| Ranking Haken correctly
In anticipation of their sixth album "Virus" that's gonna be released this week, I'll do a ranking of Haken's albums. As always this is an ojective ranking. People may have different opinions and they're entitled to their opinion, but they're still wrong. | | 6 |  | Haken
Aquarius
A charming debut, but overall just alright. I like to listen to it from time to time. More than The Mountain actually. But it's really a "it's alright while it's spinning" kind of record that doesn't do much more for me. | | 5 |  | Haken
The Mountain
A good album. Like really good. It's still rooted in the symphonic sound of Visions, but it's more concise, the crunchy riffs are crunchier, the whole thing is more dynamic. Because It's There is also the first time they used pitch correction heavily on Ross' vocals. But overall it's a bit boring. Cockroach King is awesome, but the album never reaches these heights again. Everything after that is good, but not as fun or engaging. | | 4 |  | Haken
Virus
Some good stuff on here. Not digging everything, but Invasion and Carousel are definetly great songs. Messiah Complex is a nice prog suite with lots of fun call backs to Vector and Cockroach King. Overall the album doesn't really convince me though. | | 3 |  | Haken
Affinity
Such a diverse album! It may have a 80s aesthetic, but it's very much modern prog metal. Haken like to use recurring themes and riffs on their albums that make it a very cohesive experience. In this sense this is a typical Haken record that differs from their precursors through it's very different aesthetic. The amount of electronics increased a fair bit and I really enjoy it. | | 2 |  | Haken
Vector
It's so damn close to Visions, even though it's very much the opposite in terms of their musical approach. Vector is riff based, not as symphonic, their heaviest album to date, it's short, the songs concise and straight to the point. Probably the most enjoyable Haken album for first time listeners. The increasing amount of pitch correction starts to grate me though. They use it as a stylistic means, that's quite clear imo, but I don't like the sound of it. Visions
The peak of their early more symphonic style. It's meandering like Aquarius was, but with crunchier guitars and more thoughtful songwriting. There is very nice synth work and a great flow. Haken couldn't take this approach any further so they got more concise on future albums, but they crafted something special here.
It often has a Dream Theater (Scenes From A Memory, Images And Words) feel to it, but more like their lighter songs. Sounding like other artists is a common theme with Haken and it doesn't take away from the big achievement this album is. | |
