowess of a modern day Rage Against the Machine, these fun semi political offerings are not without their fair share of fun and playful moments. |
5 | | Rolo Tomassi Time Will Die And Love Will Bury It
Rolo Tomassi hadn’t met the radar of many until this album but I loved these guys since I first heard Hysterics last year. This was a bold and triumphant offering with splendid diversity and power all around. It most definitely earned it’s spot in my top 5 and I know that a vast majority of other’s will justifiably pick this as their respective AOTY. Although it didn’t snag first, it’s still a stellar album in my book. |
4 | | The Wonder Years Sister Cities
It took this long for The Wonder Years to clench my attention but I’m so glad they finally did. Though some could describe Soupy’s vocals here melodramatic I strongly disagree and enraptured by his deliveries and the buildups to the emotional climaxes and heart entrenched offerings given here. Some of this nearly brought me to tears on several occasions long after my first listen. A touching album which held a place close to my heart this year. |
3 | | Foxing Nearer My God
I wanted it all from Foxing and they sure did deliver. This album brought palpable emotional tenderness, energy, vision and a no holds barred personality that was well above my expectations. This easily stole the spot for my Indie Rock album of the year. From the stellar solo of Lich Prince, to the blissful offering of Five Cups and the moody Won’t Drown. I was sold from the start. |
2 | | Daughters You Won't Get What You Want
Where to even start here?... This thing is like a thriller movie in headphones. An album which swivels between discordant noise rock, spastic grind and grimy industrial grooves. A marvel amongst Daughter’s wild discography filled with ambition and creative vision. This was exactly what I wanted. (pun intended) |
1 | | Mid-Air Thief Crumbling
In a stacked year with so many contenders duking it out for this spot, it’s not without surprise this album garnered the most attention from me. This dazzling blend of folk and electronica creates soundscapes and cascading melodies that will carry you to majestic heights. A hidden gem amongst the vast landscape of music that was released this year. I attest that Daughters would have normally taken this spot easily as it melds with my music taste more naturally, but this album just swept me off my feet without hassle or care. |
