My favorite songs of 2017
And why |
1 | Brockhampton SISTER/NATION
I've never heard a hip hop song that took me on so many twists and turns. Reminds me of a progressive song or some shit. |
2 | Queens of the Stone Age The Evil Has Landed
Has that old school Zeppelin feel but it's not just derivative. The verse riff is infectious, the chorus is rockin, and the outro reminds me of early Queens of the Stone Age. And there's so many great guitar solos here. |
3 | Joey Badass Ring the Alarm (ft. Nyck Cautious, Kirk Knight, and Meechy Darko)
I commented on this album's page that this song was an underrated banger. It features some of the most incredible rhyme schemes I've heard all this year (rhyming cautious with conscious with corpses, etc.). The creepy beat in the beginning is so unique and there are some awesome change ups as well. There's one part where the instrumental is just like WAH WAH WAH WAH. Just listen to it. |
4 | Lorde Homemade Dynamite
It was a toss up between this and the title track but catchiness prevailed. The chorus speaks for itself and it just never gets old. |
5 | Tame Impala List of People (To Try and Forget About)
Yes I know this is a Currents B-side, but it still is an amazing song even by Tame Impala standards. Kevin Parker has his formula down and I can't wait to hear the next record (although I hope he continues to change and evolve) |
6 | Brand New Can't Get it Out
Yeah Jesse Lacey did some fucked up shit back in the day, but this song is one of the best alt rock anthems of 2017... The chorus is so raw and uplifting. |
7 | MGMT Little Dark Age
Very 80s inspired and it sounds like the Cure, but I can't get the chorus out of my head. I would LOVE to see them really go in this dark, creepy synth-laden direction. |
8 | Big K.R.I.T. Get Away
The "Sleepy People" sample contrasts with Big K.R.I.T.'s rapping so well. And I love the message within the song. Everybody can relate to having to get away from the day to day bullshit of life. |
9 | Run the Jewels Don't Get Captured
This song has a strong political message and features some killer verses from Killer Mike and El-P. It also has some sick old school turntables. |
10 | Mastodon Roots Remain
It was tough to pick a favorite from this album, but this one takes the cake for me. Brann's vocal melody in the chorus is beautiful, and I can't help but shed a tear when he sings about death and how it has impacted him losing so many loved ones. |
