Build-an-Album II, R6 (P2): Y'all Ready For This?

ELIMINATION TIME! Who survived and who was left behind? It's finally time to find out...
1Periphery
Periphery IV: Hail Stan

Previously… on Build-an-Album: the genre was (*sigh*) DJENT, the theme was IN THE GROOVE, and contestants were required to submit EPs rather than a traditional album. This meant that any tracklist worked, but the total duration of the submission had to fall under 25 minutes. Two “dumb rules” stated that competitors couldn’t use Meshuggah works, and it also assigned a ‘rival’ to each entrant. Beating a rival meant double points. How did THAT particular chaos shake out?! I don’t know. Actually, I do, so let’s check it out!
2Plini
Handmade Cities

bg's EP: This was awesome at many portions, but it crossed over the barrier as well. There was a lot more prog metal/jazz fusion shenanigans at play than djent, with any djent influence being pretty meager in comparison. It even lacked in grooves, instead succeeding off of beautiful melodies and soundscapes. Not exactly what was called for, but at least it wasn't massively offensive in flaunting rules. 3.55
3After the Burial
Wolves Within

Sloth's EP: Solid, chonky djent grooves here. It's done well more than others and it just... well, it djents, it djents pretty hard at times. What more can be asked for? A lead bass riff? Track 3 is here, and it has a delicious groove courtesy of the scrumptious low end. Mmmm. Tasty. OK, anyways, this was good, and also great. Dj0nt? 3.85
4Neuma
Neuma

David's EP: David somehow managed to pick a Car Bomb song that didn't make me long for death. The true prize here is track 4, which feels like the prototype to what Meshuggah would eventually become, but from the later 90s. Very ahead of the curve on the djent brigade, and very well composed in its own right. This had plenty of crushing guitars that punctuated the grooves, making it addicting and heavy all at once. Excellent work. (3.95)
5Periphery
Juggernaut: Omega

Shemson's EP: This is... boring... which I guess describes the bottom of the barrel of djent (which is a vast fuckin' barrel). It could be great at time, but it could also have Periphery being Periphery and Spiritbox, which was a puzzling choice all things considered. Could have been worse I suppose, but in its current state, it finds its way to the bottom of the pile. 3.3
6Corelia
Nostalgia

Sint's EP: Some decent grooves here, some standard djent here. Overall not bad! Hard to describe it in any other terms, it's just kinda solid. Not noteworthy, not bad... it's great and does its job well enough. Stuff like Track 4 banged hard as hell while also having a bit more atmosphere to it, which was appreciated, and I wish more songs here stood out like that. 3.7
7TesseracT
One

Uzu's EP: Some more solid, mostly unimpressive djent. I can't complain too too much, but there just wasn't much here to help it stand out as opposed to fellow EPs. When it DID stand out, like the strained vocals of track 4, it was to its detriment. Serviceable grooves, but none that truly made me feel like gettin' down and shaking my booty. 3.6
8Vildhjarta
Måsstaden

Steak's EP: The djent daddy came and the djent daddy djented. The grooves here were potent, and my ass began to move completely on its own. Literally, entirely on its own. This is probably something to see a doctor for, but with VOLA vibes and some strong thall pandemonium, it's hard to avoid the boogie. Definitely a good time. 4.1
9TesseracT
One

Tyman's EP: A rather atmospheric, textured affair while also sporting plenty of powerful grooves worth paying attention to. Even Monuments, who sorta fell out of my esteem after removing my rose colored glasses, put forth a good showing here. The approach of track 1 in particular was a nice change of pace and established a robust flow that would endure throughout the EP. Nice djj0nt good djpegrfb good job. 4.05
10Chimp Spanner
At the Dream's Edge

Pangea's EP: This was djent. Pretty unexciting compared to fellow EPs, and it didn't stand out in any regard, even in a negative manner. It was perfectly average at being great. It could get repetitive at times, which I suppose is expected, but with elimination on the line, I reckon more spice is required to boost proceedings. This was deficient in that regard. 3.5
11David Maxim Micic
Bilo 2.0

Johnny's EP: This EP gets a bit of credit for trying to push things a bit. The cheesy bombast of track 1 was a nice little treat, and the inherent wackiness of SikTh was also fun. The second half is where this sort of hit a wall; it got a bit repetitive and a bit dull in comparison to the preceding tunes, and while not totally bad, it did sorta tarnish the entire experience. If this got out of its comfort zone a bit more, it might have achieved greater heights, but it got stuck at a certain point. 3.8
12Andromida
The Void

Rock's EP: Eh... no thanks. I was already concerned with the inclusion of BABYMETAL, but everything else here ended up following the same pattern of average, unshakable djent. The electronic elements of track 1 gave it a bit more intrigue, but not nearly enough to elevate it. Not sure I could recall track 2 ever again in my life, but I'm also numb to the Dali Dundering Concept. Swing and a miss. 3.0
13Frontierer
Unloved

Mort's EP: What a dje0ntergoo this was. It started off strong and ended strong, supplying a ton of crushing grooves that imposed their will liberally throughout the EP. It was a perfect effort... if not for the aimless nature of track 2, which really felt like it had no purpose on this work. But it succeeded otherwise, either due to how mean its grooves could be (track 1) or how bubbly and upbeat they could be (track 4). 3.9
14Animals As Leaders
The Joy of Motion

Storm's EP: This EP started off as decent enough djent, but suddenly took a turn for the worse by running headfirst into the vapid pit of nu metal. Track 4 struck a fatal blow that track 5 stuck a dagger in. Two lame songs in a row that just didn't feel worth the time, unfortunately. There wasn't enough before that steep decline that could salvage the ending half. 3.1
15Cloudkicker
Beacons

Phero's album: What the fuck? Where was THIS the past few rounds?! Whether it was the pressure or not, this is the best effort Phero has put forth. From the powerful introduction of track 1, the energy of track 2, all the way to the ingenious work on track 5, this was an incredible experience relative to the crowd. It could supply jazz while still maintaining djent roots, and could even have a punishing, heavy side to it. A completely surprise, and a big success when it was needed the most. 4.0

Periphery IV: Hail Stan

OK, good riddance to djent. I’m not sure I even enjoy metal music anymore. Or music in general. What even *is* music? Whatever, this was a hectic round in many ways, and the scores got funky! Time to see placements!
FIRST PLACE: Steak (4.1)
SECOND PLACE: Tyman (4.05)
THIRD PLACE: Phero (4.0)
And that’s how it went down. Now it’s the big moment… ELIMINATION TIME. Check the scores below! The last four will be escorted off the premises, by force (read: making fun of their 5s) if necessary.

Not only does this mean the big elimination has come, but it also means that it’s time to say goodbye to Phase I. For the next five rounds, we will be entering PHASE II. Nice job making it this far! Now, however, things are changing up. Scoring will scale the same way was before, but with adjustments: first place now gets 14, second 12, and so on until 4 points at sixth place, after which scores decrease until 0. Point allocations will change in a similar manner with each elimination. Everyone resets back to nothing to start.

“Each elimination,” you say? That’s right, it’s time for a crossover episode… welcome to BUILD-AN-ALBUM: SURVIVOR EDITION. Points are going to be functioning quite differently; instead of being just for yourself, you need to keep a team in mind. WE’RE SPLITTING UP INTO 2 TEAMS OF 5 PLAYERS EACH. These will be determined by team captains, who are the two players that placed first and second in Phase I: Steak and Johnny.
21Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

First place picks first, second place picks next, and so on until we have our two teams. For each round, players compete individually as per usual, but which team wins is determined by cumulative scores; if Team A earns more than Team B in placements, than Team A wins. Whichever team is on the losing side will have to put up a player on their team for elimination. Whoever is chosen is then shipped off the metaphorical island, never to be seen again.

However, there’s a bit more going on under the surface. Hidden inside each round will be some special goodies: one immunity idol, one case of 10 points, and one case pf 20 points. Each can only be discovered if a user picks the track that they are ‘hidden’ inside. Clues will be given each round for where prizes may lie, and once the correct track is claimed, it is off the table. If a player put up for elimination happens to have an immunity idol, they survive, and THEY choose who to eliminate.
22Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

So, PHASE II:
The Game = Survivor-lite
The Gimmick = Players are divided into 2 teams of 5
The Catch = Team that scores highest wins; losing team puts a player up for elim.
The Bonus = Hidden goodies in each round

To make this easier, I will only be using songs from albums that I have rated. That will narrow the pool down, but you’ll still have a lot of searching to do. It can never be *that* easy, y’know?

Still with me? Good! Then let’s dive into our next genre!
23Lupe Fiasco
Tetsuo and Youth

The wheel has been spun, and it has granted us HIP-HOP. Another pretty vast genre tag here. Anything you submit will have to be reasonably under that banner. Bring your favorite emcees and let’s have ourselves a party!
24Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

Your theme to consider this round will be, as might be expected, will be WORDSMITHING. Hip-hop has a storied history of artists that knew how to write compelling verses on varying topics, weaving elaborate tales or providing biting social commentary. Success in this round will depend a fair bit on the skills of the artists/groups you use in the lyrical department! To the metal fans with us, lyrics are those things the vocalist says when they do the grr grr thing. Very cool!

For this round, your album will need to contain thirteen tracks and clock in past the 50-minute mark. The number thirteen was chosen because it was chosen. That should be pretty easy to accomplish and it offers a little bit of freedom.
25Macho Man Randy Savage
Be A Man

And then, of course, there is a “dumb rule” that is here to interfere with your efforts. Hip-Hop often gathers together different artists for features to give some extra ‘oomph’ to a track and add an exclamation point to it. That’s going to be a no-no here. Y’see, we’re looking to highlight the collectives or individuals in question, not someone else! Get that crap out of here. No features are allowed this round, be it for a verse or for a chorus. This does NOT, however, include featured producer credits, as that would be far too much of a hindrance.

In addition to this, Phase II brings back to the fold the second “point of no return” rule: no repeat artists in your album. If you use one Eminem song for your record, then you can’t use him again in your record. Keep that in mind going forward!

Be A Man
