Pressing Shuffle Once a Day, Every Day, For a Year

So... I have a lot of music. Tens of thousands of songs on my hard drive that I haven’t listened to in years. My phone music library gets stuff added and deleted almost daily. I like a lot of different shit, so as we’ve entered a brand new year, here’s a dumb fun idea: press shuffle once a day and briefly review whatever the hell comes up. To be fair this isn’t a “look at all my good music” list - I KNOW there will be shit here I either don’t like as much or forgot about, but that’s part of the fun. Feel free to take part in the comments.

Track: Got You
First song of the year is full of 80s-esque synths and pulsing bass beats. It’s entertaining and dumb, and Bret Autrey has always enjoyed meddling with every genre he can get his hands on - Sunset Neon essentially acts as the Scandroid to his Blue Stahli. It’s fun, but maybe a little forgettable. 3/5
2Akira Yamaoka

Track: Regards
Something a little more tense and foreboding compared to yesterday, as befitting anything of Silent Hill that isn’t calm ambiance or beautiful melody. ‘Regards’ is effectively two minutes of instrumental tension, howling wind sounds alongside a creepy warbling and steady percussion pitter-patter. Perfect for a cold winters morning in the fog. 4/5
3Agnes Obel

Track: Trojan Horses
I don’t know why, but it always seems to escape my memory just how mesmerising Agnes Obel truly can be. Maybe it’s because I purposefully try not to listen to Obel’s material too much, not wanting to “get used to it” and spoil what always seems a delicate, gorgeously haunting experience. Ridiculously efficient in getting under your skin, the eerie ‘Trojan Horses’ proves just as effective: amongst the slow and steady piano/strings arrangement, Agnes Obel’s delivery once again aims straight for the heart. 4/5

Track: Lakes
I guess you could kind of describe this one as a little bit of Fleetwood Mac meets a LOT of Daughter. It’s chilled out indie rock at heart, but carries the exact melancholy that makes Not To Disappear so poignant. I’ve been meaning to review this album for some time now, maybe this’ll encourage me to finish it. 4/5

Track: Fear Hate Love (Bonus)
Ahhh Papa Roach, how you remind me of younger days. The nu-metal thing was in full force. Linkin Park, Disturbed, Paramore and so many others dominated popular music. Pimp My Ride was still on friggin’ MTV(!!!). Yeah, I can’t help but deny a nostalgic appreciation for Papa Roach.. it’s superficial, easily recyclable material that keeps the band churning out a release every few years, but dumb fun. And as Roach songs go, ‘Fear Hate Love’ is pretty forgettable, but dumb fun nonetheless. Shaddix screams decently for what it’s worth (even if the lyrics are generic as hell), the drumming here has plenty of energy, and the main guitar riff is a BLAST to play. 2.5/5

Track: The Chase
Downloaded this one out of stray curiosity a while back. Honestly, I’d hoped the electro/joke songs may have evolved into something a little more substantial since ‘Electro Gypsy’, and (thankfully) ‘The Chase’ certainly seems to lean into more serious synthwave/electro pop territory. Overall, the melodies are decent, the vocals are okay. It’s fine, but Weebl & Co can do better than this. 2.5/5

Track: Endless War
Won’t lie, I’m an extremely casual Within Temptation listener. Downloaded Resist when it dropped to see if it was worth my attention, but honestly I probably only listened once or twice before moving on. ‘Endless War’ probably sums up the album plenty: overproduced, extremely lacking in memorable riffs, not attempting anything groundbreaking. Blah. 2/5

Track: Stick Cuts Upon
This one is super obscure. I actually added High Five Spaceship to the database and reviewed this a few years back, but to be honest ‘Stick Cuts Upon’ was never a massive favourite. Sure, it’s extremely surreal and excellently builds tension through ugly, abrasive instrumentation, but as a result it doesn’t really hold up for repeated listens down the line. For those interested in the more accessible HFS material, check out ‘Home’, ‘Trust No One’ or ‘Team Dream’. 2.5/5
9Akira Yamaoka

Track: One More Soul to the Call
Another Thursday, another Yamaoka! This is a massive favourite. Mary Elizabeth McGlynn’s vocals are fucking perfect for both Yamaoka and Silent Hill, and ‘One More Soul to the Call’ is probably the quintessential McGlynn SH track. It’s a fairly standard grungy rock track by design, but the heart and emotion that pours is entirely what makes Silent Hill my all time favourite game series. 5/5

Track: Assimilate (Skinny Puppy cover)
This... this isn’t a good cover. I love Daron, I love System of a Down, I enjoy Scars On Broadway (*AHEM*, Daron Malakian AND Scars On Broadway(!)), but this is a pretty pointless cover. I’m not the biggest Skinny Puppy fan in the world, but at least the original felt like it was trying to do its own thing; the warbling, Depeche Mode-esque synths are distinctive enough to allow the track its own identity. This cover is just another blatant filler Scars track, offering nothing of note except maybe the fact Malakian’s death growl thing is kinda fun. 1.5/5

Track: Coda
Confession time!: I’ve...... never actually listened to this properly. I remember hearing about In Via way back when it dropped, it honestly seemed exactly the kind of post rock/atmospheric shit I’d usually adore, and what did I do? Download it, and never actually listened to it. I now realise how stupid this was, because ‘Coda’ is beautiful: the piano plucks at the heartstrings, yet lifts here and there optimistically, whereas when the final climax does finally appear it feels *huge*, like finding a lost loved one amidst rubble and chaos. A fantastic discovery, long overdue. 4.5/5

Track: Outro
Exactly what it says on the tin, ‘Outro’ is effectively 2 minutes of relaxed guitar noodling/arpeggios/harmonics to wind down and close the album after the huge 9 minute ‘Blackbird’. It’s chilled out and pretty enough, but is obviously Tash just sat in a room cross legged, eyes closed as whatever comes to mind plays out, and as such isn’t all that memorable. 3.5/5
13Like A Storm
Catacombs

#13
Monday, January 13th 2020
Track: The Bitterness
Wow. I remember getting pretty excited when Catacombs finally dropped. Like A Storm had a little something that I liked a lot a few years back, but Catacombs never really grabbed me the same way, and ‘The Bitterness’? It’s crap. Generic, uninspired, chugga chugga butt rock crap. The processing on the vocals is awful, the hook is painfully bland, and it’s nothing that hasn’t been done a thousand times before. I deleted the album barely a minute and a half into this. 1/5

Track: Old Love / New Love
Damn, completely forgot about this album. Downloaded it way back after hearing ‘To The Top’ but never really came back to it. Won’t lie, ‘Old Love / New Love’ is actually pretty solid for the most part. The ending is super underwhelming with the gospel thing, but mostly this is a fun funk-infused track that was pleasantly surprising. 3/5 (*EDIT* Thursday, 16th January 2020: You know what? I keep coming back to this one. It’s a lot of fun, bumping to 4/5)

Wednesday, January 15th 2020
Track: Ride Of Your Life
A couple of years back I reviewed this album to highlight a fun, bluesy-Hendrix infused record that felt worth bringing to more attention. Kenny Wayne Shepherd is honestly still an excellent guitarist and frontman, but ‘Ride Of Your Life’ isn’t the best of the bunch. 2.5/5
16Thirty Seconds to Mars

Track: This Is War
Oh man. I remember hearing this for the first time ever in those Dragon Age trailers and getting super pumped. What an awesome buildup, and Leto sounds excellent. It’s probably here that the more grandiose elements of 30STM’s material was becoming more and more evident, and for the most part it works (unlike later albums which became a little big for their boots...). The fuck was that music video though? Tanks being attacked by magnets?? It was painful to watch how serious they were trying to be pretend soldiers. 3.5/5

Track: New Year’s Eve
Meh. I like ‘The Tide’, it’s pop rock fun and pretty excellent production-wise, but ‘New Year’s Eve’ makes me feel just a little too much like a 13 year old girl living in the 80s..... 1/5

Undertale Soundtrack

#19
Sunday, 19th January 2020
Track: Snowy
Ahhhh Undertale. It’s odd that a game not so long ago feels so nostalgic; it’s undoubtedly the retro graphics reminding me of countless evenings exploring Pokemon Red, but honestly Undertale’s soundtrack is often more in line with a Ghibli movie. ‘Snowy’ is a simple little piano piece, but so damn recognisable you’d be hard pressed to find a modern gamer who hasn’t at least heard it in passing. If we’re talking Ghibli, this is probably what would be playing whilst the young, wistful protagonist gazes lazily at the bright blue sky above, dreary clouds gently crawling by to reveal distant vapour trails and local bird life. And eating lunch. 4/5

All Re-Mixed Up

#20
Monday, 20th January 2020
Track: Monsters Deconstructed (Mat Mitchell Remix)
As far as remix albums go, All Re-Mixed Up is pretty up and down. The highs are amazing, but the lows definitely feel disappointing. ‘Monsters Deconstructed’ is an absolute highlight: the moody ambience and slowly simmering bass/synths adds a lot of tension, and the guitar “solo” feels appropriately used. 3.5/5

Tuesday 21st, January 2020
Track: Not Enough
Like much of the 45 album, ‘Not Enough’ is okay radio friendly rock with some cool production elements (the fluttering, delayed guitar lick is very Wes Borland), but I found a lot of the album forgettable, like this song. 2.5/5
22High Five Spaceship

#22
Wednesday 22nd, January 2020
Track: Cheap Divorce, Pt. 2
Another High Five Spaceship track makes an appearance this month, and if I’m honest it’s the most “straightforward” of the entire album. ‘Cheap Divorce, Pt. 2’ is essentially as “acoustic singer-songwriter” as it gets, but the vocals are pleasant and it’s catchy. Not the best of the album, but nice enough. 3/5

Track: A Day In The Light Of
I’ve never actually listened to this. I’m hearing plenty Rage Against The Machine and System of a Down influence for sure, with some moody Metallica cleans in the bridge. It’s okay. Pretty derivative of older acts that have done this shit before, but still fun. 3/5

Track: Psycho
I can’t deny I’ve got a soft spot for a lot of Breaking Benjamin. If we’re comparing “butt rock”, BB is at least proud to be a part of it and they’ve never pretended to be anything else, and while ‘Psycho’ is by no means Top 10 Breaking Benjamin the punchy riffs and delicious bass licks are fantastic for a pissy drive home. 3.5/5

Sunday 26th, January 2020
Track: The Good Life
Oh look, more butt rock! I don’t give a fuck, this song is a catchy jam that I’ve enjoyed numerous times. Life Starts Now is one of those albums that reminds me of my younger days, ‘The Good Life’ is a goddamn jam. 4/5
27Of Monsters and Men
Beneath the Skin

#27
Monday 27th, January 2020
Track: Thousand Eyes
I cannot honestly tell you how much I love this damn album. Beneath the Skin is fucking exquisite, and ‘Thousand Eyes’ brooding, building undertones of what is so ominously the calm before a violently emotional storm is brilliantly realised. 5/5

Tuesday 28th, January 2020
Track: All Gone (Alone)
Well shit. First OMAM and now Tuesday brings this punch in the gut. Like the entire soundtrack, ‘All Gone (Alone)’ tugs at every damn heartstring necessary to pull you in. It’s a simple track by design, but does so much with so little. 5/5
29Don Broco
Automatic

#29
Wednesday 29th, January 2020
Track: Superlove
I’m not a massive Don Broco listener - got rec’d Automatic a while back and it’s been sat in my phone fairly ignored. ‘Superlove’ is a big fun pop rock anthem, I don’t mind it but an entire album of this would probably irritate me. 3/5

Track: I Have To Go
I’ve been meaning to review this album since it released but keep putting it off. I’ve always really liked Annette Olson’s vocals, be damned of how 50/50 her time with Nightwish was received by fans. Truth be told, Imaginaerum is one of my favourite albums ever, so that probably says a lot about me. ‘I Have To Go’ is a full on ‘Slow Love’-inspired album closer, and despite how derivative it feels Anette’s beautifully graceful delivery more than makes up for it. 4/5

Kind of a punkier take on the Deftones sound. Massive riffs and massive percussion makes this one a lot of fun, but it’s not my favourite Chapter and Verse track tbh. 3/5

Track: Black Soul
I have such mixed feelings about this album. It’s fine, but fans hailing it as the fucking second coming is just plain wrong. ‘Black Soul’ has a fun groove to it and the guitar solo is cool, but it’s still pretty straightforward radio rock. 3/5

Track: Cold Cold River
Shit, I forgot all about this album. I remember first hearing Mirah wayyyyyyy back in the original American Horror Story season (which also features the exceptional Carina Round, I might add), and ‘Cold Cold Water’ has aged wonderfully. I need to relisten to this properly. 4/5

Track: Happy
This is just an interlude track of mostly static noise and warbling if I’m honest. Not a whole lot to rate, although the final 10 seconds of Tewers admitting “I think I’m happy knowing you aren’t” is a little amusing. 2/5

Track: Through the Cellar Door
I’ve got a lot of love for this song. The melodies are honestly really beautiful, contrasted with sudden bursts of fuzz box electric guitar leads probably more akin to White Stripes territory. It’s extremely up and down in structure which can be off putting, but to be honest it mostly adds to the track. 3.5/5

Track: The Last Firstborn (Klayton Remix)
This is a fun trance-heavy remix of the first ever Celldweller song I heard. I remember hearing the original and having an absolute blast, the mix of heavy with electronic is Klay at his absolute best, so hearing a more electronically infused version is a lot of fun. 4/5

So it’s currently absolutely pissing it down here in wonderful ol’ Britain, so a moody APC track in the car only seems appropriate.
