04.21.22 | Gotta go with Iceland! |
DungeonBoy
04.21.22 | Iceland is best, but Exercises in Futility is also best |
Gameofmetal
04.21.22 | Iceland easily. |
botb
04.21.22 | Iceland every time |
Eakflanderyof
04.21.22 | Most Icelandic bm is pretty boring but there are a couple gems |
loulou
04.21.22 | So you're more into Polish BM? |
naughtcturnal
04.21.22 | Iceland has bands like Skáphe, Misthyrming and Svartidaudi but poland has MGLA…
MGLA is too good to ignore but Iceland seemingly has more good bands. Kinda hard to choose between both |
loulou
04.21.22 | Poland has a great scene too: blaze of perdition, kreigsmachine, mgla, furia, biesy, medico peste... Maybe they are more into the 2nd wave aesthetic. |
Gameofmetal
04.21.22 | Mgla kinda carry Poland but they're even somewhat overrated. Iceland has a shitload of bands at Mgla's level or higher. |
TheSpirit
04.21.22 | mgla is one of the most overrated bands in modern black metal |
loulou
04.21.22 | Just to be the devil's advocate, the polish drummers are impressive, Darkside and Namtar are better than any Icelandic drummers. |

09.15.22 | @Eakflanderyof i kind of agree. Icelandic scene has sort of very surreal, stylish bm (like, smart, well-supported talented musicians making grim music as best they can) but poland has furia, odraza, mgla... it's just richer and more believable stuff imo. bm driven by entrenched economic problems, veiled by useless religion, long shadow of WWII...
@TheSpirit hard disagree about mgla being overrated lol, they are that popular because they are that good. Mdlosci from 2006 should end that convo

09.15.22 | mgla have perfected the "solid bm" orthodoxy and they're notable for doing explicitly that. a 4.5/5 band they are not tho |
Heppasodge
09.15.22 | like, they are also notable for probably the best drummer and integration of drumming in bm, completely unique melodic phrases, the archetype of nihilistic thematics in bm... i don't even think its correct to say they 'perfected' anything, it's just really compelling music. I don't even think their themes are particularly orthodox to be honest. they are pretty free of religious references, it's more like secular nihilism |
ToSmokMuzyki
09.15.22 | POLSKA KURWY!! |
combustion07
09.15.22 | I'd have to look at a full list of bands from both but off of the top of my head I'd say it goes to Iceland |
Gameofmetal
09.15.22 | idk i always thought mgla was just like a super solid regular ass modern black metal band with a notably good drummer. Never really got what was so mindblowing about them. |
Heppasodge
09.15.22 | the triumphant-ness and melodies probably, how it all hangs together. it's probably an emotion-type thing, you connect with it or not. but also how their themes pervade the music. and also the drumming lol |
zaruyache
09.15.22 | they're conceptually intriguing because they appear to weave all those unique things into otherwise-appearing straightforward bm. |
Heppasodge
09.15.22 | Agree for sure |
