A7X: A Mildly Controversial Ranking

I've seen two new A7X rankings in the past week so I figured it's time I had my mildly controversial say.
7Avenged Sevenfold
Sounding the Seventh Trumpet

Recorded when they were all 18 and still in school, "Sounding the Seventh Trumpet" shows some very clear glimpses of the potential the band has, while not being a "good" album per se. The record does show hints at future experimentation, and the opener and "Warmness on the Soul" are great songs in their own right.
6Avenged Sevenfold
Hail to the King

Hated to the point of ridiculousness, I'm not going to pretend that this is a great album by any means. Metallica sound alikes aside however, the band does do some great things with the explosive "Planets" and "Requiem," while "Acid Rain" proves to be a potent sci-fi ballad. Just do away with "This Means War" and "Doing Time" and this would be considerably better.
5Avenged Sevenfold
Nightmare

A great emotional tribute to the Rev, "Nightmare" is still the most uneven album they've put out. With astounding highs like (one of my personal A7X favorites) "Save Me" and the mournful "Tonight the World Dies," and frustrating lows like "Danger Line" and "Victim," it's still a great album to jam if you're down or in an eclectic mood.
4Avenged Sevenfold
Waking the Fallen

Their original claim to fame, "Waking the Fallen" has held up incredibly well with age. Arguably their heaviest album, A7X infused melodic elements and clean vocals that mark a serious improvement from it's predecessor. "Chapter Four" is apocalyptic in scope, and "I Won't See You Tonight" is a devastating emotional epic. There really isn't much filler on here, I've heard people describe pretty much every song on here as one of their favorites. If that doesn't signal a great album, I don't know what does.
3Avenged Sevenfold
The Stage

A wonderful surprise by the band, and a successful return to form. The title track perfectly begins as a callback to "Hail to the King"'s style before fleshing out into a much more fully formed prog sound that dominates the rest of the album, making the transition for fans all the more obvious. Other highlights include the massive "Exist," beautiful "Roman Sky," and the strangely catchy ballad "Angels."
2Avenged Sevenfold
City of Evil

As massive and ambitious a work as any, City of Evil blasts through genres and styles with such a vigor that it's genuinely surprising how well the album flows together. Each track forms its own personality, as well as boosting all the others in terms of quality. There's something for everyone here, fast, heavy, slow, emotional, and just plain strange. It's a work of art.

Avenged Sevenfold

Undoubtedly the most divisive album they've released, I love it for the pure experimentation and musicality of it all, as well as a number of personal reasons and experiences tied to it. See review for full opinion.
