04.20.23 | the outrage from the basketball media regarding the draymond suspension is so fucking weird. i expected players-turned-talking heads like kendrick perkins to come to his defense for the clicks... but seeing actually serious analysts like zach lowe complaining about it feels so disingenuous
dude is one of the dirtiest players in the league for a decade running, pulls this shit in the playoffs every year, knocks out his own teammate, and then stomps the shit out of a guy before cutting a heel promo on the opposing fans. of course he's gonna get suspended are you fucking kidding me. most respectable thing adam silver has done in years.
and the way the warriors organization treats the dude is fucking abominable. steve kerr didn't see?? he hasn't watched it back yet?? has he found and fired the guy who leaked the poole video yet????? maybe if they ever disciplined draymond internally he wouldn't be out here getting himself suspended multiple playoff games. almost hard to even blame draymond seeing he's so used to just getting away with everything

04.26.23 | Westbrook played his ass off this series and I have a newfound respect for him. Still, happy to put away the clips in 5. Nuggets won't be able to stop Phoenix either. AlexKzillion
05.01.23 | kings have a bright future. upgrade the harrison barnes spot, maybe get a big that'll prevent sabonis from getting cooked on the boards... don't think either of those things will be that difficult to do in the offseason
do kinda get the feeling that sabonis's game doesn't translate to the playoffs very well |
MarsKid
05.01.23 | Defenses don't fear him. He gets out-bullied in the paint and never takes open looks beyond it, so you can just leave him alone for the most part. Looney essentially removed him from the game. It's definitely something he can improve on in the future. |
AlexKzillion
05.01.23 | yeah really shows the difference between the regular season and the playoffs in the nba. sabonis is unquestionably an elite regular season player, and far better than kevon looney... but watching that series looney easily looked like the more effective player
kinda reminds me of gobert on the jazz a bit... unique player that will win you a lot of regular season games, but when the opposition can gameplan for you for an entire series the weaknesses kinda get brought to the forefront. he's the best passing center in the league besides jokic, but unlike jokic he can't really punish defenses (or at least playoff defenses) on his own when the passing lanes are taken away. the warriors are a special case but still this happened in indiana too a bit. felt like the possession was dead every time he got the ball at the top of the key. not to mention getting dominated on the boards though that's more of a team problem than purely sabonis problem |

SteakByrnes
05.05.23 | He also does a lot not to be hated on imo, he’s a wizard on offense and knows how to run an offense and I like how he always tries to make the best play every possession (unless he’s launching a 3 lol). He was a pretty great defender in his early cavs and then heat days too, probably should’ve got a defensive player of the year, and his chase down blocks are dope as hell. Idk I just like watching him play, I’ll be sad when he retires. He’s done a lot for his community too which is commendable.
Don’t gotta like everybody tho I guess lol |

05.05.23 | Lebron is absolutely one of, if not the best, to ever do it. And yeah, the league does whine/mock nearly every call overall. But lebron definitely has some of the most over the top meltdown episodes I've ever seen. It's annoying to watch outright toddler tantrums like that. Only player thats worse is probably draymond lol |

Storm In A Teacup
05.05.23 | LeBrons stats only look so good because he strained himself and selfishly played to score crazy to make sure he broke the record this year, at the cost of a winning record. LeBrons selfishness cost more games than Russ did. Russ won them 4 in a row by himself. Lakers would not be in playoffs. |
Storm In A Teacup
05.05.23 | Anthony Davis and Lebron both probably would have played 40something games instead of low to mid 50s if they didnt have to fight for a playoff spot. Russ hit 50 something games with the Lakers and still added 21 more with Clippers |

Eakflanderyof
05.08.23 | "kinda horrifying loss for Nugs cuz Jokic was so good and then his last two plays were bad and nobody helped"
Eh, the difference between a nugs loss and suns win was a nobody (shamet) turning into steph curry for 5 minutes. Also, booker basically having back to back career games. If that doesn't happen the series is 3-1 instead of 2-2.
I still think it's likely nugs in 6 because they're going back to Denver for a game and no way booker sustains his ridiculous pace |
robertsona
05.08.23 | Shamet shoots 41% from 3 for his career don’t play with Landry. Don’t even play with Landry Fields |
Eakflanderyof
05.08.23 | Looking at his stats. 41% is his FG%. From 3 he is 38.8%. That's still solid but he averages 2 threes a game and less than 10 PPG. He made like 4 or 5 threes in a row. That won't happen often even for steph |

Shout out to my man Moody and to fucking Lonnie Walker who I guess is better as a 9th or 10th man than any Warriors reserve. Oh and also fuck Jordan Poole |
unclereich
05.09.23 | yea unfortunately klay's injuries have aged him into no longer being a viable starter going forward. poole of course has regressed to the point of being unplayable, and the wiseman draft pick basically set them back a few years as they have nothing to show for drafting second overall other than the corpse of GPII. and let's not forget their depth is non existent and wiggins-despite the fact he's become a defensive guru won't ever score enough consistently to become a valid second option for curry. still crazy they made it this far if you consider they struggled to stay above .500 all year. will be fascinating to see their offseason decisions, I truly believe Klay/dray/poole are all on borrowed time. one or two will be gone next year along with Bob Myers. their only hope is Curry has a couple of seasons left and they can cook something up in the offseason. kuminga and moody's development will be paramount. my guess is this is the end of the road for the warriors barring a miracle. been an unbelievably great run though. |
StormChaser
05.09.23 | Agree with most of your takes, but getting rid of Draymond and Myers would just be a boneheaded move that would surely lead to the end. Dray's lack of offensive game and intention is killing them in this series, but without his defense they're dead in the water. Tough decisions will have to be made, but I'd basically put anyone on the block save for Curry, Looney and Dray. Never been a Wiggins fan, last year he stepped up hugely but he's always too reluctant to score for my taste, despite his obvious talents. I think he could and should be their second option on the offensive side, but he just doesn't have the confidence or self belief to do it. Fucking unbelievable run, this team made me watch basketball, sad to see them going out like they seem to be, if for nothing else than for the fact that Steph is still arguably the best guy on the floor in most playoff games. Also, don't think not making any moves last offseason was Bob's move, fucking Lacob wanted to do Spurs vII with the young guys but you just can't pull that off with the way Kerr wants to play and coach his guys. All in all, everyone's a little to blame (Draymond's punch probably did most of the damage cause it killed the vibes) but it's a blasphemy to botch a season with Steph at the height of his powers |
SteakByrnes
05.09.23 | I still love Klay he's one of my favorite players, but he had some very questionable shot selections in that game that proved costly. Idk if it's the hype of playing the Lakers, or if he's still trying to prove that he can ball after the injuries, but he needs to take a breather and think things through on plays just a little more. Game 2 Klay was sensational but every other game not so much |

seemed like he learned a lot from last year's meltdown against the mavs. win or lose it feels like the dude has ascended into being arguably the best shooting guard in the league, and not because harden aged out of it but because booker is just that good |

See I’d say the exact opposite. CP3 has actually been a detriment that’s why they’ve won without him. More ball in his hands more playmaking. Pels did the same thing with Zion having him run point and he went off |

I don’t really ask for much, just don’t punch your teammates in the face and destroy the team’s chemistry and try not to become an albatross. Both players will always have love and respect from fans but much like the Sf giants with lincecum/Cain/bumgarner at some point the old guard must accept reality. This year has made it quite clear something has to change in order to take advantage of currys last few golden years and keeping dudes around or keeping them in their normal starting role because they won you rings in the past isn’t going to be the winning formula going forward. |

I fucking hated the fact he punched Poole and he's 100% the main reason this season's been as sour as it's been. There's no excuse for that, but all of that's not important cause on the court nobody can do what he does defensively. And also he's worth much more than Poole is for the immediate future of this team. Also, even though punching a teammate's pretty much an undefendable act, I gotta say from some of Poole's oncourt shenanigans, showboating, boasti g and body language he probably had it coming, especially when you try to fuck with a guy like Draymond, you're gonna get fucked |

I like him as a player and am not downplaying what he does for the team, but his offensive inefficiencies are too glaring when we lose games to give him one last big pay day. If he’s willing to not take max money, and klay is open to a role off the bench, and Poole is offloaded in exchange for another teams horrible contract, I could see a world where they run it back next season. Too many ifs though. Finding someone with some legitimate size and scoring ability in the offseason seems more likely than giving draymond max money but that may force Kerr into actually making an adjustment to his coaching style |

05.10.23 | Yeah I do think that Draymond is borderline indispensable as a defender, one of the best ever. Game changing and allows them to play extremely versatile on that side of the ball. His offensive game isn't horrendous but it is exploitable. I do think Steph is still criminally underrated and it's a bummer to see his play buoy an okay-ish team to only okay results - I hate how the zeitgeist is on him in the all-time discussion so I'm forced to root for him to get chips to get old-head thinking on board with him being where he deserves in that discussion. |

From watching Draymond on the offensive end, it's pretty easy to call out his lack of a consistent jumpshot and not having any moves under the rim, but he's by no means a liability. He just prefers to be the distributor and does it at an elite level for his position. The problem is when he's not aggressive which was definitely not the case tonight. If the Warriors play the Warriors way, which is ball and man movement, and if their shooters actually hit open shots generated this way, nobody's talking about Draymond being a bad offensive player. In any case, he's definitely one of the best defenders of all time, as Pitch said, and getting rid of a guy who is one of your only great playmakers on the offensive end, and is a fucking swiss army savant on the other is just crazy talk. I'm sure if Myers stays on as GM and Kerr stays on as coach they'll have none of that.
I'm just so fucking bummed after this game and game 3, seeing how they're just fucking too much for the Lakers to keep up with if they just play with confidence and pace like they did. It'll be heartbreaking to see them go down feeling like they didn't give enough in some of these previous games and like they didn't trust each other enough. Sucks for a team that's built on chemistry and playing for one another

Eakflanderyof
05.12.23 | I don't think KD's rings are much weaker than many other's rings. Most teams winning chips have two or more superstars on the team that now, more often than not, conspired to team up. While klay's good, he's never been a superstar. And by the time KD joined, the rest of the league was starting to catch up to the warriors style of high volume threes. Without KD, they don't win those rings |

05.12.23 | I just feel like joining a 73 win team as a top 3 player in the league was probably the weakest move by a star player I ever seen. Being competitive is part of the game and being a pro athlete. Those rings didn't prove anything other than he needs the safest bet. |

05.12.23 | Sure, but Durant gets ALL the hate for joining a superteam when other dudes in the league are doing that constantly |

YoYoMancuso

AlexKzillion
05.12.23 | yeah not to say embiid didn't have an mvp caliber season, but he only got mvp because jokic wasn't "allowed" to win three in a row... nba awards are so stupid. same exact thing happened to giannis a couple years ago but not really as egregious
and its even more annoying when embiid is whining and complaining for years about how disrespected he is when it comes to mvp and all-nba and then ducks the head to head matchup with jokic last month like bruh just let your play do the talking what is this dude treats it like he's running for office or something |
Eakflanderyof
05.12.23 | Yeah, embiid has definitely been a diva about the mvp whereas jokic seems like he doesn't give a shit. The one argument for embiid is that he's better defensively but jokic is easily the best offensive player in the league right now |
ballsohard22
05.12.23 | "Sure, but Durant gets ALL the hate for joining a superteam when other dudes in the league are doing that constantly"
Durant only walked through a door that lebron kicked open by going to the heat in 2010, and he gets routinely hated on for it. nevertheless, durants move to the warriors was even more egregious than lebron and bosh to the heat, so he deserves all the questions and hate that come his way. |

kd joined a team that was one game away from being back to back champions
lebron was firmly the best player (especially towards the end) on those heat teams while kd was the 1b. the heat probably don't win anything without lebron, while the warriors won titles both before and after kd. hardly even a discussion. |

There's just such an annoying blindspot with the basketball zeitgeist on this type of thing, though. Yes, Joel's defense is markedly better than Jokic's (though he is very overrated at this point), but he has the EXACT same exploitability / lack of scheme-versatility for which Jokic is incessantly ragged for. On the offensive side, Jokic has practically ZERO exploitability and has nearly infinite scheme-versatility, while Joel is a very narrowly great offensive player, and even the things he excels at are either at Jokic-level, or below it. He is extremely depending on foul-drawing exploits and non-movement scoring, while being very mediocre as a facilitator when his scoring is targeted by defenses.
So, archetypally, Jokic has the same defensive negatives, but NONE of the offensive negatives - and his offensive skills AND production that overlap with Embiid are at least on par and usually better.
Big dopey serb looks funny so therefore can't be THAT good. He IS THAT good. |

I agree they aren’t the same, KD’s move is the softest of all time. But if you’re trying to take this a step further and say Lebron didn’t make a “super team” by going to the Heat that’s where I draw the line lol. He absolutely did. Past success doesn’t matter they added a ton of talent that year with dudes banding together there. Even with dudes past their prime they added like 6 ballers outside Lebron and Bosh lol |

PitchforkArms
05.12.23 | I get some of the criticism of LeBron hand-picking a super-team in Miami, but.... like.... what is he supposed to do? The team construction efforts in Cleveland all proved to be terrible and had no signs of getting dramatically more prosperous with respect to the front office decisions and he was a free agent. He went and played with another great player (Wade) and Bosh came along. Would people be less angry if Bosh didn't come? That would make a little sense. Otherwise, was he supposed to choose a bad team to go to? Was he supposed to toil in Cleveland. Look at how KGs career turned out - he spent the bulk of his prime in Minnesota and we now think of him significantly less favorably than we should (totally discordant from how good of a player he actually was). People always spout the "Look what [insert all-timer who got super lucky with the team/organizational construction that allowed them to gather arbitrary accolades (MJ, Steph, Kobe, Duncan)] did! Why doesn't LeBron just BE THAT GOOD????" when the truth is that it requires an insane amount of luck to win a championship on even the best teams, let alone the amount of luck it requires to end up on an organization that has the structure to develop a championship level team, as well as the luck that it requires to draft adequate players that contribute to that goal. LeBron got super unlucky and I don't know what else he should've done - spare the extra tampering of getting Bosh to join. |
Eakflanderyof
05.12.23 | It's more me having a hard time respecting a guy who gets people traded/fired because they aren't going to win HIM a chip. I think lamelo would clash with steph. Only way it would work is if steph moved to SG because lamelo is the better passer. For klay, I don't believe the injuries are a factor but I could be wrong. I think he's just showing his age. Some players show it sooner than others. Lebron still plays like he's 30 whereas klay looks lebron's age |
Eakflanderyof
05.13.23 | Yeah, I'll take the nuggets in 6. Their offense is much more versatile than GS. |
AlexKzillion
05.13.23 | ^^^yeah that's what i thought too during that draft. couldn't really see the warriors taking lamelo cause of how redundant him and curry would be together. it'd be like a slightly better version of the curry/dlo back court. |
unclereich
05.13.23 | Not hard to understand that two significant injuries to his leg and knee have made klay look 40 years old. Lebron has never had such an injury and few players ever had to take that amount of time off. Lamelo in Kerrs system would have been a sight for sore eyes imo. |
Eakflanderyof
05.13.23 | Klay was never a superstar though. He's always been a tier down. Now, he's an aging non superstar. Durant is as old as klay with a lengthy injury history and still plays at a high level. Injuries may play a part but I really just think klay is past his prime |
unclereich
05.13.23 | no shit lol but again to have the knee then the Achilles immediately after and miss two and half seasons is absurd. he was coming off an all star campaign. the injuries and time missed are absolutely the biggest reasons for his downfall. |
Eakflanderyof
05.13.23 | Well, if we're going by reg season stats alone. His stats were better this year than the season before his injuries. Higher fg%, ppg, assists, and rebounds. But people get exposed in the playoffs with tougher defensive play. Dude is just washed I think |
unclereich
05.14.23 | do you watch the games? his lateral movement is nonexistent. he looks like a shell of his former self. his regular season stats were inflated due to wiggins and curry missing time. |
Eakflanderyof
05.14.23 | Curry been missing time every season since like 2017 though. And klay is nearly two full seasons removed from the achilles injury now. If he hasn't recovered yet then he won't. It may or may not be due to the injuries but that's just semantics at this point |
StormChaser
05.14.23 | Klay's one of my favorite players ever and I'll forever respect his contributions to this team, but I feel like he was in his head and feelings way too much this season. He's been acting petty towards other teams with the ring count thing, getting into it with guys way beneath his resume and experience. I feel like that perpetual need to prove himself (understandable due to his injury absences) made him all around a worse player than he actually still is and can be in the future. It was like he constantly had to remind himself not to be selfish and it was a tug of war all season long between wanting to be the man again and being a part of the team. I feel for him, but his mindset and selfishness translated to a very inconsistent season culminating with the meltdown in the playoffs.
I also think Steve Kerr is responsible for not being harder on him in terms of not hunting every shot just 'cause you're Klay Thompson and playing with patience and actually passing the goddamn basketball when you touch it. He's not the same defender he was, but if you take a look at the games where he was locked in and actually wanted to play a team game and not hero ball on offense, he was way more reliable and engaged on the defensive end. He used to be able to do both, now he's limited on defense, which has to hurt as well. I don't think he's catastrophic though, I think he mostly just stops caring about playing D when he misses those dumbass shots he takes and that's when the breakdowns really begin. I do understand that he actually makes a lot of those btw, and that's what makes him the second best shooter of all time, but he has to reflect and understand that taking as many as he does on a per game basis hurts the team. That being said I expect him to bounce back next year like the ABSOLUTE CHAMP he is |

05.19.23 | I really want the Lakers to lose badly, but they're putting up a hell of a fight and being a lot more physical, they've definitely earned everyone's respect cuz I think Denver is clearly the better team. Them being the more physical team will work to their advantage when they go to LA for the next 2 games, let's just hope the reffing won't be egregious there. LeBron is flopping hard and he's doing anything he can to win, but to me he looks injured (or just old).
Calling the bubble season a fluke season and discounting it as a real chip is just foolishness btw. Everyone played in the same environment, the rules were the same for everyone, the Lakers pulled it off, they were obviously the best team that year and that's it.
But man, the league has to do something about the state of officiating. Players are allowed to complain too much, they're flopping too much, sometimes it's just disgusting to watch. I think the refs should be allowed to give out routine techs for complaining. The league should hand out suspensions (fines won't do much cuz they earn too much to care about losing a couple of grand) for repeat offenders in the flopping department just like they did with Draymond for his history this year. Also, limit the challenges to 45 seconds. If you can't tell within 45 seconds of a slow motion replay what happened, just go with the initial call and let's move on. If Jeff Van can get the right call in 5 seconds after he saw the replay, people who get paid a substantial amount of money to officiate should be able to do so in 45 seconds. All of this game stoppage heavily favors teams like the Lakers who thrive on disrupting the opposing team's offensive flow.
And I'm not even gonna touch the regular season - post season reffing differences because that just seems to always have been ingrained in the game, but it's annoying as well. |
Hyperion1001
05.19.23 | some thoughts 🤔
1. lebron finally looks old. we were all wondering when ledecline would start but i think its finally here.
2. i dont think any team left can beat denver in a 7 game series. they're just too good and jokic is the best player alive right now. if one of murray or porter are hitting shots idk how anyone overcomes it.
3. please give me joker v jimmy. |
PitchforkArms
05.19.23 | @Storm
Totally agreed on the fouling / flopping. I think that they are going to struggle to properly implement great in-game procedures to address it, because players are so good at not even attempting for baskets and just looking to draw fouls (though, there are a lot of plays in modern basketball that are clearly offensive fouls that get called shooting fouls - I just don't get it sometimes). I think they should flag every foul call in a game that could be called into question, review it, and dole out post-hoc disciplinary action for flopping. Like, some amount of fine per flop infraction, and some sort of suspension for an accumulated amount of them. |

05.20.23 | Heat have that killer instinct and arguably the best coach in the league, or at a minimum the best coach remaining in the playoffs, as well as Butler who is a massive post-season performer. Celtics have notoriously fucked around and found out (Hawks series, Philly series) and struggle to close games, whereas Miami is excellent in these situations.
The J's have it in them to be stars, but they go cold for sometimes agonizingly long stretches. Williams is gonna take the heat for this loss, but Tatum sold that last quarter. Jimmy gonna get his regardless of if he's provoked anyways. |

05.22.23 | their dilemma is that their #1 and their #2 are nowhere near good enough to actually be #1 and #2 options. neither are playmakers, both have significant holes in their game; unless they’re scoring 40+ a night the flaws are too easy to exploit.
so, they need a #1 guy but they’re not going to get that unless they trade either brown or Tatum, which kind of leaves them in the same boat.

Goodbye and good riddance, tired of this team getting any more limelight and praise. They're tough, but they're not a great team or near being one
AD being in the top 75 above guys like Dwight Howard (am not a fan, but cmon) and Klay is the most ridiculous thing ever, BUT he's been the most impactful defensive player these playoffs, as well as for once didn't get injured.
When teams have to adjust to you roaming in the paint as much as they had to this year, you're a great fucking player. He got grown men scared to go to the basket, he's just not a superstar (not that anyone ever called him that probably) and definitely not a top 75 imo.
Also, just my 2 cents on the GOAT debate but I honestly feel like it's a damn stupid argument to have. Anyone can skew the results in the favor of their guy, and no one's ever gonna be right about it. LeBron is not the GOAT though |

I think it will be hard for modern day players to surpass jordan as the goat because pretty much every offensively gifted player nowadays plays little defense. Good defense is generally left to the guys that aren't gifted offensively so that the guys who are good scorers aren't getting tired or fouling out.
Lebron is decent defensively when he puts in the effort but it's hard for me to say he's the goat when jordan was elite on both ends of the floor |

yeah he's no.2. which is fucking huge. but let's be honest, he looks better when he plays with better pieces. his most impressive feat is taking that bum as cavs team in 2017 to the finals cause he carried them (the one without kyrie).

The disrespect my man Pip gets... Dude was a monster on both ends who led the Bulls to 50+ wins and within a whisker of the NBA Finals without Jordan. He was pretty easily Top 5 through most of the Bulls' run in the '90s. His ceiling may not have been as high as DWade, but his peak coincided with Jordan's. Lebron really only got two great DWade years to play with. I loved DWade, but he aged in dog years as athletic guards who thrive on contact tend to do (see also: Iverson, Allen). |
nash1311
05.23.23 | I can see both sides of that argument but everyone besides those two were role players. Lebron has played with so much more talent In my opinion.

i love dunking on ad as much as anyone, and prime klay was easily one of my fave players, but ad is clearly more deserving of being on that top 75 team than klay. i feel like draymond has way more of an argument than klay even. |
SitarHero
05.24.23 | The game has also dramatically changed. Used to be that you just needed one good scorer to be competitive and 2 made you a contender. The other guys just had to play defense and occasionally knock down a shot, but even that wasn't really necessary because the man defense rules made it so that your defender had to guard you even if you couldn't hit the ocean from a submarine. Zone defense rules have made it so that anyone who cant consistently hit a thre point jumper becomes a serious liability. |

05.24.23 | As a pelicans fan, AD is fucking garbage lol. Was so glad when we got rid of him. He’s inconsistent and constantly hurt. AD wouldn't win shit without LeBron and he was 1b to LeBron's 1a. But this discussion is inevitably going to be marred by Klay's recent struggles and AD's dominance defensively this year. AD's one of the most talented big men ever, but he doesn't have the heart or sense for the moment that Klay does. And you can bet your money on him not showing up for at least 1-2 games per series which is a potential game ender if he's your #1 option like he was this year.
Nugs rule, they're gonna win it whoever comes out of the east (I give Boston a 5% chance to do it) because they're the best team with the best player. As a GSW fan, I'm loving the free-flowing offense of the Nugs and their chemistry is spot on. That being said, Jimmy is on a historical tear of his own and will not be denied and the Heat are playing fantastic basketball as well. all prime klay did was shoot (albeit as well as basically anyone ever) and play excellent defense. literally could not be a better fit next to a do-it-all pg like steph and a unicorn like draymond (not to mention kd).
put him on a team like this year's celtics who don't really have a real pg and do a lot of iso bullshit/don't really have a lot of off ball movement and i feel he wouldn't be nearly as effective, let alone on a non-championship caliber team. people make such a big deal about "he scored a million points on five dribbles"... but that's far more of a function of the warrior's system and isn't really replicable anywhere else unless you're playing with like lebron or jokic. i don't think its a moot discussion at all its just what his game is. he's a ceiling player not a floor player, he makes great teams legendary but if he's the best guy on a non-playoff team they are probably still not a playoff team.
he is more the parish to steph's bird than the pippen to steph's mj |

05.24.23 | "But this discussion is inevitably going to be marred by Klay's recent struggles and AD's dominance defensively this year."
but is it really recency bias when its four years running now he's been either out injured or struggling? if klay never got injured you'd def have an argument but ad's holistic achievements have just far surpassed klay's "ringz / best shooter ever" argument at this point and that's what the nba 75 measures more than anything. ad's prime will likely end up twice as long as klay's by the time its done, assuming ad never falls on the floor like he got shot and is actually serious for once.
will also preface all that by saying there's like five guys who deserve it more than ad too |

Yeah, not the point though. Klay hasn't won shit without Curry, Dray, and/or KD (and Iguodala lol) leading the way. Health and availability aside the comparison is downright ludicrous. We're talking about a guy whose ceiling as a player is Mitch Richmond vs a guy whose ceiling is Hakeem Olajuwan.
"he doesn't have the heart or sense for the moment that Klay does."
Uhhh. AD hit THE shot of the 2020 playoffs; the game winner against the Nuggets to send the Lakers to the finals. The most important shot Klay ever hit for the Warriors was the one that took out Kyrie's knee in 2015. The second most important shot he took was the one at Lebron in the postgame conference in 2016 that fired him up and led to a historic Warriors collapse lol. Otherwise, every important shot for the Warriors has come from Curry or KD (and Draymond against someone's nuts)

Look lebron is an alltime great regardless, BUT if he had stayed with the cavs or at least hand't put together a super team and kept getting bounced in the playoffs or maybe even won a chip one or two, we wouldn't think he was the no.2 greatest all time.
same with KD. the only time people ever talked about him being one of the best players on planet earth was when he was on the warriors. his career before and after the warriors is one of losing although he remains an all time great scorer, kind of like a (much) better Carmelo or AI or any of the numerous great scorers who never won a chip |

StormChaser
05.25.23 | Y'all have some compelling arguments but to me this is what seals the deal (even if it was supposed to be an argument against Klay):
"all prime klay did was shoot (albeit as well as basically anyone ever) and play excellent defense". He shot the ball better than anyone not named Steph Curry and was a truly excellent defender. He was never a superstar, but neither is or was Davis. In today's league and all time, I'd take someone who's close to being best at shooting than someone who's not close to being the best at anything ever.
That being said, it was Dwight's spot that was taken |
AlexKzillion
05.25.23 | i think the biggest discrepancy here is you talk about ad and prime klay as if they are were the same tier player when they just aren't. as easy as it is to rag on the guy, ad has been a top 6-10ish player for what feels like forever now... and he'd probably be like top 3 if he wasn't made of glass and had a bit more motivation. davis absolutely is a superstar when he can be bothered and as good as klay was he was probably only like top 20 at his absolute peak. |
AlexKzillion
05.25.23 | "same with KD. the only time people ever talked about him being one of the best players on planet earth was when he was on the warriors."

Rings are overvalued in the both the nfl and nba but especially the nba. It's a team achievement and involves being in the right place at the right time, but one player can definitely elevate an nba team to some degree.
I think it's a caveman way of thinking though that a lot of people will simply write someone off because they don't have a ring. Some all time greats like barkley never won a ring and that's fine. And then some like tom brady were lucky enough to be a part of the greatest system in nfl history. Put tom brady on the falcons and he maybe wins 1 or 2 |

Mirroring @Eak's sentiment here. It wild to me that we can't see how lucky certain players have been to be on organizations that develop proper championship rosters around them. It has caused us to believe that players who "can't win" with the team that drafted them just aren't as good as the players who were (lucky enough to be) able to have the pieces fall into place around them that allowed for championship winning. LeBron was in a very obviously horrible situation that an individual player was not going to be able to claw his team out of - this is the exact situation we would've seen MJ in if the organization didn't surround him with a GOAT level coach and extremely great supporting cast. We saw it for 7 years... Players like Steph (who I am much higher on than most), MJ, Duncan, etc. are extremely lucky, while players like KG (who literally wasted 12 years of his career on a totally inept franchise) and early career LeBron were extremely unlucky and it would be absolutely ridiculous to expect them to do more than they did and the inability to win a championship in those situations does not make them less of players. |
Hyperion1001
05.25.23 | i gotta be honest I think the super team narrative is stupid as fuck. basketball is a team sport, isn’t the whole point to get a good 12 man team together to win?

Hyperion1001
05.25.23 | “ because creating a team that’s overwhelmingly talent wise better than everyone else completely defeats the purpose of competition. It’s really that simple”
again, is that not the whole point of sports? like, take any person on planet earth, pose them this question “would you like to be on a good team that wins or in a bad team that loses?”
is it not obvious what the answer is? |
PitchforkArms
05.25.23 | Yeah the Phil Jackson comments are warranted. Honestly, I think all coaches pre 2000s are a bit overrated. Due to rules and evolving skills, basketball became a significantly more complex sport that has a lot more schematic and player-utilization facets now. I think people like Nick Nurse and Spo are miles ahead of any of the coaches of yesteryear. |
nash1311
05.25.23 | “again, is that not the whole point of sports? like, take any person on planet earth, pose them this question “would you like to be on a good team that wins or in a bad team that loses?”
No. There has to be a level of parity or it isn’t competitive. This is why salary caps exist. The issue is the cap has increased so significantly in such small amounts of time, it’s allowed these bozos to time their contracts so they can all play together. It’s shitty, especially for small markets that can’t afford Lux tax.
Would you want to play monopoly starting out with another player already having 75% of the available money and saying go beat them? That’s not even fair or fun |
AlexKzillion
05.25.23 | i think the elite coaches today are as good as ever... but that the average coach from the pre-00s is probably much better than the average coach today
i mostly say that because outside of like the warriors and nuggets who have some of the most unique players to ever play the game... every team kinda plays exactly the same: 3s and layups through endless pick and rolls. some teams might run a bit more than others, or have a gobert type anchor that allows you to play a little differently defensively etc. but teams in the 00s and before seemed to have a much wider variety of styles that they played which i'd say probably allowed coaching to dictate the outcome of games a bit more. would also just think the players being generally less skilled than today's players would make the coaching matter even more. having a guy like spo or nurse or pop or kerr today makes a huge difference in the playoffs, but i think almost everyone else is interchangeable (and i think teams do too judging by how 90% of the league gets a new coach every three years) |
nash1311
05.25.23 | Yeah honestly from a coaching perspective offenses are very samey and frankly kinda boring. It’s mostly just ball movement and like you said layups and threes. It’s really interesting to see coaching aspects for defensive schemes. Both matchups and styles. Spo has been excellent with the Heat on the defensive front this postseason |
SitarHero
05.25.23 | "Phil Jackson isn’t as good as his resume either lol"
Phil Jackson was one of the first coaches to regularly run an offensive set more complex than a pick n roll while also transcending the "my way or the highway cos I'm the boss" mindset. He was arguably the first of the "modern" coaches as it were. Sure, he lucked into coaching some all-time greats, but he also got the most out of those greats. |
SitarHero
05.25.23 | "the average coach from the pre-00s is probably much better than the average coach today"
Highly unlikely. The game has become waaay more complex now than it was in the 90s and before. The worst coach today would coach the pants off Jerry Sloan, and Sloan was arguably the second or third most respected coach of his era. |

I disagree with this sentiment strongly. He may have the talent to be in that range, and may look it for a game or two in a given series, but he's by no means been a top 6-10ish player either in the regular or post season save for that bubble year in the playoffs.
"i gotta be honest I think the super team narrative is stupid as fuck. basketball is a team sport, isn’t the whole point to get a good 12 man team together to win?"
A 12 man roster is only for the regular season, you really need only 7-8 good and great players for the playoffs to win. That being said I hate superteams as well and am very glad that the teams that won the last couple of years haven't been superteams.
"the inability to win a championship in those situations does not make them less "of players."
No, but it has to be a differentiating factor when discussing the greatest players of all time. Even Charles admits that to be true
"Phil Jackson isn’t as good as his resume either lol"
what I think people are undervaluing about coaches is the ability to communicate key ideas to star players and getting everyone on board to be on the same page and to understand their role. It's not just about the schemes and gameplan. Yes, Phil had Jordan, Pip, Kobe, Shaq, but he's the Zen master for a reason and is respected among those guys for a reason. Tell me do you think it's easy managing all those egos while trying to implement a system? Steve Kerr failed at that this season for example, but the reason he won in his rookie year wasn't just because he had massive talent on his team, it's because he got everyone to buy in.
P.S. Heat's got this [2]

05.26.23 | "'the inability to win a championship in those situations does not make them less of players.'
'No, but it has to be a differentiating factor when discussing the greatest players of all time. Even Charles admits that to be true'"
Yeah, no. It just isn't much of a differentiating factor when you you look at the plethora of circumstances that that have to take place in order to actually win a championship. It is very very obvious that there are situations where it is not reasonable to expect a team to contend for championships, let alone win them, no matter how good the best player is. I think this is so palpable because it is very evident from both sides with so many all-time level players.
Kevin Garnett toiled for 12 years in Minnesota on a franchise and teams that simply did not have enough championship acumen, despite him being very obviously an all-time level player. Do we penalize him because he was never put in a position to win with that team. Conversely, Tim Duncan was granted the complete opposite situation - his teams were built extraordinarily well, and his abilities were all-time level as well. We have such a winning bias that we say someone like KG just "didn't have what it takes to get it done" (which is *technically* true, NO ONE has what it takes in his given situation) and Duncan was "the ultimate winner" (which he was, he had a skillset that was very helpful for building extremely good teams) - while in actuality, the players could have swapped teams, or swapped to similarly advantageous (or disadvantageous) circumstances and the championship count could reasonably flip.
The same thing can be said about everyone's favorite two players... MJ was "unable to get it done" for six years of his career until the team construction was elevated to a level that allowed for championships to reasonably be attainable. That does not make his skills more or less valuable or good. LeBron was in a significantly less advantageous situation than that and it is ridiculous to think that the reason for being unable to win was because his skills were not enough to do so. |

They have no adequate size to defend him one-on-one, so I do think they will need to put their best defender (Bam) on him, which drastically reduced Bam's value (versatility against smaller players). Their other bigs are also not good off-ball as help defenders, so the spacing and lane-clearing will be very apparent for the Nuggets cutters and drivers. I think Jokic feasts pretty hard as a scorer here. If not, that means the Heat are likely sending heavy doubles to make up for their one-on-one matchup disadvantage, and then I think we're going to see some bad blowouts with Jokic delivering some ultra-efficient passes from that double-team. They're also not very well-suited to take advantage of the Nuggets defensive shortcomings.
I think Nuggets in 4 or 5 is my rational pick. |

05.30.23 | but but spo
but yeah agreed for the most part. My heart says heat but my mind knows it’s nuggets |

05.30.23 | The Nugs haven't faced a coach on Spo's level and while he's not on the court I doubt he'll make it that easy for them. |
Hyperion1001
05.30.23 | as much as im a huge fan of coach spo there’s only so much a coach can do in a matchup like this. jokic is gonna dominate in the paint and there’s no coaching out there that can make that matchup much better.
I feel like the heats only true chance is playing the most rabid defense across the board they’ve played yet and even then I still don’t think they really have a chance. |
Eakflanderyof
05.30.23 | Heat have cooled off from where they were and I don't see them getting that hot again |
Wildcardbitchesss
05.31.23 | I didn’t watch either but I do want to point out that even tho the nuggets won both of their regular season matchups, the heat kept it within 5 both games.
Again I didn’t see either game so idk if there’s any context I’m missing, but that’s not a bad sign. I could definitely see them taking the nuggets to 6 games at least.
But maybe I’m fucking wrong and it’s time to bust out the brooms |
EyesWideShut
05.31.23 | Being from S.FLO I watched the Heat during the regular season and they were p bad, not even close to the same team during the playoffs. While Jokic is Jokic I do believe the Heat defense can effect the other Denver players. They Heat also went against tougher teams. |
EyesWideShut
05.31.23 | But I like both teams so gimme some good basketball |
Storm In A Teacup
05.31.23 | I doubt the heat were playing their current roster in those two games and imagine they are better now. I almost dont care which team wins. I want Jeff Green on Nugs to win a chip and I want Jimmy to win a chip with Heat. Guess since one is a bench and the other is the star i want the heat to win. |

05.31.23 | Miami's best defense against Jokic gonna be the humidity. Go heat! |

05.31.23 | think a nugs sweep is pretty likely
they just swept a lakers team that matched up with them quite a bit better than this heat team does, and woulda swept the suns if not for booker and kd combining for 80 a couple times.
i think the level of competition (at least in terms of bucks/celtics vs suns/lakers) is pretty even, especially considering giannis was injured... it just doesn't seem that way cause the nuggets wiped the floor with their opponents. the suns and lakers were both better than this heat team |

06.05.23 | I have never before seen a team so overperform as these Miami Heat do with respect to shooting. YoYoMancuso
06.05.23 | I still think Denver in 6 or 7. The Nuggets played terribly to start the 4th but had a crazy run of their own to end the game. If you had told me with 4 minutes left that Denver would have a chance to force OT I wouldn't have believed you |
EyesWideShut
06.06.23 | Im not a huge Herro fan but will be interesting what Spo does with him. I doubt he messes with the rotation too much but he did average 20 points during the regular season. If he can give 12 points he's a nice wild card. |
nash1311
06.06.23 | Yeah that’s gonna be a super interesting shift for them. Do you mess with what’s been working or nah |
EyesWideShut
06.06.23 | I would say nah.. but maybe try and work something to give Zeller's minutes to Herro haha |
nash1311
06.06.23 | I was really contemplating and I decided if Heat somehow win the finals this may be the greatest run I’ve ever witnessed. I mean an 8 seed has obviously never done it, but that plus play-in plus how “average” they are on paper would just be nuts. Like better than anything Lebron ever did besides the Warriors title. I mean their second best player is Bam lol |
AlexKzillion
06.06.23 | yeah i'd be scared whatever boost herro gives to the heat's offense isn't worth what he'll give up on defense... not to mention he may be super cold having sat out the past couple months. then again duncan robinson has been playing real minutes this playoffs
if they could've brought him back after going up 3-0 last round that would've been perfect |
StormChaser
06.07.23 | Nash, it would certainly be the most unlikely title of at least the last 30 years, probably ever
This series is the Nuggets' to lose, if they come in cold and disinterested (everyone except Jokić) again, they could get waxed by the Heat. By now we should all realise this team isn't gonna give away games, you gotta come correct
As for the Herro conversation, I'd defer to whatever Spo thinks is best, if he doesn't get any run it will be for good reasons I'm sure. Personally I'm leaning toward keeping him for a break-in-case-of-emergency scenario, but then again if Cody Zeller can get minutes on this team, Tyler Herro sure can as well. There's just the concern about inserting someone into the lineup in the finals after an extended absence. Doesn't feel like that's something that's good for either the team or the player (unless you're an all-time great or in a hole) |
MarsKid
06.07.23 | Duncan Robinson has been playing very well honestly, I don't think his minutes are any issue for the Heat.
Zeller minutes, on the other hand, are a horror show. |

06.08.23 | Again, this Miami team is great and Spo is an incredibly good coach who gets players to understand and buy into difficult and effective defensive concepts.
BUT, they are riding exceptionally, uncharacteristically, and (well, we're within x-number of games of finding out) unsustainably good shooting, especially with respect to the shooting talent on the roster.
In the regular season they were a 34.5% 3pt team, and in the postseason they are at 39%, and in playoff wins this year they are nearly 42%. That is inordinately good and I think has done a LOT to prop up and gloss over the weaknesses of this team. |

06.10.23 | A little bit of premature retrospective over the last 15ish years of basketball....
I think players like Jokic, Curry, and Bron have demonstrated that the resilience, scalability, fluidity, and attention-gravity aspects of basketball are significantly more important than the skills that people have come to value since the MJ era through Kobe and all of the others in that mold (iso scoring, "dog" 1:1 defense, smooth jumpshooting and flashy dribble moves) - especially now that defenses have become significantly more versatile and complex. The ability of those three guys (and many others to different varying degrees) to have "bad" games (i.e. poor shooting games - or poor box score stats) but still have incredible amounts of impact through their decision making, connectedness, and gravity (due to the fact that their skills scale to so many situations, actions, etc.) has made their team constructions so much more dangerous and allow for so many more avenues to generate great looks and thusly create very very good teams that are not reliant entirely on beastly individual performances by those stars (or at least not in the way we classically think of good individual performances). |
StormChaser
06.12.23 | Jordan did usher in an era of hero ball and iso driven scoring (even though he himself didn't necessarily play that way for his whole career) that seems to have ended with the arrival of the Spurs and especially Steph. I for one stopped watching basketball from like '03 til '16 and never understood the desire certain players had to dominate the basketball and chuck shots as they do, it always seemed stupid and like a recipe for disaster against a smart defense. The only caveat would be if you're actually are a top 10 all time player and if iso scoring is your go-to. In that case I suppose it's fine.
But other than that, it's a team game, why would you not include your teammates (or theirs for that matter) in an action? Sure you need to be able to iso a couple of times per game just to give the defense a different look, but iso hero ball was never something that seemed smart or sustainable to me in a fast paced game such as basketball (I'm sure the rule changes made it a lot more fast paced, but the talent did as well). It always just felt like a dumb machismo ego thing, which admittedly I do love seeing from time to time and guys banging heads are always fun to watch, just from a viewer's aspect and from a scheme aspect, team ball such as the Warriors or Nuggets play is so much more appealing to me and I've always gravitated toward unselfish players who enjoy in their teammate's success |
PitchforkArms
06.12.23 | Very well put, Storm. I think this year itself was a bit of a macrocosm of the discussion entirely - Embiid one MVP for ostensibly displaying the more individualistic and un-resilient/non-countering skills and having incredible basic box score stats doing so. We then see that his weaknesses in the team-game and lack of scheme versatility get brought to the forefront, where his counterpart, Jokic, is able to more easily counter with a change his direct role when defenses wish to play certain ways - and this change does not greatly reduce his impact on the court and he still contributes excessively positively to the team generating high-efficiency offense (and his defense has been darn good - well above what is expected, but the matchups were mostly favorable on that front). |

06.13.23 | It's incredibly difficult to win a championship, even though it looked easy for the Nuggets this year. But just take a look at that team the past 2 years, they could've easily competed and been close to this good if they had Jamal or MPJ healthy. Could they be a dynasty? Absolutely, if everything goes right for them. I just think there's a tremendous amount of luck involved and if you don't have luck with health you're pretty much screwed
Also, to sneakers' point "I thought they got rid of the "if you kick ur leg out on a jump shot and initiate contact and then flop it's a defensive foul" rule" - it's fucking ridiculous that after a fucking review they still called it that way. The casters were stunned too, someone should get some sort of punishment for that |
MarsKid
06.13.23 | So happy to see the Nuggets win! Well-deserved. Jokic can return to his horses now.
Whether Denver stays a juggernaut or not depends on how much of their talent they can keep. Jokic and Murray are essential of course, but you 100% need Aaron Gordon around. Not sure how many of their current players are locked under contract for a bit. |
SitarHero
06.13.23 | "But just take a look at that team the past 2 years, they could've easily competed and been close to this good if they had Jamal or MPJ healthy."
Yeah same could be said of the Lakers or Bucks too. A lot of thongs have to go exactly right to win. |
StormChaser
06.13.23 | Lakers? Lol, I thought they were a pretender since they let their championship team go. This was all smoke and mirrors as far as I'm concerned. They beat a young Grizz team which they were supposed to and a severely disjointed Warriors team that was also bound to lose at some point. I know it's easy to dismiss someone's chances after the fact, but I never trusted the Lakers this year |

PitchforkArms
06.20.23 | Beal seems to not be the shooter we once thought him to be.... I cannot imagine this team being exceptionally good, even offensively. Beal can generate mediocre efficiency offense on good volume, but does not have a skillset that scales super well without the ball. Booker can generate decent efficiency (not particularly great) offense and has an okay set of non-ballhandler skills. KD can generate quite efficient offense and has good non-ballhandler scaling. NONE of them are particularly good, though, at maximizing each other, or maximizing themselves when they aren't the primary creator. Booker and KD are much more well suited as non-decision makers. God DAMN I wish this team still had CP3 but he was like 25 years old instead of 35+ LOL |
sneakers
06.20.23 | yeah, people are highly overrating this team right now, they'll be a 2nd round exit |
nash1311
06.20.23 | I don’t think I’m overrating them, I’m under rating everyone else lol. Memphis has become a dumpster fire. kings, while good and improving, I think were a fluke. Clippers can’t stay healthy and are kind of a joke now. Wolves Pels thunder mavs not legit. Warriors lakers only possible teams that could beat Suns besides Nugs. Warriors have some major roster decisions to make and Lakers don’t have the fire power without some significant roster changes either.
East is another story, but the West kinda sucks rn |
StormChaser
06.20.23 | I'm a guy who doesn't appreciate Booker's game enough that's for sure, but he has been very efficient offensively for the past few years, and he does have a deeper bag than I'd like to admit. Beal's production will also be a lot better than it's ever been because now he's surrounded by 2 great players. That being said, I wouldn't worry about an offense only team with no depth in 2023/24 |

AlexKzillion
06.21.23 | is kd/booker/beal really all that different from kd/kyrie/harden in that regard??? they only played like 10 games together but they put up some insane numbers in that small sample size. i guess kyrie and harden are probably better passers than any of kd/booker/beal but i wouldn't say either of those guys are serious creators either |

PitchforkArms
06.21.23 | "is kd/booker/beal really all that different from kd/kyrie/harden in that regard?"
Yes. Extremely. Kyrie is a better long-range shooter than Booker, but the much more important thing here is that Harden is a significantly better playmaker and distributer than anyone on the suns. Honestly, Kyrie is a better playmaker than any of those guys, too. Obviously there is some off-ball effort issues with those guys, but as a unit, Harden's facilitation and playmaking helps the team become a high-level offense by offering super high efficiency opportunities to the rest of the team in a way that none of the Suns big 3 can. At this point, Beal is a much more effective isolation scorer than Harden, but man oh man, they've got two options that are better than him in that regard, and his skillset (and many aspects of both Booker's and KD's) do not help generate high-level offense in non-individual-scoring ways. The best teams in the modern era do not build their teams with such a lack of skillset maximalization. |

09.28.23 | Suns got a big body they can throw at Jokic in thr playoffs, at worst.
At best, they got a big man who can play defense, knock down 3s to space the floor for all their scorers, and also wont be a locker room cancer and wont disappear for stretches during games. Plus they got some depth that they were sorely lacking.
Sun-Bucks finals this year, barring injuries and unforeseen chemistry issues. |

They could've gotten so much more for Ayton, but this is a very nice outcome for someone who wants nothing but the worse for that stupid ass team |
Wildcardbitchesss
09.30.23 | alright so Portland seems pretty committed to the rebuild right?
