Do sampled vocals not count as vocals? |
GhandhiLion
03.30.23 | The Avalanches tag is quite contentious not sure if I agree |
GhandhiLion
03.30.23 | "Do sampled vocals not count as vocals"
no, a lot of instrumental hip hop has sampled vocals |
GhandhiLion
03.30.23 | I'm also agnostic on that BADBADNOTGOOD album being instrumental hip hop. Perhaps it's more like jazz fusion influenced by hip hop. |
ArsMoriendi
03.30.23 | I’d said they do
Songs like Frontier Psychiatrist by Avalanches or like Six Days by DJ Shadow don’t feel like instrumental at all (DJ Shadow obviously still works tho since most of his stuff is vocal-less) |
GhandhiLion
03.30.23 | Yeah they definitely have a lot of songs that I'd call instrumental hip hop. I'll add them even though I'm unsure. |

Considering Wildflower has full on rapped verses, I absolutely consider SILY at least tangentially instrumental hiphop. Maybe more so from a sampling/plunderphonics perspective, but related nonetheless.
BADBADNOTGOOD, I mean, they did a whole album with Ghostface based on their style of music. Absolutely instrumental hiphop. |
GhandhiLion
03.30.23 | I don't see how them doing a collaboration album with Ghostface strengthens the argument that they are instrumental hip hop. Perhaps I haven't heard the right recordings by them. |
AlexKzillion
03.30.23 | i think yes for avalanches because they make instrumental hip hop/plunderphonics first and foremost, but will occasionally (maybe an understatement) have vocal features on their newer stuff, and is not someone a part of avalanches doing the vocals when there are vocals.
another interesting case would be mf doom. on the surface that sounds stupid but the dude dropped like eight instrumental mixtapes and generally has quite a few instrumental/plunderphonics-y tracks on all his albums |

ArsMoriendi
04.01.23 | tbh probably both, the album has 0 lyrics and lots of samples/hip hop sounds |
GhandhiLion
04.01.23 | Interesting, I'll give it a listen. It doesn't seem like hip hop from skimming it. |
