Metal: Cult Classics Pt. XXI
Got another 10 to drop. |
1 | | Iron Monkey Our Problem
Cult sludge classic from the Nottingham area: a place known mostly for Nottingham Castle, Robin Hood and presently also for career gangsters. Eyehategod-like riffs played in a more pummeling hardcore mode with a grimy British-feeling twist to it featuring a completely insane vocal performance. |
2 | | Runemagick The Supreme Force of Eternity
Atmospheric death metal before atmospheric death metal was a thing. A hypnotizing hellish vibe with a slight melodic undertone brought to you by the former Sacramentum drummer. Don't sleep on this or the follow-up. |
3 | | Pride and Glory Pride and Glory
Before starting the better known Black Label Society, Zakk Wylde had this little band. 70's southern rock meets old school Sabbathian metal might be the crux of the matter, but the songwriting is surprisingly varied and the performances are even more so surprisingly passionate. Best Zakk album? Perhaps. |
4 | | Orange Goblin Frequencies from Planet Ten
Often overlooked royalties of British stoner metal. Going into a more straightforward (but still solid) direction later on, the London band's debut has equal moments of stoner pummeling as well as creative psychedelic wanderings. Don't pass up on this, don't pass up on the next ones either and go see them live when you get the chance. |
5 | | Deceased Fearless Undead Machines
This time using a George A. Romero scenery, this is the album where Deceased formed the sound the band became known for on subsequent releases. Forever a cult band, forever deserving of more attention. |
6 | | Ufomammut Idolum
The Italian masters of bad trip doom strike again. Listening to this baked can go two ways: either you're in a state of bliss or you're in for an ER visit. |
7 | | Indian Guiltless
While they became better known with From All Purity, this record was already a homerun for the Chicago scum-sludgers. Every time I listen to this record I end up wondering what I ever did to Dylan O'Toole to make him so thoroughly pissed at me. One of the most vicious vocalists ever; and competition is fierce in that department. |
8 | | Gates Of Ishtar At Dusk And Forever
Short-lived band that tread the fine line between melodic death metal and melodic black metal. Either way; riffs and atmosphere aplenty. |
9 | | Nightbringer Ego Dominus Tuus
Another band from what might be the hardest working man in US black metal. And again it's a showcase in not forsaking melody for evilness and vice versa. A work of true excellence. |
10 | | Hooded Menace Darkness Drips Forth
A fairly recent addition, but it's another strike for Finnish doom-death favorites Hooded Menace...
...and that's good enough. |
