12.10.21 | killer list whamo, as mentioned i have been slacking on my Dead tunes this last month. i think it has been the change of season and colder weather. today we're up 15 degrees f above yesterday, so it was a great day for some dead!
back in october i almost snagged the new Fox theatre box set. you're probably familiar but it was one of those rare shows/stretches where Keith was on keys and pigpen was still doing main vocals for "his" songs. i know technically Keith and Pig toured later together in 72 but Pig's health by then had begun to deteriorate quite a bit. easy to say that this is one of the best recordings of them together. if you haven't heard it, definitely check it out! with Keith being new to the band and keys sounding very fresh - and with an invigorated Pigpen (just listen to that smoking 22 minute Good lovin) they were quite the combo. also you mentioned the Other One on your list - this set has an epic Other One > Sitting on top > Other one that is definitely worth a play

paging Titan as well!

12.10.21 | Ya Keith brought that jazz piano that just fit with the band, moved them forward I'd say. I have heard a couple of the shows from that 71 period and although I like them, different. hey go from 4-5 country songs then a 30 minute Dark star. lol, almost shocking at the difference between songs |
MotokoKusanagi
12.10.21 | yep lol i need to check out more shows from that stretch tbh but i really enjoyed that one. your description is definitely accurate
also why do Dead boxset packages have to look so damn good? really hard to resist dropping sub $100 on these every other month and it's hard to keep up with all of the pressings too |
MotokoKusanagi
12.10.21 | yo can we get this list featured or what staff
edit: nvm it is featured lol |

12.10.21 | Moto
that has become the issue with GD merchendise, they make them so amazing that they outprice a lot of people. I wanted the 73 boxset but it is so expensive. The best buy right now is the Dave's picks sub. 4 to 5 shows and a bonus disc, if you get it early it is $99. Usually 14 discs of prime soundboard/aud. hybrid matrix. Also has essays and pictures from the show |
MotokoKusanagi
12.10.21 | that does sound like a good deal but i don't have too much interest in CDs really. i already horde FLAC/mp3 versions of all my music, i prefer vinyl for collecting physical copies. better for the album art and ritual of spinning records i think. of course it's a pain in the ass to store it all. plus it's $100 per show! i did really enjoy CDs back before i had bluetooth in my old car though. kept Europe 72 and Workingman's dead in the dash at all times lol |

12.11.21 | Dudes listening to 6/3/76, first show back after the retirement
Set 2 is crazy, a let it grow>drums>let it grow
And a very funky hell>slip>franklin
Must check
Would be awesome to get the June 76 box, all Betty boards but can’t come up with 400 scratch |
wham49
12.11.21 | I think I’m going to start using this thread as a way to spread the great jams I hear from my Dead collection anybody else is free to do the same. I hear so much sometimes I get confused as date and such so a way to remember
Todays installment is disc one of Dicks picks volume 12 or 6/26/74
The opening jam>China>Mid love buddy jam>rider is so extended and chill great way to start a Saturday
And the ending sequence of truckin>other one jam>Spanish jam>wharf rat is so wonderful, the other one jam is almost more of a nobody’s fault jam imo, and Phil goes really deep in the Spanish jam |
MotokoKusanagi
12.11.21 | will check those today brother, try to get back to you soon |
wham49
12.12.21 | the Dark Star>wharf rat from 2/24/74 |
wham49
12.19.21 | I have 2 from over the weekend. First, set 2 and 3 from 8/27/72 really famous show but stands up to it. The playin to start set 2 and the Dark Star to start set 3 are both some of the coolest of their career.
From the very famous to the completely unknown
4/15/83. I knw of this bescause it is the filler on the tape that has set 3 of 8/27/72 on it. HAs a very rare and cool song
so the "jam" is Stranger>He's gone>Bob Star. The first of 3 ever Bob stars. If you like the Bob weir weather report suite or Lost sailor>St of circum. you'll dig this. Not sure why it wasnt play after the 3 week outing, I think it is cool |
wham49
12.30.21 | So I found a tape that had on side A, Ratdog in Fiji, sometime in 05 doing a dark star in the middle of the set but
Side B was unlabeled. So got to get surprise and hear 8/4/74 Weather report suite> space> wharf Rat from a GD hour I recorder 15 years ago. Apparently that was David Gans’, the longtime host of the GD hour, first tape
The transition from WRS> space is deep man, just fantastic
I believe it was on a Dicks Picks, maybe 31 |
robertsona
12.30.21 | Always loved the 1970 Fillmore (west?) concert that opens with dancin in the streets |
robertsona
12.30.21 | East* ugh of course I fumble the 50/50 ball |
wham49
12.31.21 | You may be talking about 2/13/70 Filmore east, dancing was played, yes great show
1970 is top shelf Dead |
robertsona
12.31.21 | Oh wait yeah it opens with Casey Jones doesn’t it |
wham49
12.31.21 | yes, I looked at it |
wham49
01.04.22 | 7/27/74 playin'
very cool mellow jam that builds |
wham49
01.19.22 | 7/19/74 Daves picks 17 disc 3
The jam starts with Weather report suite, the Let It Grow jam is extended and amazing the boys get totally lost in the stratosphere and the jam comes to an almost total stop until they change courses and a primal Spanish jam builds slowly and eventually lands on a highly rated (per Deadbase X) Eyes with that certain 74 something, it all eventually settles down to a great China doll
Made me stop what I was doing to just be in the room and Absorb it |
Sharenge
01.19.22 | why hasn't this band released an album in over three decades? |
Sharenge
01.19.22 | oh... apparently they haven't been active in almost three decades and Jerry Garcia is dead... boy is my face red |
wham49
02.28.22 | 9/6/80 set 2 the whole thing fellas.
Don’t say they were dead by 79, this proves otherwise. A Shakedown starter, followed by one of my fave Weir pieces Sailor>Saint, Althea > Playin sandwich of UJB-drums/space>nfa>wheel>UJB>Playin that is mid 70’s quality
Check it |
wham49
03.01.22 | Greetings and salutations my Head friends
and Merry 3/1 to you all
3/1 of course celebrates the show the GD performed on this day in 1969 a scorcher of a show that happens to be my and many more Heads favorite of all time. Please indulge yourself today and treat yourself to an all-timer. The Dark star is top notch as is the rest of the jamming on this. |
wham49
03.16.22 | 3/7/81 you all
great show |
wham49
04.13.22 | great to see so much discussion on the Best American band. |
wham49
04.16.22 | There is something inherently fun in the seeking out of things, the hunt, finding things that arent easy to find. Maybe thats why I love the Dead, they arent easy to find, they dont want it to be easy to find them. You have to seek them out, you have to be patient and expect that "IT" will happen at unexpected times and completely out of nowhere. There are no telltales signs "IT" just shows up and you have to be willing to wait for it, to let it come to you, becasue you do not want to miss it when it comes, and you dont know when "IT" will come again. SO you listen to countless shows that dont have "IT" becasue you dont know that it didn't, becasue who knew that in 8/19/89 "IT" shows up out of nowhere in the middle of a UJB jam that was sandwiched between 2 playin's. That the jazz jam sparked something that just made the rest of the show take off and totally made my day, one of the trippier Other Ones I've heard in a while that comes out space.
until next time keep trying to find "IT" |
wham49
05.06.22 | set 2 of 10-31-91, is amazing. The Ken Kesey spoken work during space is crazy and moving as it is a memorial to Graham and Kesey's son. Has to be one of the best sets in the last 4 years of the band |
wham49
05.12.22 | 5/1/81
set 1 is nice, set 2 has a great sailor/saint that rocks |
wham49
06.25.22 | Set 2 of 3/30/94 starts with a really great spacey scar/fire> Playin>the final Dark Star, I haven’t gotten through whole thing yet but I think there is a Stella Blue after space
Maybe the last great second set |
wham49
07.05.22 | the dark star on 10-26-89 is just crazy almost think it is from the early 70's for about 10 minutes |
wham49
08.27.22 | It has been a while since a show moved me to comment but set 2 of 6/10/73 is crazy
Starts with an eyes and moved around the board very well, a cool Dark star, oh Stella blue is after Eyes and is very good, interesting reading by Garcia, there is Aldo a Here cones Sunshine, check it dudes. I found IT, now on to the next |
wham49
09.22.22 | Good evening race fans, I know it’s been a long time but something hit me today
It was 11/2/79 set 2
It starts out pretty ordinary, but the lost sailor/saint/jam/drums/space section is phenomenal, the jam section is wonderful as it hits on moods not over done through the years, really cool a more modern take on things imo |
wham49
05.15.23 | anybody check the Barton HAll concert from Dead and Co, was pretty good with a decent amount of jamming, the Cassidy was the best of the night IMO. great set list as well |
ABalefulAura
03.22.24 | whamo where you been? got me jamming GD by myself on sput these days |
