03.08.16 | I agree with this. Maybe one day their next album will actually come out. |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | Maybe baybe, maybe. Hopefully it does soon. |

03.08.16 | Musically speaking, Everything You Ever Wanted to Know About Silence melts faces, but the lyrics always made me squirm, with their blatant, aggressive misogyny. I'm glad Daryl fixed that problem and even addressed that it was a problem on Worship and Tribute. |
torts
03.08.16 | I'd switch 3 and 1 |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | I didn't want to address it blatantly because I always rant about the lyrics... But yeah. A big part of the reason Everything is lowered for me is because of the mysogyny and the slut-shaming. As a person who's been slut-shamed herself, it kinda hurts to read those lyrics. But, oh well. He fixed it with later albums and addressed the problem which was noble of him. But yeah, musically it does melt faces. |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | And @torts: no |

03.08.16 | Coloring Book was sooo good. |
MyNameIsPencil
03.08.16 | "you can lead a whore to water, but you bet she'll drink and follow orders"
yeah the lack of subtlety in the lyrics with "Everything" and their overtly misogynist vibes really makes me not listen to it a lot. Like it's one thing to be angry at women; I'm pretty sure almost every male has been to some degree at one brief point. But the levels showcased in the album honestly make me cringe |
Snake.
03.08.16 | yeah the lyrics are no doubt fucked up and i'd rather do without but it's the ferocity that makes it such an amazing album |
MyNameIsPencil
03.08.16 | that is very true, and I still enjoy the album, I just don't revisit it often |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.08.16 | 3 is 1 |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.08.16 | The lyrics are not misogynistic, a girl broke his heart, and his emotional state was complete cacophonous anger/ sadness. So he used the worst insults he could; very emotional album |
hesperus
03.08.16 | "He used the worst insults he could"
Gee, if only there was a word for thinking that the worst insult you can make towards a woman is that she has sex for money. |
MyNameIsPencil
03.08.16 | uh did you look at the lyrics closely? |

03.08.16 | Why don't you suck on the end of this dick that cums lead? |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | They are mysogynistic. The dude that says otherwise is probably biased by his macho-nature.
And nice one DinoJones lol |
torts
03.08.16 | band is very much so mysogynistic |
YetAnotherBrick
03.08.16 | not only are the lyrics on Silence misogynistic, some of them are downright terrible in general. Daryl improved SOOO much in that regard on Worship and Tribute. he basically forged a whole new inimitable style and started talking about shit that actually matters, when he wasn't making surreal word-paintings (que sera, erotic hurrah...) either style is better than the shit on Silence, though.
ranking is correct. band is the shit |
DinosaurJones
03.08.16 | I still love EYEWTKAS, but nowhere near as much as W&T. |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.08.16 | I think you're right, but its their best album. Just saw much raw emotion and melody |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.08.16 | W&T doesn't come close to the melodic superiority that is EYEWTKAS. I am biased tho because its one of my top20 albums ever; I really could care less about the lyrics. The music itself is amazing. But yea he is pretty mean on it |
anarchistfish
03.08.16 | 2 is nearly my favourite |
YetAnotherBrick
03.08.16 | "W&T doesn't come close to the melodic superiority that is EYEWTKAS."
dude what. there is so much more going on with melody on W&T, not to mention texture. Silence is cool but let's be honest, it's kind of a lot of heavy-soft-heavy-soft. W&T is like a whole new template, so many different tones and so many different sounds bursting out of the background. |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | Chill. Oh and ban yourself? Get yourself off of your fucking pedestal. |
hesperus
03.08.16 | Dude, even Daryl himself admits he went too far on that album. None of us are saying you're not allowed to enjoy it, we're just saying that there are certain hard-to-ignore aspects that we don't like about it. You don't need to cry "PC police!" every time someone points out that something you like is kinda shitty. |
Jots
03.08.16 | how does him criticizing your viewpoint put himself on a pedestal ... he's empathizing with some very unsavoury traits and claiming that not every album needs to, falsely or not, adopt certain politically correct credo in order to be enjoyable at base level. |
Jots
03.08.16 | "even Daryl himself admits he went too far on that album"
yeah, but is that to any artistic detriment? i'd argue not. |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | This is my opinion. Oh and sure, pull out the PC card. That's what they all do. I'm stating an opinion on behalf of the lyrics. He's shown that he's grown beyond that and it showed a way more mature side of the band as a WHOLE as the result. You can go on all day about how PC I am because of how I consider that the lyrics were mysoginistic on that record, but that doesn't change the fact that they are. Plus, I didn't say the album was bad as a result of the lyrics. I love that album and I even have it on fucking CD. The fact that I don't agree with the lyrics and criticize them shouldn't be seen as wrong. I just DON'T AGREE WITH THEM. If I were to NOT listen to music based on ME not agreeing with the lyrics I wouldn't listen to many other records as well! But, okay. I'm PC? Alright, I am. Fuck it. |
DinosaurJones
03.08.16 | It's possible to have discomfort about something and still enjoy it. It's also possible to talk to someone and get your point across without being an ass hat, but I guess that's too "pc" |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | ^^^^^^^^^10/10 |
Jots
03.08.16 | true, but in his description of the album I'm given the impression that the lyrics were his primary complaint about the album's quality. which contradicts that he is able to "have discomfort but still enjoy it", ya know? it's all in the wording |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | His? Who are you talking about? |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | I stated that it's still an amazeballs record, I just found the lyrics off putting at times. |
DinosaurJones
03.08.16 | No, I see what you're saying. Hell, I empathized with the lyrics when I was younger. They made me uncomfortable, but they were cathartic. I'm just sayin' that because pointing that the lyrics can be construed as misogynistic, and let's be honest, they are, can mar enjoyment of the record. It's more an observation than a critique. At least, that's how I interpreted it. |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | @Fourth: You're completely ignoring my comments then because I can't stress the fact that I do enjoy that record enough.
@Johnny: It's she. (in case you're talking about me) just to be clear. |
Jots
03.08.16 | when I said "his" I was responding to Dino regarding you |
Jots
03.08.16 | oops sorry. |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | it's aighttt haha |
Jots
03.08.16 | I remember this being discussed in another thread and I had a brain fart |
JigglyPDiddy
03.08.16 | hahaha brains fart it's okay |
Piglet
03.08.16 | I saw some peeps saying they couldn't look past the misogyny of The Notorious B.I.G. i mean what, the guy is rapping ad nauseum about robbing and killing people and all you're concerned about is how he hates bitches? |
DinosaurJones
03.08.16 | Well, to speak for America in general, violence and shit is totally cool. Seeing someone get their eye shot out on TV? No problem! Beheadings, amputation, etc? Yeah, that's all cool.
A boob? WHOA NOW, COVER THAT UP. THAT IS NOT OKAY.
Oh, the tits are on a severed torso? Okay, we're all clear, go ahead! |
Spacesh1p
03.08.16 | It's completely fair to be critical of the lyrics. Jig, you said yourself that you still love the album, so I fail to see your issue, Fourth. Maybe Jig's experience with the album is different as a result but I can name a million other reasons from current disposition to the weather to what day it is that can all play into how you experience an album. Interpretation is always subjective.
I mean, I'm not a National Socialist or even close to it but I can still jam NSBM and experience it in my own way. |
hesperus
03.08.16 | I dunno, maybe I'm alone in this, but lyrics actually can hurt the enjoyability of music for me. I wanted to like EYEWTKAS, but I just kept cringing every time one of those misogynistic lyrics reared its ugly head, and ultimately I couldn't get behind it. And I feel like that should be a legitimate reason not to like certain music. After all, the lyrics are a part of the music, aren't they?
But no, apparently that means I'm listening to music wrong and I just need to shut up that part of my brain whenever I put on my headphones. Like that woman from The Onion who took a break from being feminist to enjoy Say Yes to the Dress. |
DinosaurJones
03.08.16 | You're just too sensitive, hes. You need to understand that singing about calling women whores and beating them is okay as long as you don't actually do it.
/s |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.08.16 | Yea honestly who gives a shit about the lyrics. Its about the music. Badass album |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.08.16 | W&T is great, I just feel more melody and beauty lies in EYEWTKAS |
TheSupernatural
03.10.16 | I love EYEWTKAS specifically because it was raw aggression. You can look at the lyrics and say, "hey, that's misogynist!" and that's perfectly valid. I just generally don't look at it through that gendered lens. When Daryl is shouting "YOU FUCKING WHORE," I can take that metaphorically and apply it to a lot of things. I don't think it's as black and white as some people make it out to be.
And as a crazier thought, what if the album is actually more thematic and the lyrics and music is meant to reflect the emotional state of an American early 20's male who is struggling with some of his shitty experiences and inability to understand them. I know we like to poke fun at that demographic despite most of us falling in it, but if EYEWTKAS is viewed as an insight into the emotions of that, it's lyrics can be seen as thematic and not representational. Maybe I'm reading too much into it.
Last point, Finch did not rip off the album lol. Hell, Daryl has vocal parts on two of Finch's songs from WIITB |
DinosaurJones
03.10.16 | Yeah, on the inside cover, they give major props to Glassjaw for being "The best fucking band ever" |
AnimalsAsSummit
03.10.16 | I'd have to agree with you 100% supernatural. Its a pity that good art can be overlooked because people take the lyrics out of context and to heart; Daryl was just extremely emotional at the time. The album represents the release of that; pure catharsis made sound |
