| A7X: A Mildly Controversial Ranking
I've seen two new A7X rankings in the past week so I figured it's time I had my mildly controversial say. | 7 | | Avenged Sevenfold Sounding the Seventh Trumpet
Recorded when they were all 18 and still in school, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" shows some very clear glimpses of the potential the band has, while not being a "good" album per se. The record does show hints at future experimentation, and the opener and "Warmness on the Soul" are great songs in their own right. | 6 | | Avenged Sevenfold Hail to the King
Hated to the point of ridiculousness, I'm not going to pretend that this is a great album by any means. Metallica sound alikes aside however, the band does do some great things with the explosive "Planets" and "Requiem," while "Acid Rain" proves to be a potent sci-fi ballad. Just do away with "This Means War" and "Doing Time" and this would be considerably better. | 5 | | Avenged Sevenfold Nightmare
A great emotional tribute to the Rev, "Nightmare" is still the most uneven album they've put out. With astounding highs like (one of my personal A7X favorites) "Save Me" and the mournful "Tonight the World Dies," and frustrating lows like "Danger Line" and "Victim," it's still a great album to jam if you're down or in an eclectic mood. | 4 | | Avenged Sevenfold Waking the Fallen
Their original claim to fame, "Waking the Fallen" has held up incredibly well with age. Arguably their heaviest album, A7X infused melodic elements and clean vocals that mark a serious improvement from it's predecessor. "Chapter Four" is apocalyptic in scope, and "I Won't See You Tonight" is a devastating emotional epic. There really isn't much filler on here, I've heard people describe pretty much every song on here as one of their favorites. If that doesn't signal a great album, I don't know what does. | 3 | | Avenged Sevenfold The Stage
A wonderful surprise by the band, and a successful return to form. The title track perfectly begins as a callback to "Hail to the King"'s style before fleshing out into a much more fully formed prog sound that dominates the rest of the album, making the transition for fans all the more obvious. Other highlights include the massive "Exist," beautiful "Roman Sky," and the strangely catchy ballad "Angels." | 2 | | Avenged Sevenfold City of Evil
As massive and ambitious a work as any, City of Evil blasts through genres and styles with such a vigor that it's genuinely surprising how well the album flows together. Each track forms its own personality, as well as boosting all the others in terms of quality. There's something for everyone here, fast, heavy, slow, emotional, and just plain strange. It's a work of art. | 1 | | Avenged Sevenfold Avenged Sevenfold
Undoubtedly the most divisive album they've released, I love it for the pure experimentation and musicality of it all, as well as a number of personal reasons and experiences tied to it. See review for full opinion. | |

01.11.17 | Maybe not as controversial as some others, still wanted my opinion out there because isn't that what Sputnik's for?
Besides trolling I mean | neekafat
01.11.17 | It's okay, we'll make it through this together | neekafat
01.11.17 | You should man. It's really the summation of all their strengths | neekafat
01.11.17 | It's most certainly not metalcore, at least not as I understand it. Lemme know whatcha think! | dmp3131
01.11.17 | I actually really like 1 as well. It would probably go 3 or 4 for me, with CoE as 1, Nightmare as 2, and WtF ranking 3rd or 4th depending on the day. The Stage was good too but it hasn't sunk in enough to say for sure. | SteakByrnes
01.11.17 | They haven't been metalcore since Waking The Fallen, which is their best imo | neekafat
01.11.17 | I can respect both those opinions tbh, the Top 5 are all really solid albums | SteakByrnes
01.11.17 | Their work from Waking The Fallen to Nightmare is really solid for me, rest is either meh or laughably bad | DominionMM1

01.11.17 | much love for 1, despite the fact I shouldn't | Drifter
01.11.17 | Man I think Nightmare is consistent all the way through. It's probably tied for 2nd place for me. How is "Victim" a frustrating low? | neekafat
01.11.17 | @Dominion because it rules
@Asleep, yeah bro it's a classic! | neekafat
01.11.17 | Victim just feels so cheesy and forced, especially with that female vocalist hovering around the whole time | tellah
