Kayo Dot - The Manifold Curiosity (post metal)
It's my favorite song of all time. Note that it's a beast of a track with 14 minutes in length, but the total magnificence of the song's movements should make this fly by.

01.01.19 | My SOTY is easily Ariadne from Offerings by Typhoon. The violin swells in towards the end for the absolute greatest catharsis and it wraps up the third movement of the album perfectly. I knew this album was a 5 The moment I heard the prereleases first movement back in October of 2017 and this only helped to confirm that assumption. This song and album cements Typhoon as one of my all time favorite bands and one of 3 bands/artists I’ve given multiple 5s.

Panopticon - "The Moss Beneath the Snow" (Blackened Folk)
A... post metal? post rock? post folk? number that builds up and explodes over its majority. Arguably my favorite song of 2018 and one that lets you immerse yourself in its atmosphere and natural flows.

Theo Katzman - My Heart is Dead (Rock/Power-Pop)
From the 2017 album "Heartbreak Hits"

Though the live version is arguably better, the recorded version is fine. It's a simple song, nothing groundbreaking, but every once in awhile, I just find this sort of thing refreshing. Also, I truly dig Theo's voice. |

Probably the better track off of the album and it certainly works fine on its own, but a full album of this made me extremely impatient and frustratingly bored. Again, this slowly building (even if resulting in nothing) and mostly atmospheric tune is pretty decent on its own.

October All Over had a great reception, so I'll rec something a little more out there. 9 minutes split into three distinct section with all kinds of genres mixing. It's no metal, but just as intense emotionally. |
ArsMoriendi
01.01.19 | "Nica Libres at Dusk"
More mellow indie from neeka, who woulda guessed! But on a more serious note, the guitar part is actually engaging, which is cool. The vocals are pretty bland, but not too intrusive. Something about the echoing makes this song feel like it's from the future. Future indie folk? lol But yeah, this is alright enough. WAIT last minute cello? +0.2 for that.

01.02.19 | Ben Howard - Nica Libres at Dusk
Beautiful production and arrangement here, I can really get on board with the way those plucked arpeggios gradually pick up momentum. The high notes really resonate too, and the atmosphere is sublime. Love how it starts out moody and then takes flight. Not convinced by the vocals but they don't detract much either. Also, the last minute isn't really my thing - I get the feeling of release it's going for, and it's certainly well executed, but for some reason I don't get much out of it.

01.02.19 | 2. The Moss Beneath the Snow - Panopticon - 3.9 I feel that I am bad at appropriately judging post-rock, because it's always so pretty to me. This one is pretty good too! the instrumental section is pleasant and immersive, but I think it really shines about 9 minutes in when the vocals kick in. It may not be the most impressive performance but it fits the music so well, it's like an empathetic voice. The acoustic guitar in this passage is probably my favorite part of the entire song. I like it. |

01.06.19 | "Famous Prophets (Stars)"
16 mins damn... my first Car Seat Headrest song is gonna be a long one I guess. So far he's got the typical indie voice and it's just bass in the background hmmm. Wait, the original was 6 mins shorter? Hmmm "I'm not gonna end up a nervous wreck like that people who end up nervous recs" is this a stream of consciousness instead of actual lyric writing or what? Well it has a bit of that noise pop flair in the guitar work that I guess is pretty neat. I kinda wonder how this version is different from the original other than the obvious length. I do kinda of like this though.... I appreciate the variety. At this point, I feel like it's trying SUPER HARD to be emotional though with that mellow piano part lead into the heavy guitar, but meh I'm too jaded for that honestly.

My Heart is Dead - I'm with Ars here, this is like opening a portal to 90s radio rock. Cyclical, dude. 2.8
"Famous Prophets (Stars)" - Damn, according to the comments I have to listen for 13 minutes before my soul runs away. *looks at time* Oh still 10 minutes to go. I'm not sure I can make it, man. Why does the singer sound so bored? Ok, we gotta go back, got it, man.
This bit now sounds a little fuzzy like Sparklehorse, that's good. Well, that was over quick, they apparently want to use the next five minutes on a bass line instead. Oooh at 7:00 this sounds like a build-up. Could be good. Bring me that sonic explosion!
Stop saying the ocean washed over your brain we get it, it's not that deep. Next step is a double vocal layer, ok they need the bored guy to speak over the song, I'm not sure why. What, this is the climax at 9:00? Weak.
Back to piano chords and he sounds a lot whinier now. Yeah, I hate this part. Only 2 minutes to go! Yeah we're building up again, but I'm promised this time it will be awesome. Got that 5 rating ready! 1 minute. Testing that hi-hat. OHHHH HERE WE GOOOO. Yeah ok it's pretty good. Wut it's over already and now it becoms a classic rock song with a woman speaking of her childhood. 3 |

This is brief, which made it WAY easier to appreciate. I don't know what's with you guys and 8 minute songs that are repetitive and go absolutely nowhere, but thank god this wasn't that. His voice is mellow and clear and while the guitar is fairly bland, the backup vocals help keep my attention. Oh wait, there's piano now. Good choice as well. The lyrics use Charles Shultz and his characters Charlie and Lucy as a launching point for some emotional blah blah. Okay, that's creative actually, but -.1 for not incorporating Linus, the best character.

Theo Katzmann - "My Heart is Dead": Thanks, now my ears are dead. I apologize but this stuff is just not for me at all.
2.1/5
Car Seat Headrest - "Famous Prophets (Stars)": Now don't get me wrong, I love this album "to death", but this is one of the cuts from there that was truly longer than it should have been. There are lots of great segments, yes, but they don't quite fit together like I'd want them to.

"Etta James"
Wait this isn't a tribute to 60s R&B star Etta James? It's just a love song with Etta maybe playing in the background in the song's story? Ugh, this reminds me of when pop songs randomly reference older musicians just because it makes them selves look cool (such as "Moves like Jagger" by Train or "Marvin Gaye" by Charlie Puth) Sorry, I really dislike this. Also, it's otherwise just some bland radio-friendly rock ballad.

Well...I have the album 5'd ;] This song is a little weird out of the album flow to me, as I find it less a towering epic a more a interesting twist in a cohesive tracklist. That said, awesome track. 01.11.19 | Nica Libres at Dusk - opens up with vocals that make me feel like I'm in a some smooth-voiced hippy introducing me to some cool drugs and trying some hindu meditation techniques... nice. Digging the ambient guitars in the background, they sound like whales. But now I realise that the hippy does have some shit to talk about. Though I have no idea what about. Maybe I really do need be doing some high hindu meditating to understand, as it is it's all too vague for my 9am, corporate job-working, -20 celsius outside environment. I should probs try listening to these things at other places than work. EDIT: is it song about loss? a terrible accident? I'm imagining Mr. Howard is grieving over a loved one who died in a plane crash coming back from a vacation in Cuba, but is instead imagining that they decided to stay there and are at peace in paradise. 01.12.19 | "Portrait of Linda in Three Colors, All Black"
Sounds pretty good, it's like a jam. Not sure what's so challenging about this honestly. I mean it's "off key" but clearly on purpose in a way that's structured to fit her off notes. Almost natural in a way. Man at this point it sounds like she's getting fucked hard. The guitar's tone is nice, but otherwise a bit under utilized. Drums are cool. This has a lot going for it. Thank god for Butcher recs.

01.12.19 | "is it song about loss? a terrible accident? I'm imagining Mr. Howard is grieving over a loved one who died in a plane crash coming back from a vacation in Cuba, but is instead imagining that they decided to stay there and are at peace in paradise. Or something. 🤔"
no idea, love this interpretation though |
RunOfTheMill
01.14.19 | The Moss Beneath the Snow - I don't think I'll ever quite love a post-rock song. They're always nice when it's on, but it is ever so rare that I feel truly engaged in a song - even less an album where songs tend to meld together into one cohesive unit but still relentlessly passive. This one is no exception - a cool organ sound ploughs out for ten minutes and some smooth guitar licks accompany some nice atmosphere. I imagine a warm winter day, the kind where the snow gets kinda sticky but it feels fresh beneath those wool layers and all. The lyrics may require some context, but I see it as an ode to disappearing winters, a nod to global warming? I don't see the winter in this case as a an imminent doom, but rather see the singer watching the snow melting in the same way they'd be watching over their mother on her deathbed. The post-rock answer to Childish Gambino's Feels Like Summer (weird comparison, but it makes sense when it comes to the message? idk lol i am rambling). It is nice, but I can't quite remember much even after a couple of listens, and I'll give it points for making me pensive and for my own personal love of winter - 3.5/5 |

01.14.19 | Ariadne - I can't say I'm a fan of these vocals, the style has always irked me and it is unfortunately the focal point of the song it seems. The lyrics are not bad, it makes me think of the isolation and paranoia that an individualistic society can bestow on someone and how that manifests itself in the public mindset. Relevant in today's divisive socio-political environment, but I don't appreciate the singer's tone in that ending poem where in which he seems above all the crap, all high and mighty - the end is nigh and it'll be all *our* fault. Maybe I'm taking it too personally, but bitch don't act like you won't feel it too or like you don't have apart in it. The violins are quite nice, it adds to a pretty spectacular ending, but the song is quite lost on my by that point - 2.5/5 |

Atmosphere and flute hmmmm. And... then thrashing drums. Weird voice, it makes me think of a dwarf (mythical dwarf) on cocaine. Like Gimli... I've been watching the extended cut of Lord of the Rings recently, don't mind me.

Clearly, these guys think they're Kraftwerk. I do like the direction this went in, it's pleasant and keeps itself going in different directions. I can't help but think this is krautrock inspired post-punk revival though, like LCD Soundsystem. Like a lot of poppier stuff picked that good though, this is overstaying its visitng by a few mins. 6. Famous Prophets (Stars) - Car Seat Headrest - 3.8 what a behemoth of an indie rock song. But it didn't drag for me in the least, maybe because I'm sitting in the school's writing center waiting for class. From the first few minutes the song had emotionally impacted me, and I can't quite put my finger on why... maybe the entire relationship thing, maybe even the underlying faith thing... it caused a deep impression in my chest for a little while. I already rec'd my 2018 SOTY back in April, and my first rec of this month was my runner-up... so here's the song that rounds out my top 3! A moving, thought-provoking jazz rap odyssey about the effects drugs can have on users and friends/family thereof. |

01.18.19 | 10. West Coast - Daz Dillinger - 2.8 This album is fucking 30 tracks, jesus christ. And that album cover, this dude's stuck in '03. This song is stuck in '96. It's really not a terrible track though, the beat is good, and he has a fantastic voice. That feature on the chorus blows though.
11. Opening - Plini - 3.1 Kinda shreddy, kinda mathy. Not a huge fan of wankery in music, but those strings are a nice touch. From about the first minute to the second minute is my favorite part of this track for sure.
12. Portrait of Linda in three colours, all black.. - Sonny Sharrock - 3.5 Well, this is a unique listen... I don't think It is my sound, but I can say that I certainly appreciate it.
13. Dead - Husky Loops - 3.8 Oh damn, this one is fun as hell.
14. Premature Invocation - A Forest of Stars - 3.3 I listened to the first few tracks of this album earlier this year and kind of hated it, his vocals are just the worst. But this track uses the strengths of his voice to great effects.
15. Ullswater - Hookworms - 3.8 Alright, this rules. Added to my roadtrip playlist
16. I Came Back To Bitch - L7 - 2.4 This is okay I guess. I like the band, but eh. I like the guitar 2:15 in.

Leaves - Oh I heard this album a lot. This isn't a favourite though, I think it drags a bit. Also the lyrics are too grounded for me - do more time machine stuff! Still quality of course. That soaring part, delicious. 3.9 |

01.24.19 | 20. Kuroi Tamago - Shinsei Kamattechan - 2.8 Hm. This one will have to sit for a while. It's certainly interesting at least.
21. Shot by Both Sides - Magazine - 3.9 Yeah. This rules.
22. Orange Peeler - Horse Jumper of Love - 3.6 Really nice indie rock song, hate the band name though
23. Cadmium (Live) - Pinegrove - 3.3 I always forget what this song sounds like, but I enjoy it every time I hear it.
24. Leaves - The Gathering - 2.9 I'm not digging the chugginess of the guitars. Or the symphonic metal parts. The guitar at 3:30 and 15 seconds after that is really the only time I liked the wankery. Her voice is lovely, I just wish the music was more.... subtle I guess?
25. F(r)iends - Avantdale Bowling Club - 4.2 Oh shit. 30 seconds in and I love it. I've never heard of this group(?) but god damn I wish I did. Wonderful. |

01.25.19 | Gameun Deut - there is a song in here and I realy can't quite make it out. Most of the time, it feels like I'm hearing a bunch of hazy flashbacks to many other pieces of music that I can't quite pin a name to. Like I hear a cool guitar riff and I have no diea what song it's from but then I follow it with a keyboard section that I also can't quite name, so on and so forth. So in the end, this is really just a jumbalya of sounds.
But man.
These are some nice sounds. Like really nice. The cokctail of effects and passages really makes for something unique, if not entirely memorable only due to the very nature of the track tho. I really like it when it's one tho. Might have to check out the album. - 3.7/5 |

01.25.19 | My Heart is Dead - this is definitely a song. It ain't bad but it does not inspire much for me. There's that breakdown in the middle of the song which is the ebst part and Theo shows off some cool vocal chops. Super cheesy lyrics, but that's alright, I can enjoy a cheap supermarket cheddar for lunch. I guess it's the style, just superficial poppy rock. I would like to note the credits list in the video. While Theo plays generic drums and guitar, his buddies are playing FENDER bass and WURLITZER piano. I could make a snarky comment about brands but nah. I just think it's a little silly. - 2.5/5 |

RunOfTheMill
01.25.19 | famous prophets (stars) - holy FUCK i hated that piano part. I can usually dig a really long song that takes it's time or uses that space to put in a bunch of cool ideas, but this is the epitome of a track that did NOT need to be 16 minutes long. Like 5 minutes in, it coulda just did a Hey Jude and I would hav ebeen pretty happy not bad three point five outta five. But no, he had to but this sappy "ocean washes over your brain" and paino ballad. His voice sounds so fucking bored and it's so grating and I really can't care for the fake deep lyrics. I like cheesy music. I like my fair share of piano ballads. I did not like this. I guess it kinda gets better with the outro, the smashing drums, loud guitar chords and the guy actually sounds excited for one with his wailing. but then it is kinda ruined by this woman reciting about a monologue on love and childhood. But her childhood. I can relate to someone talking about themselves irl, it feels super pretentious to insert that in popular music.
could you believe I listened to this twice? - 1.8/5 |

01.26.19 | "Cadmium (Live)"
Very indie so far. So this sounds like radio pop kinda. Man, that bass kinda sucks hard if I'm being real. It's just like playing a scale... these guys are really trying hard to stretch minimal ideas. I guess the effort is admirable. +.2 for effort.

01.26.19 | "Leaves"
I recently heard Meat Puppets' album Mirage and there was a song on it called "Leaves" too, and it was my least favorite song on the album by far lol. Oh, it's symphonic metal with female vocals... I've actually heard 2 symphonic metal albums back when I didn't this album of the Month thingy with a group of people. Yup... this is metal alright. I know this sounds closeminded or whatever and you've all goofed on me before.... but I don't get this kinda music. It's like stale and stuck up seeming by nature. Like all of the epicness of actual classical music, but like for people who like things to be "badass" and "rad" thrown into the mix. I don't get it. :(
2.5/5 |
ArsMoriendi
01.26.19 | "F(r)iends"
The rapping fine. The drums are decent, the saxophone is decent. Damn, I see a bass player, but I don't hear the bass. Poor mixing? He needs to stop trying to sing though, he has like a gross rasp. His rapping is WAY better. Music is underwhelming, which is saying a lot because I usually give jazz picks higher scores. The anti-drug message is well written though I think. +.3 for the lyrics.
2.9/5
"The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra"
This one's only a minute in and it's already intense. Hmmmmm. Cool voice tricks. I like the bluesy atmosphere and guitars. Sputnik has her tagged drone and experimental, but let's be REALLY honest: this is blues rock. I guess maybe her other songs aren't? Regardless, this is actually super awesome.

The Mysterious Vanishing of Electra: This is a beautful time of sinister women. Not so much in love with this as many 'nikkers, but it's the good stuff. 3.6
Over and Over and Over: Hey, this should be a RATM song. Then maybe the guitar would pack some punch, dammit.

01.31.19 | 1973 - The lyrics are really clever. Really really clever. I'm impressed with how clever they are. But I'm also impressed on how they didn't fly over my head. Apart from the Peanuts references (had to Google Charles Schultz sorry), a lot of this was relatable and the transitions between thoughts were sublime. My girl Lucy waits for me to bend my knee - But the diamond doesn't shin and I can barely make the payments on our telephone ring" mmmmm that's so good. It takes some skill to write lyrcis that are both clever and perfectly understandable to an oblivious bozo such as myself. the music is nice too, he has a ncie voice, can't say much else about it. He has a ncie convincing voice. But the lyrics, man... - 3.8/5 |

01.31.19 | "Crybaby"
Is this what passes as punk now? If this came out in the 90s, everyone would just call this alternative rock. It's far from bad, but I wasn't expecting something so soft when I read "punk." Hmmm. Her voice is nice enough though. It reminds me Carrie Brownstein of Sleater-Kinney.
3.6/5
Also, there's no song for today. C'mon people! |
ArsMoriendi
01.31.19 | "Why do Tool fans get shit when stuff like this exists"
Because Tool fans take themselves super seriously like "HOW DARE YOU INSULT MAYNARD'S EYELID I'LL MURDER YOU" or "FUCK YOU MAYNARD FOR MAKING AN ALBUM WITH A PERFECT CIRCLE I WANTED TOOL YOU FUCK!"
MJK himself said he hated his fans. |
RunOfTheMill
01.31.19 | Terminus - so we've got three different parts. I won't say much about the first one: the dissonant riffing, pulsating base and rather flat vocals really don't inspire much for me. The kind of post-punk schlock I can never get behind, and definitely the weakest segment. It then transitions into this rad build-up up thing-a-mabob. The guitar riff and rhythm are pretty great in spite of it mostly repeating the same things. When the violin juts in and slowly overtakes the guitar, the track definitely shines. It's so dramatic. Images in my head are of a prisoner running away from a Cold siberian gulag, with the shouts of soldiers and dogs in the distance while she clasps onto a cloth with a frozen loaf of stale bread as her only keepsake. It feels so precarious. And the way it ends with the reverbed solo violins... perhaps she met a grim fate. Nice. The last part is much different, a jazzy pyschedelic jam. Love the drums and the way the synth branches off the slick guitar lines. Not as evocative as that second part, but a pleasure to listen to. It brings to mind some aquatic feelings, if only for that cool synth sound. Like I should be chilling in a bubble in that underwater city from The Phantom Menace. But no Gungans. And definitely no Jar Jar. Great track - 4/5 |
