madrigal30 04.24.22	while you're certainly correct to a degree on that last point gyro, it's really up to the individual. in this case, detailing the soul-searching really was kind of done in the thread, and i'm sure we'd both see it as invasive to press neek for details into their deeper inner life. there's value in their story and if they volunteer to share it to you, then listening and learning is a great response-- in this case, though, in which the dialogue was opened by sharing, i'd be wary about pressing for more detail. regarding the umbrella term discussion-- yes, lots of people have many different gendered traits, and not all of them are consistent with their assigned gender at birth. at the end of the day it's about whether you identify (physically and mentally) with the kinds of expressions demanded by your assigned gender. do they make you feel uncomfortable? would you behave differently if you could remove the label of "man" or "woman" from your shoulders? there are infinitesimal ways to express and label one's nonbinary gender identity, but largely it rests on how one feels in relation to the pre-existing options. for example, it's possible to be a "nonbinary girl" and express yourself largely femininely while still being nonbinary. same with masculinity. all of this is completely divorced from discussions of bodily sex

You are right that many people could identify as non-binary. It all comes down to personal preference. To some people the labels and the semantics aren't important and thus their expression is different than to someone who has really struggled with the implications of the lexic of expression of gender and sexuality. I've never identified much with masculinity, but for me the pronouns are of little consequence to my expression of gender or sexuality, but to someone else that might be very important. So it comes down to basically just respecting everyones different journey navigating a world where we are starting to be a bit more open-minded about how peoples psychology, their bodies, and our constructed definitions of gender and sexuality interact. Yes it can be confusing and clumsy as ideas people largely considered concrete become less tangible and a lot more subjective, but complexity is good and it gives more room for people discover how to feel out a sense of belonging in the world and comfort in their own skin.

I think most people have been bullied over shit like this to some extent in their lives. For me I personally I don't feel comfortable with emphasizing that my perceived lack of "masculine" traits makes me less "male" because I think everyone has "masculine" and "feminine" traits and that it's important to either normalize the latter as desirable qualities in men, or to abolish the idea of the traits being gendered entirely, so I have never felt the need to change my pronouns. Thats just my own little perspective and part of the ideology of why I'm comfortable presenting and identifying as male even though I reject a lot of the social construct that is maleness. Other people will come to different conclusions about what they are comfortable with and the best way to present for what they feel is right. Neek is coming to a different conclusion that is equally valid and all that really matters is that it makes him happier. (note: i say "him" because he said in this list that he is comfortable with he/him pronouns, but will switch to whatever he wants if he decides otherwise)

An example: A gay male acquaintance of mine is dating a trans woman who transitioned during their relationship, but her gender expression doesn’t default his sexuality. I’m sure you can see why it would be problematic to dictate someone else’s sexuality just because he technically is in a heterosexual relationship. Sometimes sexuality and gender expression don’t line up so neatly. Everything is fluid. So it’s ultimately down to him and his sexuality being respected as well as her and her gender being respected and that’s between them.

English are much better at this.
