| indie games
fellow gamers how do u do ????
nintendo just dropped a rando direct about some upcoming indie releases and figured id make a list because there arent enough of those as is. list is some indies i have enjoyed over the years and maybe some words who knows.
what are your favorite indie games? what are your favorite hidden gems? what are your least favorite indie games youve never played but like to rag on because someone you know who isnt a neckbeard dungeon dweller with cum stained figurines has played? is pixel art really art? who is todd howard? leave ur comments in the section below and use promo code "whats good ramon" for 15% of ur next gamma labs purchase | 1 | | Irk Bread and Honey
Celeste
aye man this game was proper good. super tight platforming, super speedrunner friendly, also not friendly. the fact the dudebro theo has a real life instagram account is dope | 2 | | Sun of the Blind Skullreader
Pocket Rumble
fun little fighting game if you are too much of a pussy to play a real fighting game like smash 4 or senran kagura | 3 | | SALES SALES
Owlboy
really pretty little number, gameplay is a bit inconsistent and sometimes boring but every frame looks like a wallpaper/painting/nice and soundtrack is dope toooooo | 4 | | Cheem Downhill
Darkwood
never thought a top down survival horror game could ever make me bung my jorts. probably the best survival horror game ive ever played. lore is muddied by needless esotericism but if u r a big stalker nut like me this one will prolly pitch a tent | 5 | | This Will Destroy You Another Language
Sunless Sea
sorta an exploratory rendition of something like darkest dungeon without the excess. cool trade stories, cool visuals, hard | 6 | | Krallice Diotima
The Shrouded Isle
one of the most exceptional novelty indies ive played. you run a little village (cult) and your villagers have specific "virtues" and through deduction and/or failure you have to sacrifice them one by one to tchornobog and if he isnt happy then neither will u be. gloriously immersive overall design for a shallow yet entertaining ride. | 7 | | Darren Korb Pyre
Bastion
and any game released by supergiant really. bastion remains the go to for me but they are all visual/auditory spectacles with some solid and inventive gameplay mechanics. big ups | 8 | | Pantera Metal Magic
Hollow Knight
best indie ive played in forever. im not huge on metroidvanias but the movement options and freeform platforming as a result of some downwell-esque combat mechanics make for some gloriously fun action segments. game is ridiculous huge for something of its price. slated to pump another 10-20 hours into a game ive already put 30 hours into due to an excess of free dlc and replayability. buy it dumbass ur mum fat | 9 | | Wiki Lil Me
Wizard of Legend/The Binding of Isaac/Dead Cells/Crypt of the Necrodancer/Crawl/Enter the Gungeon/recent rogue-likes in general
what is there really to say about the current age of rogue-likes that hasn't been penned by the mighty filip miucin? this genre isn't at all for me but i'll be damned if i said i haven't deeply enjoyed the creativity being pumped into new rogue-likes. it'd seem unless you are completely burned out on the genre, any rogue-like aggregating a 7.5 or higher is probably worth a purchase given the general pricing to content ratios. | 10 | | Soundgarden Badmotorfinger
Rivals of Aether
probably my pick for the best multiplayer indie game that currently exists. im certainly biased towards the smash and fgc scenes so this probably doesn't surprise anyone who knows that. the devs are on the grind 24/7 taking community feedback and applying it immediately. the game knows how to implement heavy characters into a competitive platform fighter meta. character designs are unparalleled in the genre. soundtrack is a bit stale but everything else be straight fire my dude of vine based vernacular | 11 | | Brain Resin If Pain Persists
Journey/Abzu/Inside
im kinda lumping Inside in with journey and abzu because i feel it absolutely fails as a conventional puzzler but works wonders as a walking simulator type. journey does manage to work some nifty puzzles into the game with a lot more poise, but i feel inside was immersive enough (pacing and puzzle shortcomings aside) to feel as intriguing to explore. abzu and journey are the real winners here but inside is still very very dope if u let it be | 12 | | Erebus Enthroned Temple Under Hell
What Remains of Edith Finch
if u havent played this, idk if i could trust u with semi-sensitive info like my mother's middle name or sauces that i can tolerate but would rather u not | 13 | | Faraquet Anthology 1997-98
Minecraft
"haha sick meme" but honestly man, this was the shit back in the beta days. havent played it much as of late but the vanilla game is still a romp. kinda wish i could go back to playing tekkit with friends for hours, building quarries and getting bored reading wikis and eventually moving onto something easier like solitaire | 14 | | Many Blessings Ripe Earth
Nidhogg 1
havent played 2 and it looks a bit gross but dam sun nidhogg 1 is still one of the best party games that is in the exist. who has a longer dick? doesnt matter, settle it with nidhogg. who has the hottest mom? doesnt matter, nidhogg. nidhogg? nidhogg. | 15 | | Many Rooms There is a Presence Here
Obduction
i was really late to games like myst and riven and thusly had to exploit the internet due to a new found lack of attention span developed in a more current generation. obduction was cool because i was able to finish it without a 64 page notepad and fourty three extra iq points. a fun time if you like old school adventure games and those original 3d first person puzzlers. | 16 | | Ondatropica Baile Buacanero
Samorost/Machinarium/Gorogoa
gorogoa is kinda a tiny bit odd one out ish but all three are essentially rooted in the point and click puzzler mindset. all three (and all iterations of samorost) are spectacles visually and sonically and all three have remarkably intriguing (if not vague bar possible singular end goals) narratives. gorogoa is definitely my favourite of the three and if you havent played it, please do so before watching any footage. | 17 | | Soilwork Natural Born Chaos
Thimbleweed Park/I Have No Mouth, and I Must Scream
as for point and clicks reminiscent of the monkey island vein, these are two ive played more recently that were kinda really good. no mouth dropped in 95 and thimbleweed in 2017, but luckily for me terrible toybox (devs behind thimbleweed) were adoring enough of the old goldies that the transition between the two games was jarring more in terms of themes and narrative than actual gameplay for the most part. no mouth is also pretty fucking terrifying and i think its about as good a rendition of ellison's piece as one could hope for in a video game. | 18 | | FKA Twigs EP2
Furi
the darling of people who use terms like "gameplay mechanics" and "intuitive design" and "M U L T I F A C E T E D B O S S R U S H" in day to day use, furi is prolly the best action boss rush shmup indie you can play rn from ur home or from ur office doesnt even matter technology has come so far ;)
but yea they aint lying, cant believe its not butter | 19 | | Common Holly Playing House
Oxenfree/Night in the Woods
a much funnier person made the comparison between these two games already but its hard not to talk about one without mentioning the other. pretty stellar talking simulators about growing pains, socialising, fear of the unknown, and beer pong | 20 | | Ulcerate Vermis
Terraria
basically 2D minecraft with a fuck tonne of tekkit mods jammed together but cohesive and balanced and fun and and and and and and it gud yung blud | 21 | | Lionel Richie Coming Home
Diablo 3
this isnt an indie game im just excited its coming to the switch | 22 | | The Gromble Jayus
Cave Story
this games in my library. havent finished it. probably wont. dont really like it all that much at all. but thats more a byproduct of not really liking metroidvanias, and mechanically/thematically/designelly, this game is absolute gold. | 23 | | Kikagaku Moyo Mammatus Clouds
Pillars of Eternity/Wasteland II/Tyranny/Planescape/Obsidian Entertainment's RPGs kinda
not even sure if a company of this size and rep should really be classified as an indie developer but given the clout and perceived image, ill let em slide. wasteland ii is the obvious odd one out here due to it not entirely being an obsidian property and having some of its own fun features leaning more towards survival xcom-esques but all these games are unified by massively detailed lore and immersive worlds and if u like reading and are a nerd why u not playing these rn nerd | 24 | | Coma Detox Volatile Debasement
Amnesia: The Dark Descent/Penumbra: Overture
the circa 2012 youtube darlings, and with good reason. the atmosphere in both games is impressively palpable even to this day thanks to some incredible lighting work. while other games in the respective series felt like they fell flat, these are almost classics at this point. if i werent so clued into how the AI works in Amnesia, i have no doubt the game would make me poo a big one in the present day given the right circumstances | 25 | | YeYe Hue Circle
The Stanley Parable/The Beginner's Guide
these games are veritable goldmines of philosophy, pseudo-philosophy, and yomi +47 quasi-pseudo-philosophy that'll make you go "oh damn need to think about that again" or maybe even "lmao this is shit". the beginner's guide is particularly touching to me, though id highly recommend anyone to try either at their leisure for a really ??? time | 26 | | Saviour First Light To My Death Bed
Papers Please/Cashbags
papers please is so so dope conceptually. kinda puts you either in a constant state of pressure as you try and ethics ur way out of deporting a pregnant woman, or a constant state of power as u deport a pregnant woman. cashbags is a lighthearted free alternative if u dont wanna feel like a monster/power fiend | 27 | | Inclemency Inclemency
Into the Breach/FTL
i know, i know! this dumping method is dumb but im lazy fuck off. here are two ridiculously dope, balls hard turn based game things with near opposite design given the selected genre. FTL's focus on in-battle maintenance vs breach's post-war customisation, and a max vs min approach to general combat makes for two very different and kinda unique experiences of what essentially boils down to the same sort of numbers game. it feels like positioning and rationing are the core differences and its a very different contrast to what we are used to seeing from most strategy developers afaic | 28 | | Duster Transmission, Flux
To the Moon
i feel like this one has a higher than average propensity to be a shit time depending on your patience for games revolving around twists and tugs on the strings but if you like a warped narrative and some spunky characters then this is a bit of an infectious romp | 29 | | Nelly Suit
Ori and the Blind Forest
got into this game after Ori and Sein became a playable duo in Rivals of Aether and boy oh boy is this game SLICKKKKKKK. feels like its taken the momentum-based pull of games like N+ and the visuals of a classic Rayman game and said "yoooooo i got a new blender". a bit sad someitmes, a bit tense sometimes, a bit "whoah man", you only have ur money and time to lose | 30 | | Antemasque Antemasque
Path of Exile
was super apprehensive about featuring a game developed by a company thats since been acquired by tencent but its a kiwi game and its by a small studio and its so so good someone pls play it with me. Grinding Gear Games really know their shit about iso arpgs and a lot of this game feels like all the trappings and trimmings of arpgs of old with the fluff shaved off and the torments/end rift content punched in as introductory, sorta like a rite of passage. expect your budding first time hardcore adventurer to get two-shotted by a hailrake mere minutes into the experience | 31 | | Bob Marley and The Wailers Exodus
Steamworld Dig 1 & 2 & Heist
all of these games are so baller in that annoying way where i hate even thinking about playing any of them until i turn one on and accidentally lose 9 hours of my life | 32 | | Miyuki Fellow Citizen
Tacoma/Soma
these two games are pretty damn different for walking simulators centered around character identity, crisis, the misgivings of technological advancement, and corruption, told through flashbacks and the recordings or reactions of AI, set aboard exploratory vessels with hopes of space travel. both are heavy, and both are pretty different fundamentally in terms of narrative but they are also both really similar on paper so i flung them together because thats the trend rn | 33 | | Mastodon Crack the Skye
Vangers
probably the strangest racing rpg in existence, and that says a lot given the extensive history of the highly populated genre. it dropped in 98 but honestly, the aesthetic is so entirely singular that it feels like it could have been made yesterday. if you want to play something unlike anything youve ever played and have the patience to figure out a pretty grueling early game, this'll no doubt become one of the best things you finish. | 34 | | Kalafina Far on the Water
DUSK/Amid Evil
old school fps games have aged like wine afaic, and while i certainly understand critiques on what are often considered antiquated designs, i feel like old school level design and movement speed were much more accommodating of a higher skill ceiling as the result of movement options than a lot of current shooters so it really strokes my lemon to know there are some nutters out there trying to perfect the genre further. DUSK is a brutal romp through a backwater KKK infested pseudo Texas at light speed, and Amid Evil is Hexen 2018 redux kinda. both games are disgustingly fast and offer enough flexibility for damage-less clears at least on mid-to-high difficulties. they feel absolutely incredible to play and honestly if u like guns u will like these | 35 | | Future of Forestry Travel II
Battlefield 3
this is also not an indie title but it is so good and i wish noshahr canals tdm ruled my life like it did back in the day | 36 | | Darkspace Dark Space II
Stardew Valley
i hate games like this so the fact ive put over 100 hours into this particular one is testament both to the game's quality and also my lack of ability to make correct judgements. its so fucking boring and its so good. if you hate farming and hate slowness and hate vegetables you will love this game. | |
ramon.
08.21.18 | cheaters will be vac banned | J() Alexander
08.21.18 | Celeste is fucking great.
My favorite indie game would be Yume Nikki but that one isn't going to be released for a Nintendo console any time soon... Or any other console from any other company. | SteakByrnes
08.21.18 | Hollow Knight, Rivals of Aether, lots of good shit on here my boi
Dust: An Elysian Tail is one of my favorite indie games, it's like a metroidvania style game with a cool plot and fun gameplay.
Crawl is another good one, like a dungeon crawling brawler with multiplayer | FearThyEvil
08.21.18 | Missing all SuperGiant's games | ramon.
08.21.18 | ive heard good things about yume nikki, will give it a spin!
never played dust, though i do have crawl and "any game released by supergiant really." on this list yo yo yo, good picks. crawl is such a party blast. | J() Alexander
08.21.18 | Cool! Just play the original (it's free, by the way), don't be confused and accidently play that new thing some random company made. | FearThyEvil
08.21.18 | Also I'm glad to see 23 on here considering PoE and Tyranny were great games and I absolutely consider New Vegas to be one of the best games i've ever played. | FearThyEvil
08.21.18 | I'm also stupid for not seeing the Supergiant Games mention at 7 I literally glanced right over it. My b | ramon.
08.21.18 | probably should have included NV though bethesda's financial support kinda pushed me over the edge. yeah it is a definite classic and it pains me how many people have played 3 but not NV.
haha no problemo dude, the list is a mess | FearThyEvil
08.21.18 | Yeah, bethesda scummy way of not paying them for the metacritic score because of their buggy engine is despicable. It's hilarious how Obisidan was given only a year and a half to make NV and bethesda were given like 5-6 for fallout 4 and NV is far far and away the better game. Fallout 4 was laughably bad in a lot of areas. | ramon.
08.21.18 | NV feels like the only fallout game post 2 that is a fallout game imo. Bethesda are so shit and I hate that I keep giving them money. | FearThyEvil
08.21.18 | I admit there's no other games like Bethesda when it comes to exploring an open-world like their games but they severely lack depth in writing, story, and character which is something that other rpgs have over them any day of the week. | ramon.
08.21.18 | Given NV exists, there isn’t really much preventing them from making the necessary changes. They have the budget. I’ve bought Skyrim on more consoles than I can count purely for the intensity of world detail. If they could work in some depth seen in NV and even some of the side quests in prior ES games, I’d be both stoked and hyped, skater | BlushfulHippocrene
08.21.18 | lol, nerd | DungeonBoy
08.21.18 | oof, i think i'm the only person who didn't like Bastion. It looks great, but that gameplay is just so bland.
Enjoyed: Axiom Verge, Inside, Salt and Sanctuary, Cosmic Star Heroine, Hollow Knight, Rogue Legacy, Adventures of Pip.
Did not enjoy: I am Setsuna, Bastion, Oxenfree.
On my list: Chasm, Owlboy, Celeste, Wizard of Legend | DungeonBoy
08.21.18 | I didn't realize walking simulators were a thing until I played Oxenfree. There is literally 0 skill required to play it, no puzzles, no platforming, you just walk around and talk to people. I have no interest in ever playing a game like that ever again. | ramon.
08.21.18 | blush u better watch ur tongue
can kinda understand that about bastion. i feel similarly about transistor but feel they nailed game feel in pyre. and yeah man, walking sims are almost like 3D visual novels of sorts. less about gameplay, more about experience. there have been a lot of good ones and a lot of bad ones and i can completely understand not enjoying the style. cheers for reminding me to hop on axiom verge and salt & sanctuary.
cheers for the ad revenue, jombroni. hadn't heard about yoku before your comment but it looks superb. and yes!!!!!! been wanting to check out a hat in time for a while, so stoked its getting a switch port. and yeah man, if you've been digging HK and Celeste, Ori is another superb platformer. has some of the best feeling movement controls ive yet tried in a game, and its stunning to boot. | Chortles
08.21.18 | great great list m'boy, lots of good stuff but more stuff i need to play. i've been absolutely thrashing Hollow Knight for the past few weeks and just beat it the other night, amazing game
some other faves that aren't already on here: Lisa the Painful/Joyful, Super Meat Boy (not the new versions with the awful soundtrack tho), Hyper Light Drifter and The Swapper. incredibly excited for HLD to hit switch but idt we have a release date yet?
also Darkwood sounds incredible but i've never ever hurd of it!!! added to wishlist x x x | ZombieToyDuck
08.21.18 | 24 is so fucking good, I still never got to finish it cause its so damn terrifying and I will only experience it at it's scariest. In a dark room with headphones on. | Sinternet
08.21.18 | oxenfree is absolutely incredible, def one of my favourites of the last few years
to the moon is the greatest indie game ever of course | DungeonBoy
08.21.18 | "oxenfree is absolutely incredible, def one of my favourites of the last few years"
like for real? I went into it knowing nothing and couldn't wait to finally finish it. I know that def team made a game about a talking cat or something in the city? same team, maybe not.. but wonder if it's any better | Tenshi
08.21.18 | Recently been pretty hardcore into the Metroid-esque games, as well as going back to actual Metroid games. 100% completed Hollow Knight and Axiom Verge, both incredible. Started a new one this week called Death's Gambit, but it's got a lot of issues. Decided to get over the awful art style and bought Salt and Sanctuary so we'll see how that goes.
Also tried a game called This Is the Police, but couldn't stomach the poor writing, super abundant typos and fuck ups, as well as the incredible lack of choice when giving the player strategy or agency. It's a "strategy" game with only one clear, workable path. All other strategies create instant failure, so it's an awfully designed faux-strategy game. | Sinternet
08.21.18 | i mean it has one of the best and most engrossing stories i've ever seen in a videogame. not only were the characters believable for their age (considering the games industry seems to shit the bed when creating teen characters), it has an incredible atmosphere , the soundtrack is awesome, it's beutifully and fluidly designed and it's actually eerie and psychological rather than jumpscares. It's one of the greatest examples for the case that video games can be art rather than solely amusement. | Tenshi
08.21.18 | As a huge fan of the original Fallouts, Icewind Dale, Baldur's Gate, Planescape: Torment, Arcanum, etc., I fell in love pretty instantly with Pillars of Eternity. But Pillars 2 has really not grabbed me. It feels like a chore to go back to. Same with Tyranny. Just can't get into them at all. Combat especially in Pillars 2 is a huge letdown. It's so slow. | Tenshi
08.21.18 | Outside of all that stuff tho, playing tonnes of Bayonetta rn, so good | OwMySnauze
08.21.18 | Axiom Verge
Deaths Gambit | DungeonBoy
08.21.18 | just checked out a couple screenshots of Pillars.. and it looks fantastic! Have you played Divinity? I just got it for 65% off on the psn weekly deals, and have already sunk wayyy to much time into it.
@OW Death's Gambit has been on my radar for quite some time. Does it live up to the hype? | Tenshi
08.21.18 | Nah, Death's Gambit is full of bugs and is a poor Souls and Metroid clone. Wait for patches and sale. | Yotimi
08.21.18 | Celeste is amazing. Up there with Braid for fave of all time | DungeonBoy
08.21.18 | Braid makes me think of that doco on netflix, Indie Game. You watch that dude? | Risodo
08.21.18 | Limbo is nice | Yotimi
08.21.18 | If its the one that focuses on super meatboy, braid, and FEZ, yeah i did see that | DungeonBoy
08.21.18 | Yeah man, it gave me a newfound respect for how small some of these teams are and how much they put into making some of these games. Really changed the way I look at indie games, and honestly because of watching it have pretty much only exclusively purchased and played indie games on my ps4. | Demon of the Fall
08.21.18 | Sounds like I should play some of these indie games supported/developed(?) by Obsidian. I’m so far out of the loop that I don’t know any of them yet. I could do with some new RPGs in my life. | Frivolous
08.21.18 | whats good ramon | LamboGD
08.21.18 | Even though I'm also well aware of how the AI in Amnesia works, it still terrifies me haha. I didn't find penumbra overture to be all that scary, but penumbra black plague is almost as scary as amnesia imo |
